They might ask, they might not, it's rare but people are just taking the extra precaution in case. Depends how long you've already stayed, but there's no known amount for that either.
But if you are pulled aside and questioned, the criteria for being denied entry that they use are either a) suspicion of working here, or b) lack of funds, so both the ticket out and 20k can help you get in. Or they still won't care.
No way of ever knowing. The 20k is much more important than the ticket though. If they want to deny you and you don't have it, that's the reason they'll give. I'd rather have that and not the onward ticket, but ideally just get a $10 flyonward ticket too so you have both. Having a Thai girlfriend / landlord you can call also helps, often they want to call someone to ask if you work here or not.
I'd Google bangkok airport vip fast track and just pay $30 for the fast lane, that also makes you look baller. One of the three 2+2ers that got denied entry in the last few months (all didn't have the 20k and that was the reason given, not the lack of an onward ticket) just got back in via fast lane.
There were also a couple others who got hour long interrogations (with phone calls to GF / landlord) but then got let in.
