It used to be the 60 day tourist visa you could extend another 30 days while in country for like $60. So total would be 90 days before needing to leave. I'd be surprised if this wasn't still the case.

As far as I know you can extend any visa or "visa on arrival" within Thailand for additional 30 days once so a tourist visa should give you 60 + 30 days (like 5 south mentioned). After that you will still have the option to make a border run if you choose to stay longer.

WRT visas, best option is to get a multiple entry tourist visa for 200 USD. This is possible ONLY in your home country (or maybe surrounding countries but not in embassies in Asia for example). With this one you can enter as many times as you wish during the 6 months the visa is good for. If you do it right you get total 9∼ months (each time you enter they give you 2 monhts + extend 1 month at immigration for 2k THB).

For that visa you'll have to show plane tickets going in and out of the country for each entry + hotel bookings for the whole stay + bank statement or credit card statement showing you have X amount of money to stay in the country (you should be able to get cheap tickets in and out to Cambodia from BKK that you end up not using and you can book hotels in booking or agoda choosing to pay when you check in that you can cancel when they give you the visa).
