Thanks to all that viewed the film and for all the unique perspectives. It's always interesting as a filmmaker to hear everybody's individual interpretations and likes and dislikes about a particular project.

Thanks!

I'm not sure if you'll be able to get up there but that's on top of a 33 story condo my friend lives in.

It's off of Rama 3 near the Rama 9 Bridge (I believe).

Right next door to the Montien Riverside Hotel.

Re: Ask us about Thailand!

It really depends what you are doing, but if you eat out a lot and stay somewhere nice it you can easily spend $5k-10k a month USD.

Really depends what your lifestyle is like. If you are eating at restaurants once or twice a day / ordering room service every day then its going to be a lot, plus going out drinking/partying.

I mean if you spend $100 usd a night on accomodation for say $2k a month on an apartment, then $100 per day, thats easily $7k a month.

Plus $100/day on expenses/entertainment, 3.5k baht a day is probably not far off if you are going out drinking, eating out, seeing girls, doing activities the whole time you are here, when you factor in you are probably not just paying for yourself, sometimes you will have company.

If you stay somewhere cheaper, and eat cheaper, and go out less, then obviously it will be much less expensive.

Re: Ask us about Thailand!

yea i guess so. especially if it is his first trip it can be costly

for some reason i thought or euros when he first wrote 5-10k

i spend around $2-2.5k a month after living a year here and i am probably in the low end in this thread so i guess i can easily see spending 2.5-5k a month even without rent for a 2 month holiday

Re: Ask us about Thailand!

Regarding how much you spend over a 2 month stay, it depends on what you want to do and the kind of accommodation you want to stay in.

10k USD would be on the high end imo, but this is easily doable if you are partying everynight and eating out at quality restaurants every night. You could also easily stay here for 2 months for under 4k USD and do lots of activites and go out if you stay in hotels with no internet and eat in food courts. Thailand is accessible with both a high budget and a low budget.

Re: Ask us about Thailand!

Yeah thanks for the answers. Im not a highroller by any means and were just wondering what the costs would be in general. I wouldnt eat at high end restaurants at all or live in expensive hotels or apartments. I was thinking of coming there next summer so it isnt actual? yet..

I just wanted to share a short film that I created on a recent trip to Thailand to other future travelers.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Us-sLMAhNg

It will hopefully help show what all the hype is about.
---

Truly a fine movie. I've put one together (based on chapter one of my unpublished novel) and I know how much work is involved. Mine didn't make the cut at the film festivals.

A suggestion though - for part 2 why not go from an arm's length panoramic movie to one where the nitty-gritty life in Thailand is shown? The good, bad, ugly, and beautiful.

When I was there recently I saw hill people dancing at the night market and playing an unknown instrument for a few baht, 7 or 8 year old girls selling flowers at the adult bars for 10 baht each, kids playing checkers on the sidewalk with bottle caps, incredibly beautiful women, desparate old women sitting on the sidewalk begging for money, people in wheelchairs selling lottery tickets, tourists oblivious to most of the above, very irritating touts harassing every tourist who walked by (especially at Patong), delicious food, kind people, those who clearly dislike farangs, a police officer writing up a ticket for a farang (the only ticket I saw being written there), the crazy traffic, temple ceremonies, and the list could go on for pages.

A movie showing those things and more could make it to Sundance or NatGeo.

I might take it on as a project but now I'm back in the states, trying to improve my poker game and figure out how to live in Thailand or somewhere else outside of the states. So, the project is yours.

Good movie and good luck.

Re: Ask us about Thailand!

After staying in Phuket(Kata) 3 weeks my opinion is that it is impossible to play from here. Internet stability is so bad. I'm using TTT, which i read where good in this thread, but when I look at Network Status at Pokerstars it says "connection bad (0%). I'm tilting so bad because of this awful connection. Me and the neighbor is sharing a modem and we are using wires and we are having the same problem, We have even changed modem, but same shi t anyway.. Internet surfing on the other hand is okay, but no money earn on that.. Every poker site I have tried is the same(disconnection and awful lag every minute). Grrrr.

Anyone with the same problem in Phuket, which ISP doesn't have this problem, if any?

Thanks for your kind feedback and excellent suggestions!!!

I actually hope to shoot a feature film that is more in the line with what you're mentioning in the future. I would like to show a bit more of the human condition not only in Thailand but all over the world.

The main reason I didn't film people as much in this particular project is from a legal standpoint I would have to get releases signed. Also, a lot of the time my friend was at work so I didn't have a guide or translator while I explored the city.

If your film is online I would love to see it. You can never go wrong with networking with people with similar interests.

0% 24/7?

just to confirm that you are not on TOT but TT&T? also TT&T has couple of options. the indy package sucks, if you have that then go to their office and upgrade to premier. 2/1M connection should cost 1090B/month

that might be your biggest problem

also there is a TT&T thread on thaivisa saying they have some routing problems that affect foreign sites. that started about one month ago also. not sure if it has been fixed yet

the last month has not been perfect for tt&t adsl. before that (when i wrote about it in here) it had worked for almost a year with no problems for me/us

in the last month i have had to use my backup connection (CDMA) on 2-3 nights on party when i got too much packet loss with tt&t. the last couple of weeks have been fine though so if your problem is happening now i dont know what to say

i just pinged stars and party for 15 minutes and did not get any packet loss. also stars network status is 100% to each location.

i would check that tt&t package type first. if you have premier and it shows 0% 24/7(hard to believe) then it is a problem.

if you are staying here longer get CDMA as backup

Re: Ask us about Thailand!

I played in Samui for 4 months using both TOT and TT&T. I never had any problems with either (except blackouts but that's not really the ISP's fault).

There are different packages you can get, and the difference between the 256k package and the 4mbit package is pretty significant, when it only costs about 400 baht a month more.

Are you using wireless or a cable? In my experience wireless was awful, couldn't even web browse with it. But that's because not many of the people offering it use proper amplifiers.

Re: Ask us about Thailand!

i am using a 3mb connection now, adsl from TOT. its ok, but sometimes it disconnects. THerefore i just got a backup conn on my mobile. Now, i use this when TOT has trouble. I have tried the 2mb from TOT and had the same problems there. My friend says the 3 and 4 mb packages from TOT use the same line, so You will not get a different connection. Would be nice if someone could confirm/reject this.

I'm on maxnet/TTT and get 0% or medium to very large packetloss to pokerstars.com and some of the other ip's in the network status tool. As soon as I turn on my vpn or proxy everything is perfect, just a tad higher latency but no packet loss. With a VPN/proxy you should have a solid connection to pokerstars. I haven't tried the other networks but I would assume the same if it's routing problems.

Yes, it's not for most young poker players. I just recall him saying he doesn't party all that much in some post recently, so thought there's a chance he might enjoy some of the north provinces.

The weather is pretty cool though, and mountain views are a nice change imo.
