Go for the round trip same day. Its pretty cool with decent service and food. If they are in Phuket for just 2 days, this will be a good trip to see all the surroundings.

if they want a few days to themselves suggest koh yao yhai, its off of phuket and a quiet, relaxed island with nice scenery

How is the period between March and October in Thailand, is it really rainy? Do most grinders leave Thailand under this period or do they stay and continue as usual?

Thinking about trying out Chiang Mai in that period.

It's a common misconception that rainy season means it rains all the time. It obviously rains a bunch and some days suck but it doesn't rain so much that ppl would leave

Most do leave for the euro summer months as it's nice weather at home then and come back for the winter months when it's super nice in thailand and sucky weather back home

Ok, thx. Would you say its hard to find a room in an apartment that time of year? Easier to get your own place maybe?

Planning on touring a bit; rent a motorbike/scooter in BKK cruise the country by road for a week or two, then return. Anybody know decent/reputable rental shops within here that have sturdy bikes, that won't break down with a week+ use? I just need a thing that can handle the hills ahead up north, no need for going real fast just wanna cruise and explore average terrain (asphalt) for the most part

Edit: Can we cross the country with these rental bikes? That would be optimal so I can do the visa thing also

march is the end of the high season. there is always something available but you'd have more choice if you were looking in april/may.

pollution is pretty bad in chiang mai around that time i think, before it starts raining in april/may

hopefully some CMers can help you more. i'm just answering you based on the stuff i've heard/read

I personally believe Chiang Mai is paradise 11 out of 12 months of the year. The 1/12 month happens to be March, which single handed gives CM one of the highest lung cancer and lung disease rates in the world despite the air smelling like tropical flowers the rest of the year. I mean CM actually beats out BKK for lung disease overall which would baffle you if you came to CM right now then spent a few days down in BKK around the same time.

If you like what CM has to offer I'd recommend buying one of those proper filter masks lots of people wear around march or just spend maybe 1-2 days getting the rock bottom best value on a lease set up, then get south again until April.

I'm thinking Koh Lanta for this March myself.

I find march quite a bit easier to find places than previous months in most areas of Thailand. Also hotel deals are better while you look for an apartment. Avoid Chiang Mai in March it really does suck.

I depends on where in the country you are staying. In Pattaya it basically rains a few hours a month but in Phuket it will be 1 or 2 rain showers every day. I dont know about Chiang Mai though.

They never heard of AIS? It's the biggest telecom in Thailand.

I wouldn't really bother trying to see other islands in just two days. Plenty to check out on Phuket.
I'm guessing Kata/Karon would be a good spot to settle in. Also, I should have clarified, they are staying in Phuket for two nights but hoping to spend a couple more nights on some quiet islands nearby.

I'm not really sure what the price per night of the avg guesthouse would be but I think they are pretty flexible. Under $100 per night would be a good start.

Appreciate the response

This looks perfect. Something a little more chill and off the beaten path than Phuket. Thanks

Still trying to find a place for them to stay in Phuket for two nights if anyone has any recommendations. Somewhere in Kata/Karon would probably be best. Maybe something a little romantic but anything that's recommended by you guys I will trust.

visit 7-11 again and ask for "1-2 call", then they will understand you.

Exactly what I thought, Gave them the dongle and everything but nothing...
Asked a Thai guy and he said I need a phone to put the sim in and then text to top up? which is out of the question as it doesnt fit an iphone sim socket...

will try with the 1-2 call and see what they say. Am I looking for a new sim or a receipt with a pin number on it?

why not just put 3g on your iphone at 7/11, text the code to activate, and tether to your laptop? maybe i'm missing something but everyone seems to do it that way here, never see anyone with dongles or pocket wifis

Lol at expecting an unskilled worker that gets paid $300 a month or less to speak English.

I'm really amazed how some of them have good English abilities none the less though.

If you're in BKK, go to AIS at Central Embassy, 4th floor and maybe someone will speak English.

You'll be able to buy some credit there and they can setup whatever plan you need as well.
