"Dr Somsak Akksilp said that not only was Thailand well prepared for a second wave of Covid-19 but that maintaining zero local infections was an unrealistic target since it was still not known when a vaccine would become available.

"We cannot afford to maintain zero cases forever," Dr Somsak said. "We need to reopen the country. The country must move forward and people have jobs to do."

This guy seems to be thinking in the right direction, hope that those calling the shots listen to him.

Even with a vaccine maintaining zero cases will be completely unrealistic

God this gona go down hard to most of Phuket, probs 5% of places are still open and most of those that are have been hoping this would be some relief. You would think the hotels involved would have been more than ready, or winged it for the first lot.

On a side note we got a new police chief from Bangkok in, currently 9 of 100(ish) bars on Bangla open, all of which on the brink ldo, in order to stamp his authority the new chief decided to closed the bars on a Saturday at 12, which, according to the owners I talked to is their only decent day as gets some crowds from Phuket Town, Rawai, etc, which dont come mid week. Seems like a nice guy.

the thai authorities really are scum to not only inconvenience all those people that signed up for the 270 day visa but scam them out of their money too. would have cost all those people $5k minimum for flights, insurance, quarantine hotels.

imagine all that planning to put your life at home on hold for 9 months while you go to thailand. people taken leave from work or quit jobs, maybe rent out their homes.

i think they'll eventually give the money back because this will be all over social media and will discourage anyone from ever signing up for one of these special visas ever again.

A German company that built the DMK tollway got scammed by the gov out of 20 million and went bankrupt. 200 people lost their jobs.

Even impounding the thai price airplane only got them a partial settlement:

Just presume higher up thais to be scumbags and criminals unless proven otherwise over a lengthy period of time and just because someone might have a good rep doesn't mean he didn't silence dozens of people he / she scammed through blackmail (it's pretty easy to find non compliance with the law / tax code in thailand on almost anyone that does business) and intimidation.

Only Pattaya grandpa projects western level law and order on Thailand.

I think its time for the cult of Thailand to stop policing themselves and realize the problem isn't the dirty falang, sexpat and hippies. The problem is Thailand itself. Cultist should all be getting together once and for all and say GOODBYE THAILAND. Its not like there isn't other option in the region.

If the communitie would get together and stop worshipping Thailand, locals and government officials wouldn't be able to get away with this level of bullshit because there would simply be no expat and tourist. But seems like the communities its just to busy policing other people. Too busy saying things like if you got any problem with being scammed all the time and paying bribe its your problem, its your fault. Im rich they are poor, its only normal for me to give them money all the time and be victim to their scheme.

Until Thailand fanboy see reality, Thailand will keep pulling things like that and getting away with it.

Even pre COVID Chiang Mai was a ghost town when people figured out it's an overpriced sh*thole where locals are all up in your business, spread gutter gossip 24/7 and show open hatred, disdain and ridicule towards westerns and cops racially profile you for shakedowns.

Add in a couple mystery deaths due to pesticide spray on linen and you have a touristic collapse.

The shift towards open hatred, ridicule and disdain of westerners in Bangkok happened quite quickly after smartphones got widespread adoption in Thailand and 5 years wasn't quite long enough for westerners to adjust - especially older ones.

If the world ever goes back to normal I doubt Thailand will be much on the radar again as people's budgets are tighter, travel costs higher due to increased taxes, thai hotels generally overpriced for a 3rd world country and anyone who has experienced the generally nasty and hostile attitudes of thais towards westerners sure as hell won't come back.

Pattaya grandpa is dying / getting forced out with ever higher income requirements as well if he isn't murdered by somchai and his buddies.

Europeans will stay in Europe or travel to first world countries if they have money, Chinese people will remember bad attitudes towards them + deadly accidents and never come back to Thailand + their money never made it to non elite locals anyway.

I'd say Thailand is pretty much finished - but let's see...

Yeah they shut down Pattaya early unless you paid 500,000 baht bribe to keep disco or gogo open as well. Gotta make some cash.

He once infiltrated into the depths of the Chiang Mai mafia, he Located their headquarters to an amazon cafe, after some questioning he found the king pin, who luckily enough was mid way through his 9-5 as a barista, dirty looks where had, it was tense. He knew he wasn’t welcome, he knows too much. But he got served his cappuccino and lived to fight another day.

I will be flying in October 19 and doing the mandatory state quarantine, will let everyone here know how it goes (I'm a thai national)

I think long term tourist visa was a step in the right direction, but they could have done a lot better. You should just pay $1000 for 1 year visa, no reentry required, no questions asked imo, apply online with instant approval. You will attract plenty of wealthier people, digital nomads and in general "higher quality" tourists that spend lots of money and don't want the hassle of visa run nonsense but may not necessarily sign up for fake student visas etc.

What you are suggesting is too simple and makes way too much sense, so it will never happen in Thailand. The special tourist visa is going to be a huge flop, people with money just want to pack and go, nobody wants to jump through hoops if they can just go somewhere else.

The elites don't want westerners anymore. It interferes with keeping their class culture in tact + they don't want the SJW craziness from the US.

In order to avoid political negotiations and to save face they simply raise requirements on retirees until almost nobody can meet them anymore, they aggressively go against frequent visitors and visa runners via immigration staff and now they keep the country indefinitely closed to tourists.

It will be interesting to see how this will all pan out.

GL to you, I'm just the second day out of the same here in HK. 2/10, do not recommend. And I was doing it in my luxury 1300 sqft home (only reason for 2 instead of 1). First week is not that bad but the second week I really went crazy. One week more and I would have become a people hater and whatnot like certain peeps in here for sure. Lasting damage not necessarily avoided. I still have some problem with my legs when moving up or downstairs apparently because these muscles completely deteriorated within this short time. Just keep your brains busy, stocking up enough alc recommended

They also promoted it in HK, nobody that I know of willing to go under these terms obv. After the initial phase I doubt they will even get their target 300/week. Peeps are desperate in these times but probably not that desperate. Surely, a completely out of touch govt, but that's not exactly new or exclusive
