- yeah, phuket can be expensive, but it doesn't have to be. tuk-tuks and taxis do exist, but they are mafia controlled and therefore very expensive (about the same price as a taxi in the west). You can rent a motorbike which makes transportation very cheap and very fun. Also, you can get cheap street food and eat at cheap thai restaurants just like in BKK. You can also eat at high class expensive restaurants just like BKK.
- there are nicer beaches in thailand, but phuket (or maybe samui) offers the best mix of beaches + nightlife. They are also the most developed islands which means more people but also more western comforts.
- you can find cheap housing in phuket. guesthouses run about the same as bangkok and the rest of thailand. if you live a few km from a beach, you can find a nice, cheap house in a good neighbourhood (like pumpui's place). if you live in a villa overlooking the ocean in a gated community with 24 hr security, swimming pool, tennis courts, fitness facility, restaurant, maid service, etc, it can get pricey.
I guess my point is that if you want to live in a fun cheap exotic city with great nightlife, go to BKK. If you want good nightlife, beaches and sun, and modern comforts, go to Phuket or Samui. If you want to go to secluded tropical island just to relax, there are plenty all over thailand. Either way, thailand ****ing rules and has something for everyone. <3
