I much prefer koh tao, clearer water, more paradise island feel. Too much concrete on Samet for my taste. More backpackers on tao though, but i know they have some more upmarket resorts too, theres one on the end of sairee beach thats quite beautiful. Im too lazy to find out about the weather situation.

Just want to add that if the activities on koh tao is not enough for you, koh samui is only 1 and half hour boat trip away and theres lots to do there.

Quick noob question:

I'm just chilling in my room in Thailand right now and found out I can log on to both Stars and Full Tilt. I know it's illegal to play online but how risky is it exactly?

Hi everyone,

just found out this tread

i Spent last november/dec/jan all across thailand and i loved it from the late coktails on beach bars to treking in the jungle with vicious leaches sucking your big toe blood (ugh) !

Back then i paid my plane tickets with 10$/20$ SnG, but i recently steped into cash game, and i'm not doing so bad at nl100. So i figured i try to do like the cool kids and spend a few months back in thailand trying to make a living of the cards there.

I plan to hit bangkok hopefully late june, if anyone wants to meet then!

(* and sorry about the broken english)

K䲰䮥n: Samet is kind of weird. They also have water problems and when the place gets busy (weekends, public holidays) not only do rental rates skyrocket, so does water usage. I had to sleep in a tent (that was 800 baht!) one night and take a brackish half salt water shower.

Koh Tao; the snorkelling will be awesome, you can learn to dive if you want and it's easy to island jump to Phagnan or Samui if you like.

I'm thinking of going to Thailand sometime this year for some dental work/poker playing/chilling out/saving money. It seems like we have some experts on Thailand in general on here so any advice you guys can give me would be great.

First of all, has anyone had any experience with dentists over there?Or do you know what they're like? I'm looking to get my "english teeth" straightened and sorted. I get the impression that it's a high standard but very low cost. If you haven't had experience with dentists, what about healthcare in general?

I'm also trying to decide which area to live in. It seems a lot of you like Phuket however i think maybe i'm looking for something a bit more chilled out from what i've read. Don't get me wrong, i'm not looking for somewhere boring but would kinda like to be in a really chilled place but still with access to some good partying (maybe i've got Phuket wrong?). Koh Tao seems good from what i've read? Basically i'm looking for a place that i can chill, play lots of poker, and party when i want to. Maybe thats a bit vague but i hope you get what i mean.

How much do you think i'll need to live (basics: rent, bills)? I was hoping to pay around 200 per month (so nearly $400). Is this reasonable? What do you think i would get for this much. I don't mind paying more if its worth it but i am looking to save money while i'm over there.

Sorry for the long post but you guys seems to know your **** so any advice would be wicked.

Thanks

I'd love to hear a new excerpt from a day in the life of KKF in BKK.

Hi, my dad's a dentist so I know quite a bit about teeth. There's no way to magically straighten them. You can get them capped but this can be difficult to do for your entire mouth, especially if your teeth are a little messed up to begin with. The closest thing to a quick fix is a procedure where your jaw is broken into pieces and then wired shut for ~6 weeks while it heals. Your teeth will then be nice and straight. This seems insane to me, but some people do it. Your other option is getting braces or the new invisalign (sp?) things. I've seen lots of Thai people with braces but depending on how much your teeth need to be changed, you may have to wear them for up to 3 years. Obviously having visible braces and needing to go to the orthodontist every month would suck. Invisalign is basically a clear mouthguard worn all the time that slowly moves your teeth into the desired position and is almost invisible. I have no idea if this is available in Thailand. I'd suggest seeing a good dentist (I don't have any suggestions) and discussing options with him.

Thanks for your reply. I've looked into it quite a bit and "invisalign" seems like its only for slightly crooked teeth (mine are really quite crooked, not insanely so but still enough). I'm not sure though, your dad probably knows more! From what i've read, i think invisilign is available there. I was looking into getting lingual braces. They go behind your teeth. I'm not really that bothered about how long it takes because i think its quite an important thing. Much moreso than it seems to be thought of here in england. My american friends can't believe how little people think of it here in england!

I was thinking of seeing my mates step dad (a really well respected dentist and maxifacial surgeon) here in england for an appointment to see what i need, and then going overseas to get it done to pay less. Dentistry in this country is ridiculous atm.

I see your in vientiane from your post. I don't suppose you know anything about this in Laos do you. Or, for that matter, any of the other things in my last post?

You couldn't pay me to go to a dentist here. Luckily Thailand is about 30km away and easy to get to. How long are you planning on staying? I don't know if there would be any problems changing orthodontists if you went back to the UK. Definitely ask about this.

I made a thread about Laos here. If you think you might be interested in living here, I'd suggest visiting. You can travel cheaply from Bangkok. Whether you'll like it more than Thailand is a matter of personal preference.

well...

I'd definitely be open to suggestions. My friend was in Laos last year and loved it. I dont have any "set in stone" agenda. I'd just like to go abroad, get my teeth done, and chill basically (hopefully with some hot girls).

Whoiam i'm gonna pm you my msn if thats ok?

Which one of these would you choose to get from BKK to Koh Tao:

  1. Fly BKK - Koh Samui, boat Koh Samui - Koh Tao ~2800 baht
  2. Bus BKK - Chumphon, boat Chumphon - Koh Tao ~850 baht
  3. Train (2nd class) BKK - Chumphon, boat Chumphon - Koh Tao ~750 baht
The bus+ferry/catamaran trip would last for nine hours all in all. The plane + ferry would take 3-6 hours less. The trains take longer than the busses (?).

Please include fastness (our time in Thailand is limited to two weeks), experience (sightseeing etc), comfort (a/c etc) and monies (I'm not on a budget but since I have a real job money still hasnt lost its value ) to your reasoning. I will be travelling with my wife.

Just take the plane. The trains suck and the buses can be hit or miss. You can do your sightseeing in Koh Samui and Koh Tao.
