Never happened once with me. Always wanted 100 baht or so, despite people already being on it, and the CM bird I was staying with, doing the talking. She was amazed.
Tuk tuks were a rip off and I always needed one to get back to hers at night at Huay Kaow Rd. imho, you need transport in CM, and I know others who say the same. Only fair to warn guys. Pattaya and Bkk are a lot easier to get around if you don't have your own transport.

The reason you aren't getting it for 15 baht is because you are stopping to negotiate before getting on (like a tourist) rather than just getting on and paying the standard fare as a local would do.

Contrary to what it might say in lonely planet, attempting to negotiate isn't really a good idea when the price can only go up.

Lol 100 baht for red car? The most I got asked for is 50 baht.
I think price depends on how many people are in the car already. On average I pay 30-40 if its only me and 20 if there's other.
But yeah like spiv said cbf negotiating unless they say a stupid price.

But nowadays you just get in and find out what the other are paying and pay that or use the internet before going somewere. Anyway in Hua hina its 10baht, up soi on nut its 7baht.

The white songtaews can take you all the way to Sankampaeng for 15 baht, thats like a solid 20+ minute drive out of CM. Just gotta figure out which ones go where. Red ones travel around town are a few baht more. Like Spiv said, you dont negotiate or talk to the driver just get in the back.

Tuk tuks are usually ok (Ive only used a few times around town, 50-60 baht for short rides), unless you are trying to negotiate in slurred English at 2am outside Zoe, in which case of course they are going to try their luck.

Amazingly enough, the THAI bird I was with knew how to use them and was not a tourist!!!!! She had lived all her life in CM , and I had been in Thailand for several months. We got on , and the driver called her out. She explained it wasn't a private hire, she was just doing her usual **** , but he wanted more for me. That happened several times.
Anyway , no point in people arguing. Especially as they weren't there. Maybe if they thought for a minute before posting ( as if ) , that maybe, just maybe a Thai bird knew how the transport system works. Bottom line is, imho, that you need transport to get around CM. If someone doesn't want to get a bike, forget the place.

Two months So I should disregard expats I've known who stayed there for years, because " The Big Man" , says different , after 60 shifts lol ? You seem to pay more for the buses than others on here , except me? You pay twice what others pay. Does that not give you a hint bud? Like...........the prices aren't set in stone? Probably depend on whether you look like a vagrant or not? We should probably be flattered that they realized we could afford more than an average wage thai or unwashed backpacker type. The day a Thai doesn't try to charge me foreigner rates , is a day I will book an image consultant and personal shopper lol.
So who are the new type of expats who don't have transport in CM? Is it just grinders on a downswing?

because its really fun to have one in CM (and in bkk too). Just don't take it when you go out drinking and its fairly safe imo. The only reason not to have one anywhere in Thailand is if you live in bkk and are within a few minutes walk of the BTS.

motorbikes are incredibly dangerous, even more so in thailand. if i can't take a metered taxi or baht bus, i'd rather overpay for tuk tuks or walk before getting on a motorbike.

You could be right bud. I would reconsider the place if I didn't need a bike, as I hate them. Maybe I had a bad run of luck or it was due to the Royal Flower show being on. Maybe they hike scams during it. That was why I stayed with a bird I had only met via Thailovelinks. The hotels were full coz of the flower show , so I took a gamble and stayed with her. Worked out great, as she was a star. I should have stayed, but had prepaid 3 months in a Pattaya GH and had left my laptop etc there.
How much are cheap , but secure studios going for a month?

SN of the girl from Thailovelinks?
I know huay kaew residence start at 3500 baht its secure and has a pool and probably other facilities but IMO the bed looks ancient.
I think std to get a clean security studio aircon etc for 5000 or so?
I paid 6000 and extra for cleaning.

bed pads are great, I have got one if you want it BMOC at special price. I have slept on beds the same as huay kaew residence (looking at pics), the mattress suck but if you get a quality bed pad it makes a big difference.

I think you will find it much easier to negotiate a fair price for a tuk tuk in CM than you would in Phuket, BKK or Pattaya. In my experience the drivers here are more friendly and easier to negotiate with.

They generally don't use the meter in CM either (especially to destinations outside city centre) but the prices, while slightly more than BKK metered taxis are not extortionate like Phuket. For example, the ride from the airport to my house (about 20km) is 250 baht. I guess the same journey by meter would be around 150 - 175 baht.
