When I came out here the first time like 2 years ago I flew from NYC on Korean Airlines. The airline was great but the flight was really long. It was 15 hours to Seoul, 4 hour layover, then 5 more hours to BKK. If you have friends you want to visit or something on the west coast then I would fly there first just to break up the flights a little bit, but flying from the east coast isn't that bad really.
