hmm i have never seen anyone talk about rock climbing or cave tours(in phuket). maybe i just dont pay attention...

but whenever someone goes to chiang mai they mention these (well huge sample size of 2)

i guess you have to try one of the travel agents in phuket to try to organize this for you. i wouldn't know where else to go

if you want to get some pictures dont leave before you visit atleast some of the many view points in phuket

if you dont like tourists then christmas and new year will be a hell for you as it is thailand's peak season in tourism and all the tourist spots should be packed

hotels and flights are multiple times more expensive than for example now. it is much nicer though everywhere as it is not too hot and there is no rain.

it depends on what you want to do. otherwise it is pretty difficult to recommend any places

Is it worth going to Singapore for electronics shopping rather than buy my stuff in Bangkok (where I'm eventually going to stay) or Kuala Lumpur.

I need to buy a decent laptop, a 24"/30" monitor, a video camera and probably a cell phone as well so it's going to be quite a few thousand USD.

I need to decide ASAP whether I'm going to fly Perth - Kuala Lumpur - Bangkok or Perth - Kuala Lumpur - Singapore - Bangkok.
As for the costs of the flights, it'll be <100 USD difference so that doesn't really matter.

Any advice? How big will the price difference be? Should I be worried about getting hit by tax at any of the airports (will obviously throw away all the packages etc except for the monitor)? Basically - has anyone done it and found it a good idea?

I'm flying out in three days. Thanks for your advice.

I don't know about the prices and stuff but you should factor in the hassle of flying with all this equipment from Singapore to Thailand, and also the potential extra luggage cost.

how much do they cost? for one that's 1900x1200. It seems it would be a PIA to put it in a suitcase, but doable. I'd imagine it would be a problem not being able to fit essentials, i.e, jeans, shirts, underwear, etc

I just opened a bank account at Kasikorn(Phuket mall) a couple of days ago, the assistant there insisted that I needed a work permit, but after I told her I didnt need that, she talked to her supervisor and I got the account. I needed passport, address and thai telephone number. It cost 500 baht.

Anyway, how many % is going away in fees if you transfer money from moneybookers, full tilt or pokerstars to your Kasikorn account? f. ex. 1K USD.

It won't be anything like srs rock climbing, but you can get a little fix by visiting Ban Pae waterfall(includes the gibbon project) and to a lesser extent khatu waterfall. Each of these waterfalls has some minor rockage in the cascades with some climbing possiblities.

Highly reccomend Ban Pae as the waterfall swim experience is pretty wicked.

i think they might be some law that you should have work permit in order a new bank account. i dont think you can open an account anywhere else than kasikorn with tourist visa. but well done teaching the assistant a lesson

regarding fees they at kasikorn end they take 0.25% + a flat fee from 200-500 baht depending how big transaction it is. i dont remember the limits for the fees. if you ship over 1k you should get under 1% in total fees

Yeah, I was actually looking at the new MacBook Pro. I've got a few other options as well though. So is that in Bangkok you're talking about?

Wow, I'd always been under the impression that electronics are priced ~1.5x in Thailand, whereas Singapore and Hong Kong would be the cheapest places in the world to buy stuff.

13-14k for a 1920x1200 24" isn't bad at all either. So you all reckon it wouldn't be that much of a difference whether I buy my load of electronics in Singapore or Thailand?

hope you know what can/will happen when you get 15 unknowns under the same roof?

the ssnl got a house with ~same idea with only 4-5 ppl. i only have some 2nd/3rd hand info + what they wrote in the threads. lets just say there were some problems you might not know that can happen if you havent been here yet.

that url shows a bit different sort of plan though. i guess it can work if you handle it well.
