You can save a lot as a miner especially because 2 weeks out of 3 you are being fed and housed by the company at their expense. There is not a lot of opportunity to spend money when you are only in Perth 1 week out of 3.

You can definitely get by in Perth for less than 20k a year. I know this because that's more than an old age pensioner makes. You won't lead a very exciting life there on that sort of money, but that shouldn't be an issue if your goal is to work hard for 2 years and save money so you can move to Thailand.

In Ko Tao

if you want to party, stay in north end of sairee. grab a shared cab for 100 bhat from pier. Lotus Resort ~700bhat, Asia resort ~1k bhat are about the cheapest you can book in advance through agoda. book one night then look around for a better option day 2 if you like. everything is easy walking distance. there are bungalows near beach cheap if that is all you need - thats what most of the partiers stay in there.

If you dont mind being 10 minutes drive, 20 minutes walk away from clubs (200 bhat cab at night though), Id recommend nirvana guesthouse ~800bhat (renovated rooms), at the top of the hill in Mae Heed. internet worked ok for me, but I still used my stick most the time. there are lots of food options in mae heed but no clubs, just pubs. it is close to the castle party that runs once a week though.

other option is to just show up in ko tao with nothing booked, grab a share cab to sairee, and start asking people where to stay. lugging bags is a pain, but if you only have a backpack thats the way to go. sairee is really compact, and ltos of ppl just show up with nothing booked. can even go into a dive school pretend you are interested and they will find you a place.

Its not a fantasy at all, sure you will need to have a bit of a brain when it comes to saving but this can be done. I know this because I have lived over there. When I was in saving mode I was saving over $1k a week. I wonder how many of the people who are saying it cant be done have also lived there ?

Maybe i should have said with a bit of effort you can save $1k a week instead of saying easy. You will need to budget and watch what you are spending your money on. Obv you cant go out drinking every week and eat at nice restaurants all the time but if you are not an idiot you can get your cost of living right down.
