Well dsl in Thailand is overloaded. They split a line and share it with 50 people. If you pay $500 a month they will give you your own line.

On my dsl line I get SUPER FAST speeds at really strange hours when nobody else is using my line. I imagine that if you paid the $500 then these speeds would be all day long.

I dont think you can get it on Koh Tao though. Everything is kinda shaky there. Koh Tao is very nice. Samui is decent as well and very close so you can hop over there anytime you want.

Could you get 10 lines for 100 a month and have 20% of the bandwith?
Kind of. You can pay $100 and get a line that is shared by less people so you will get higher speeds.

Ah, i have finally read the whole thread.
Great info, thanks Degen!

Me and four friends are planning a vacation down there and i have a questions for you.

Where in Thailand do you recommend us to live? I think my friends prefer to rent a house, or live in a hotel at the same place the whole time(1 month at least) and then take trips from there to see other places. We need internet to play poker.

Do you got any specific houses or hotels to recommend? How do we get in touch with them if you do?

We are not only looking for nightlife, it would be cool to try things like surfing, diving and stuff like that if you know what i mean.

Thanks,
Per

I am certain he was joking about the abuse, or at least mostly joking.

Also however him and his wife are in their own home, as long as she is happy, is none of your [censored] business. Lay off.
Was that a joke? Forgive me but when people demonstrate terrible character it tends to agitate me. I don't like wife beaters either, I guess that might make me out of line too.

But on more pleasant notes, this has been a really good thread that I've really enjoyed reading. <3 Degen.
No it was not a joke. I'm sick of people giving him [censored] for that. The guy is about to have his one year anniversary with his wife but people keep talking about him like he mistreats her or something...if she wasn't happy i'm sure she would leave.

Your welcome for the thread, but please leave grandgnu alone about that.
Hey Bill, no big, but thanks for sticking up for me. Most of the people who bring up that past thing are just giving me a hard time, in a joking way.

The person in this thread calling me disgusting is entitled to their puritanical views, however misguided they may be compared with the way things are across the world.

Anyway, sorry for the thread-hijack.......back to Thailand:

QUESTION FIVE: The club scene. The wife and I enjoy bump n' grind music, not really into dancing to the hyper-techno stuff. I'm assuming that bump n' grind music would be difficult to come by at Thailand clubs, yes, no?

Its hard to tell someone where to live.

Your best bet is to travel around different areas and see what you like. I have stayed in some cool quiet areas and also in the middle of bangkok. now im living on an island. Whatever your tastes tou will find somewhere you will like. Interent is availavle everywhere.

Also, there are clubs almost everywhere in thailand so you wont have trouble finding somewhere to party.

Time to drag my American Consumer ass to Burger King and Starbucks...

Ok, thanks again! Friends and family that have been to Thailand also recommend me to travel around.

Do you know any sites where i can look at houses that are for rent?

Lets say me and my friends fly down there and decides to travel around at the beginning, how do we find a place to rent when we are down there?

Thanks,
Per

in the clubs they have amazing music and layouts and lighting and all of that...BUT NO DANCE FLOOR! It drives me insane! In RCA for instance, there are like four of the best clubs I have ever been to all in a row...gorgeous Thai college students jam packed in all of them, but you can't dance with them! Thai people are so shy that the whole club is just little tables that all the Thai people stand around and giggle and smile at each other.
Hmmm.........they would probably react like the groups of fat chicks (typically come in three's) at clubs do when Jenn and I are bumping and grinding (i.e. they piss n' moan and get all upset cause they ain't getting any)

Or, at least, we'd feel awkward being the only people bumping n' grinding (we don't necessarily need a dance floor to dance like this). It would just be weird if everyone was just watching us.

The one place in Bangkok I really like going that does have a great dance floor is the Bed and Supper Club on Sukumvit Soi 11. Seriously my favorite club in the world, and I've been to a few.

The club is split into two halves, this half has two floors of bed's that you can lay on and have drinks while listeing to music and watching people dance in the middle of the room. The second half is a pretty standard large dance floor. Problem for you is that it is mostly Techno, though I love that.
Thanks for the lengthy response and awesome info. It's not that we don't like techno music, but it all tends to sound the same after awhile and we don't pop E so it's hard to be jumping around all night (and we're closer to 30 than we are to 20)

I can do a mean running man, but I need a good 10-20 square feet of space so nobody gets hurt.

There would be nowhere to do it, not in the popular clubs. They are packed with Thai people. Like PACKED.

Ratchida area in Bangkok would probably be your best bet, you could get your own table at Hollywood bar or one of the bigger places and probably dance at your table. You'll see when you get over, its just a bit different than america...tho still really fun.

Regarding music type, you'll find lots of clubs with rap or whatever kind of music you want.
Hmmm........good point, I keep forgetting there's something silly like 4 million people in Bangkok?

Well, thanks for the info. We've got the Foxwoods trip late next month, so probably won't be planning a vacation to Thailand unless I hit big in a tourney or something.

Oh man, just finished reading everything.

Degen, how is the golf around there? Also, have you been playing for long?

I play to a 13ish handicap and am addicted to golf (among other things).

What is the approximate cost to buy a ballin' house in one of the nicer parts of the country?
Ask us about Thailand! Quote

Buy a house?

Well if you look at the fancy glossy magazines you can buy a nice house in bangkok for like 200k and up. Places like samui you have to pay 3-4x as much.

My friend got 40 acers on a small island in the south for less then $20,000 and had the house built himself for like $50,000. If you contract all the work yourself you save a ton but it is a lot of work and most people dont want to deal with all of that.

If your looking for general ideas and what rent costs check out www.MrRoomFinder.com to get an idea. But the best way to find a place to rent is to rent a motorbike and drive around. Thats when you find all of the deals that thais are renting but dont put online.

do you have to get a liscence to drive a car/motorcycle? Is it difficult to learn what all of their signs mean?

Cool thread, skimmed through some of it, seems that most are salivating. Was there a few years back and also had an incredible time. Only downside was the smell of bkk and the polution (air and water), though Phukett was spectacular.

If some of you are interested, craigslist has rental listings http://bangkok.craigslist.org/apa/

AHA! You've been hired by the Interior Ministry of Tourism to drive wealthy farangs to the country and you'll receive a percentage of the profits!

I should've known this was another pyramid scheme!

Techncially you need a license to drive but not really. I was stopped once and I showed the popo my Chicago Drivers license. He looked at it and pretended like he knew what is was and then gave it back to me and rolled out.

One time I just left the bar and I was hauling ass on my motorbike and I got pulled over by a cop at a checkpoint. Had to grease his palm with $5 but I was on my way again shortly there after.
