The most annoying thing with cabs in bkk is that the driver won't understand where you want to go maybe 25% of the time but still act like he does and take you somewhere random. so you will have to monitor your trip a bit of you go to a location open for misinterpretation.
Maybe some of them have a rigged meter and you pay 30% more than you should but who cares when it is basically free anyway.
And then no seatbelt in the backseat? why... i don't get it.
Having a hard time getting picked up with meter at odd times and at tourist places I would have thought was a general world problem and not only related to bkk

yeah rigged meter are a problem , many time my gf said we paid 80 baht only to go there , so we ll pay you 80 only instead of the 120 on your meter , and the taxi said ok without any arguing. If i was alone i wouldnt dare tho.

I'd say Asoke and Nana are the only areas where the tuk tuk & taxi mafia has a stronghold.

Elsewhere ez game if you spend less than 1h to learn how to say street numbers in thai, unless you want to take really long rides (drivers will straight up refuse taking you).

I'm hardly ever around khao san, but I never had issues with taxis there. The drivers however tend to have problems with the cops there that try to find reasons to shake them down.

Drivers sometimes can be jelly though if you're with a non thai azn girl and drive to wrong locations to make you look bad infront of the girl for your alleged ****ty thai abilities (only reason I can think of for this recurring theme).

Never encountered a rigged meter and I take about 60 cab rides a month.

If you have a very low success rate with drivers understanding you (should be close to 100% if you aren't with a girl), your thai pronunciation is most likely really bad. Drivers mostly confirm where you want to go right away, which is the right time to rectify misunderstandings.

At asoke there are so many metered taxis, same as Nana.... I assume you're talking about the bunch of dicks right in front of soi cowboy? If so then simply ignore them and take the next taxi that's driving towards you. Shouldn't be more than 10 seconds.

At Nana I don't even know what you're talking about? Most taxi's will turn on the meter when asked. Sometimes they try to get 100b. If that's the case then take the next one.

I have noticed a rigged meter, but it's so subtle that you hardly notice on shorter rides.

I mostly use uber now. So far ive done around 10 trips and all 10 were good, but two needed directions from me. That could have been problematic if you are new to BKK.

On the side of the exchange tower and opposite to it, it's not a problem but I always had huge issues getting a cab around Terminal 21, where there is an active taxi mafia charging mostly ~400 baht for rides, with no normal drivers going into the sois around it.

Same issue around Nana, although I'm hardly ever there.

Need to check your info bro.
In the real story, he's found the next morning on the beach with his head cracked open and his penis hanging out. They found a bloody hatchet near the scene which happened to belong to the driver of the truck that he threw that rock at. Turns out it wasn't the truck driver though since he was an upstanding memeber of the taxi drivers union. In fact a migrant worker from Myanmar had stolen the murder weapon from the truck later that night and used it in a random unprovoked act of violence and gay lust. A massive coincidence, but indisputable nonetheless, as police were able to obtain a full confession.

I had my doubts, I'll admit....but upon further questioning a high ranking police official confirmed the case is "complete" and "perfect."

The unelected prime minister commented tourists can not expect to be safe with their penises hanging out, and that first priority was Thailand's image. Foreign police had concluded their observations and praised the entire investigation, going so far as to say it was as if the Thai officers had studied from the same textbooks. Early TAT statistics show tourism has been unaffected, and defamation charges have been filed vs 100,000 social media users.

Not a single time have they been a bitch. I'm on a 100% meter AND give back change sample. Never had to ask to put on. Only weird time was going to Central Pinklao and some driver having a rave party in his car definitely on drugs dropped me off in the middle of nowhere, like literally at 5 am in some slum or whatever I was like wat just happened and had an interesting walk.

They sometimes don't wanna go obviously but when I get it's all cool. Is this the norm and normal? Where did that 2/3 are shady come from. Obviously avoid those that are parked or waiting outside farang territory. Bkk taxis (compared to Phils I.e.)

Clearly all the taxi drivers in BKK are good people and all the reports of them being shady is fabricated by the internet then.

TAT would pretend that it will even attract tourists

actually yeah they had 'martial law tourism' so maybe 'visit murder beach' (as German media are calling it) will be the next promotional tool. AC bar can do more costume parties with novelty garden hoes and no sex on the beach signs

Quite common at teh moment and u should be v cautious. I read reports on bangkok expats at fb about tis and i would assume oftentimes those guys are up to no good. Seems to be happening on a daily basis lately mainly around nana and asoke

They have been doing that for years already. Scared the **** out of me the first time as I thought they'd steal my cash or plant something on me.

I didn't have a passport copy on me, but lying to them about living at khao san was enough to deter them from taking a trip with me to my apartment.

At first I thought they were off duty cops looking for a big payday, but lately I have seen them at the intersection opposite to terminal 21 checking totally normal looking older tourists at 6pm or so, so they must be doing this semi full time.

2 popular companies are True and AIS - usually have stores located in Big C's or shopping centres (not sure where exactly in CM though), where you can purchase the internet dongle. Myself and several others had a few problems with AIS lately, so I recommend True.

Price is approximately 750 baht for the dongle, and about 900 a month for 5gb. Prices might be other way around but was 1800 baht to get started anyway, and the connection has been perfect. Just dont use it for watching videos/streams as you will use up all the gb quickly.

^Or tether as smart phone. Had a AIS dongle myself wasn't any better than using a standardish Android. Dtac is also a good option but don't know best for CM tbh

Which area do they want stay in? I would guess somewhere in Kata/Karon for a honeymoon but still "nothing to expensive" could mean anything.

I wouldn't really bother trying to see other islands in just two days. Plenty to check out on Phuket.
