I would go to phuket if its your first time in thailand and your alone, bangkok is just huge.

Think its like a city if you know it its awsome, but if your alone and a noob its just overwhelming, so i whent to pattaya cuz it was the closest tourist place, hated it becouse no young ppl there, and ppl where starring at me like crazy so i took a flight to hong kong and whent to macau, whitch is awsome.
Then took a direct flight to phuket where i am right now.
I dont know how long i am staying i have 30 days visa on arrivle and gonna change country after that maybe come back again, i can allways go to macau i get 3 months there at visa on arrivle becouse im norwegian.

Any of you guys still around in Phuket?

Was here with non-poker friends and they have now gone home.

Keen to catchup and go do some stuff.

Im going to stay in Thailand for 1 month soon, see how I like it. Most of you recommended Phuket, so I guess thats the place to be.

How much money would it cost to rent a 1 bedroom apartment in Phuket for 1month thats; safe, within walking distance of a nice beach, somewhere with young people and night life, and it has to be furnished, baller/ but not to baller(I play NL50/100 :P)

I'd appreciate any help!^^

Me and my wife are planning on doing a trip to Thailand for 6-8 weeks. I have a few questions.

  1. What would be the best destianation(s)? The trip would be somewhere between May and November. There ought to be beaches, nature, not too many tourists and enough infrastructure for daily needs of a western man (such as internet for poker). I've been to Koh Tao and loved the place but I'm not sure if the internet works there now-a-days.
  2. Should we rent a house or a hotel? If house, where should I look for it? I wouldnt mind spending 80% of the time in the same location. Internet connection and it's availability is very important. I'd also like to cook my own food from time to time.
  3. How much money does one need / day for food, decent housing and some activities (non-alcoholic)? Activities are such as occasional scuba diving, board rentals, scooter rentals etc. Nothing too balla.
  4. Can you log into iPoker from Thailand? If not, is there any way around it (ie. I log in via my computer in Europe)? Which sites allow Thai access?
  5. Can you surf in Thailand? We're beginners and don't need the waves to be too big FWIW

1. I would rent a house from Phuket for the duration of your trip and then take smaller trips to for example phi phi islands and maybe spend a few days to a week in bangkok too on either end of your trip. May to november is the low/rain season in thailand so rain might ruin your trip. i spent last may here and it rained every day but only like an hour a day. when i came back in july it didnt rain for a month and then it rained like all september-november but it could be rainy all the time during may-november or it could be sunny. lets just sum it up that it will have a lot of variance

While it is low season in may-nov there will be some/lot tourists in phuket. not sure how many is too many for you. now there are wayyyy too many here but it is high season so it is expected.

2. like I said I would get a house. the problem is that i assume you want everything to be hassle free and when you arrive you would have the house ready. but i wouldnt rent any house just because you saw some nice pictures on the web, especially if you dont know phuket. you can get internet to most houses and if your budget is above average then it wont be a problem with the house you are getting. if you would like me or someone here to help you more with houses/locations and stuff you can pm me your msn if you have one so i can ask more specific questions about location etc.

3. if you are fine with cheap thai food and dont need to be sitting at nicer restaurant all the time then you wont have big restaurant bills. you also mentioned cooking yourself which saves you some too. if you need pizzas or steaks then it is going to be a big part of your budget. you can rent scooters for 2.5-4k baht per month (roughly 70-110 usd or 50-80 euros a month)

4. atleast chili and propagandapoker work. havent heard of any skins that dont. afaik betfair and some(all) ongame skins are blocked but all other work. you can use vpn to get around it too

5. people are surfing, yes but i have no idea if phuket is decent for that overall

hope it helps. like i said pm me for msn if you want something more specific

"We've secretly switched an entire region's ethnic identity. Let's see if they notice." :
Quote:
The native people of Northeastern Thailand are ethnic Laotians and the language they speak is Lao, officially called "Isan" or "Thai-Isan". The name change from "Lao" to "Isan" came in the 70's when the Lao PDR was becoming Communist. A war raged along the Mekong River border in the 70's with some villagers on the Thai side fighting with the Communists, and the Thai army fighting battles to keep the area part of Thailand. Not wanting Northeasterners to identify with or become sympathetic to Communist Laos because of their shared ethnicity, the Thai government began a campaign to change the self-identity of Northeastern people from "Lao" to "Isan". The campaign worked so well that at the present time some Northeasterners don't know their language is the same as that spoken in the Lao PDR (although some Isan people still call themselves and their language "Lao").
This is like Hispanics in the US not knowing they speak the same language as Mexico.

I can second Park Plaza although I prefer Dream. The Citadines serviced apartments look really nice and are only like $45 USD a night and brand new. There is one on Suk 16 and one on Suk 11. Haven't tried them but prob will on my next stay in BKK.

thai food is around 100 baht per meal, western food 250-350 (or up to whatever if you are ballin, obv). which is still kinda cheap by western standards, but not like super cheap. cooking yourself is not that much cheaper since western ingredients are all imported and fairly expensive because of it.

ongame (at least tower) works. depositing is a hassle, but manageable.

I like their style too, but does anyone have any idea how to get the price down from 45k/month, or is that acceptable for a nice studio in this area?

Hi guys. I'm wondering about coming to Phuket at some point this year for a few months. How good is the internet there these days? Good enough to play SnGs?

Are there any permanent 2+2er houses which people come and go from? If not, has the idea ever been discussed? It would be a good idea right? Saves people the pain of finding a place, setting up internet etc.

So after a month at a nice serviced apartment except for the fact it is on Sukhumvit Soi 33 (jesus how did no one warn me of this), looks like we are ready to move into a new one or a condo/house for a longer period. Looking to get a 6-12 month lease.

Thoughts on Thong Lo/Ekamai? Seems to be where a lot of our friends live and it'd be nice to be close to them. Any downsides to that area? What about Silom/Sathorn or right around the area we are in? Thong Lo/Ekamai is the front runner but I'm open to area suggestions since we've only been here for 2.5 weeks so far.

Further, we have Thai friends willing to pull the switch on these people for us. What's the best way to do this? Just never say that farang are moving in and have the Thai people get the keys and give them to us the next day? Or have them ask the price and then have us go down to look at it and by now it is too late to jack the price back up?

And finally, if anyone is looking to get a house (most likely a house if there are more than 2 of us) for the next 6-12 months in BKK with a couple of 22-24 year old poker players, shoot me a PM. Looking to move in at the end of Jan, but could be sooner.

Thanks for help in advance.

eakkamei/ thong lor is cool. Lots of hiso cool clubs around there. Silom is also ok but id prefer eakkamei/thonglor over it. Its pretty expensive there though.

Just let you thai friends ask for the price, after the price is stated they cant raise it anymore

So it seems like the dream hotel is getting abit more recommandations here, even though people seem happy about park plaza. Is the location of dream better? Any other recommandations at about $100 and below for a 10 day stay?

Everybody in this thread should watch this 2-episode documentary called "My Boyfriend The Sex Tourist".

The second episode is about Bangkok, and follows a girl from Issan, who goes to work in a bar in NaNa Plaza in Bangkok.

Very very interesting. Should definitely be required reading for anyone in Thailand or coming to Thailand IMO. All I'll say is that its a very interesting insight, and I'll leave the rest up to you.

Episode 1 was also v interesting, following similar stuff in Venezuela, http://www.mininova.org/tor/1052920
