What about accomodation? Best bet is to get a short-term rental or hotel for a bit while trying to find a place there I take it? Any hotel recommendations with very solid internet and a good work area (for a 17" laptop + 30" monitor)? Is a hotel or short-term rental better for the first month? Any good places to find rentals (short and longer term)?

Yeah I know these are very basic questions, but after reading 80-million pages I still don't have good answers.

If anyone has any interest in splitting baller-style accomodations, let me know. I'd be willing to pay almost anything if the place is right.
hey try cheapticketscanada.com. I dont know if they it will work for u if ur american but u can try anyways. Got a one way ticket for 1000 cad thats around 850 usd through british airways. By the looks of it I think i`m getting it for free. I got comfirmation from British Airways but the site hastn charged my credit card. That was over 2 months ago. I think i should run up my limit so i they can`t charge me later LOL.

Anyway will be arrving in phuket beginning of dec and start looking for a place. Would like to meet the local 2+2 community. Anybody interested in a few drink and give me a few tips about finding a place or phuket in general PM me. Thanks later guys.

I read too fast and didnt catch that u wanted round trip. You should still check that site out cuz out of all the sites i`v looked around for tickets, this site had the cheapest. Only problem is if ur not flying out of canada u have to call them to book i guess. I tried doing some searches flying out of LA and it told me i had to call a 1 800 number.

Why is it that everyone seems to be moving to Phuket over BKK?

For me Bkk is way too busy. Been there a bunch of times and i just hate the traffic. And i prefer beaches over city life.

How big is Phuket? What sort of things exist in BKK that I'd miss living in Phuket?

I imagine Phuket as alot lot like Hawaii, with Bangkok being like Los Angeles. However, having never been to Phuket nor Hawaii nor Los Angeles I'm not sure how accurate that would be. It won't stop me from assuming that though.

Also, forget the above about nana. I forgot this weekend was the king's sister's mourning/funeral stuff. Nothing's gonna be open probably.

Actually Los Angeles isn't really indicative of American culture imo, whereas Bangkok has alot of Thai Thai. So I dunno. MAybe not a good analogy. Maybe Bangkok is more like Paris. However, I've also never been to Paris. But whatever.

Gist being that Phuket is very touristy. Bangkok is not so touristy and more urban.

I don't know too much about phuket but if its anything like samui then ur just gonna miss the beaches i guess. Although u can still go to the beach from BKK if u travel to Pattaya. Its an hour or so drive away if i remember correctly. To me bkk was just another big city. Lots of shopping, clubs whatever. IF u can tolerate the traffic in bkk and having to pay transportation all the time then it would be ok for u. Driving in bkk would be crazy if u'v never driven there b4. U'll c once u get there.

BKK is definitely unique (at least amongst cities I've been to) and you can't really compare it to LA and definitely not Paris. I guess a lot of big cities share some similarities, especially European ones from my experience, but BKK is another animal entirely. To find an adequate city for comparison you might have to look elsewhere in SEA like maybe Manilla or Jakarta (haven't been to either). Bangkok is probably a lot more modern than those two though but you would probably still feel some of dirty, semi third world qualities that Bangkok has. Bangkok really grows on you though and I remember hating it the first time I went (2 years ago), liking it a little more the second time, enjoying it the third time, and loving it ever since. I guess the point of my post is that you have to see BKK for what it is and not try to compare it to anywhere else. I'm from a big city (NYC) and I def miss the conveniences and variety that a large city like BKK offers. Can't wait to move there at the end of January!

U have to go to the immigration office, i think its somewhere on ratchaphisek or how it is called.

@ fletcher, the place I posted goes for minimum 1 month rentals, maybe extend your stay to the 8th of january or ask them for a shorter rent deal.

Most serviced apartments do minimum rentals of 1 month i think.

Winlongplace got posted a lot too, check it out: http://www.winlongplace.com/default.asp

So you will come on 8th of december already?

@ dire, r u in bkk atm?

nigthlife, massage parlours, hottest girls, sick shopping, the best food

you have much more choices in bkk and its just bigger and better and not so touristy and if you get sick of it you can just take a 1 hour flight to phuket or a 2 hour taxi ride to pattaya cha am or whatever

and yes BKK is def ***** unique and no comparison to other cities, let alone how safe this place is for foreigners...its amazing. No comparaision to jakarta or manila, havent been to manila but read the phillipines thread. Its a ***** dangerous city and jakarta is a ****hole, its no so dangerous but far away from the awesomeness of bkk and its people. The only hot thing in jakarta is the stadium club...anyone been there?

How is the internet here? Obv that matters more than anything? How is the location?

Also has anyone stayed at these different room types? Hard as hell to find the real differences between them.

basicaly, most of the women are uglier and older(if you'd seen some of the monsters the guys from phuket post on their facebooks), the prices for everything is higher yet quality is much worse. High quality food is rare compared to horrible food. Theres little to no market for GOOD imported goods. Nightlife is absolutely horrid. Theres way more crime and ripping off, taxis suck.. etc etc

Bangkok you're just 60$ away from a beach and 3$ away from everything else.
Pumpui's right unfortunately. Phuket still does have a load of plus sides though. And I'm basically living here over Bangkok because I actually think i'd die in BKK. the place is just too crazy

Yeah, so basiclly, this is PUMPUI returning and retrolling again. He's the sad little loser who calls everyone else a loser.

He's has no life experiences but he is:
smarter
stronger
better looking
has had 100000M better looking women than anyone in the world
professional bodybuilder
professional racer
professional bigot
French Canadian

therefore he is pure awesomeness that no human could dare to achieve.

IOW giving a lot of credence to his opinion is pretty ******ed, imo.

heh, i feel the complete opposite. I need to move to BKK because I'll die if I stay in Phuket for 5 more months.

This is pretty much spot on except for the food. The italian/indian/mexican food I've had in Phuket has been much better than in BKK. I can't really comment on the Thai food and there are excellent restaurants in BKK, but to say the food in Phuket is horrible is very misleading.

The nightlife and women here really can't compare to BKK at all. I wouldn't really call it horrid though. Going to Bangla Road every night is going to suck the life out of your soul, but there are pretty cool pool halls and beachside bars here. And a night out in Phuket Town is always fun.

Ah of course, because at the ripe experienced age of what, 21?, you know more than anyone about everything.

BTW, you still live in Phuket so if you want to get personal with me, go for it. In my experiences there are real consequences for people taking shots.

Or, perhaps, more accurately, you alienated every single person you've met in Phuket with your complete douchitude so that you hate Phuket because no one can bare spending more than 1 min with you without wanting give you smack across your 12 yr old face. So you soend your time in your house in the ghetooist section of Phuket, alone, trolling the interwebz and complaining about Phuket nonstop when you pretty much know Fk All about Fk All.

LOL as if anyone is friends with you on facebook.

There are about 16 of us living in Phuket who hang out with each other and we all avoid vieux/never see him out (and when we do see him out we avoid him still). Pumpui what is this your 9th account after being IP banned? Get a life fagg*t.
