OR, and much more likely, people are saying it because they actually feel safer here. I certainly feel safer walking around anywhere in bkk than I would in certain parts of uk etc.

Overall murder rates here are unlikely to be proportional to murder rates committed vs farang, which is the rate applicable to us.

Tourist murder rates would be of interest but I don't think they exist? (Excluding other types of death)

Lennois you english brah? thought you were a bogan (no offense)

Not sure were I feel safer I would say England on the whole. Whenever im in a sardine of a can taxi I feel if it anything hits this car, were going to die. Same for crossing the road/catching a bus/boa moto taxi.

The thai people dont seem like a violet type (unless provoked) . I mean whenever I have been out close to maybe 100+ i never seen a fight ever. In England I will see something happen pretty much 72.4% time I go out at night.

I always feel a bit edgy when I walk too the shop 7/11 after 11pm in bangchak, places like were I live people gonna get got if they dont know how to bang.

When your a tourist/expat I think you see it in a different way to when you live in your home town. England I would say is safer on the whole, but in some situations it depends .I mean good luck playing 11-a-side or 5-a-side football in England on the weekend, without a fight breaking out in one of the matches. But then catching a 40mintue taxi somewhere your not gonna die/have a drunk driver etc.

I would also go to say most of you prob live in some really nice areas with guarded security were you live, which makes you feel alot safer and knowing your room aint gonna get robbed, I have a security guard here but im pretty sure my mom would be able to knock him out.

Your also forgetting that we expats have common sense and come on forums and stuff before we visit to see what to do and what not to do, Don't ever and the rock means ever underestimate how stupid people are, I mean take K2D post in his cambo sex thread were he said some girl was sun bathing topless in Cambodia. I mean you would never do that in thailand like Hua Hin or something, you'l get banged up. So many dirty trash packers will just insult people without knowing it, say or do something stupid and this will result in someone getting hurt. It dont happen to us because for the most part we do research on what to do and not to do, so we think thailand is really really safe. Most always live in the more expensive parts of thailand were he riff raff aint.

If you "feel safer" here, it's only because you're deluding yourself (unless you grew up in Afghanistan or something). Thailand is one of the most dangerous countries in the world. Tourists are the victims of violence on a routine basis, especially in beach resort areas like Phuket, Samui and Hua Hin. Open a newspaper sometime and take a look for yourself.

Shootings of tourists in countries like Australia are so rare that when it happens it makes international news and movies are made about it. In Samui I only have to think back about 2 weeks for the last time a tourist was shot dead.

She starts getting angry over the phone and then says "maybe if I dont come, we not see any more and break up".

at some points thailand is safer than european countries, at some not.
for example its more likely than u will be beaten on the street in london than in bangkok, its more likely u will see brawl at nightclub in england than in thailand.

on the other hand its safer on england's roads etc.

one of the main factor that drive people to crime is lack of money.
if thailand would have been as rich as a england is, it would be safer country than england.

You wouldn't think you'd have to explain sample size on a poker forum. Then again, we are talking about the guy who expected to maintain 65% roi on Sitngos.

which area in bkk do you guys recommend getting a place at?
i know the asoke to ekamai areas pretty well and what they offer but are there any other areas worth looking into, and why? or most guys stick to mid suk? on nut any good?
obviosuly needs to be close to bts/mrt but what i am after is some area with nice lively 'atmosphere' not touristy or too 'expaty', nice wide offering of restaurants, cafes/bars, close to shops/malls/gym etc. not really concerned with night life since can travel for that

I'm kiwi PE but spent some time in UK. You call us bogans chap? I was talking about violent crime there, obviously roads are dangerous as fook yer.

You make it sound like everyone is deluded and desperate to think this place is safe spiv, when the reality is it feels safer from violent crime because there is less aggression imo (in bkk anyway.) I saw more fights/aggression in aus/nz in my 4 weeks back there than I have here in years. All rugby meat heads looking for a brawl, and lots of racial tension with the Lebanese etc. Probably less likely to result in murder though I guess. Although there is not far off a murder a day in aus with 22 mil population.

22 mil visitors to Thailand a year, but obv temp visitors so can't compare the numbers (also prob inflated with visa runners)

In which respects?

I snap move back down under if cost of living was comparable.

Only other advantage here for me is easy availability of slootz, but they all get kinda boring after couple years imo.

Oh and btw lad, if you see 100 fights in 3 nights around aus, and 0 fights around Thailand in say 3 years, sample size isn't an issue is it. Slight exaggeration to make my point

No I think it is safer here when it comes to random acts of mindless violence. The uk/london and even my home town have a much higher air of menace about them and a stranger like spiv would get into a fight on his first night he went drinking in my local town.

In fact Spiv as you like talking about sample sizes and how people feel, can i ask when the last time you walked around London or a **** ass town in Essex was?

but the index is correct cus as i have mentioned there are many more factors at play rather than just how many pub fights you see here compared to uk/nz/aus.

You aren't really comparing like with like, that's the issue here. If you saw aggression and fights in Aus and NZ it's because you spent most of your time in Aus and NZ in bars with drunk young people. It's a statistical fact that drunk 18-25 year old men are the most violent people there are, anywhere in the world.

If you spent all your time in Thailand in Haad Rin surrounded by drunk backpackers you'd see just as many brawls and fights. In fact I've been there once ever, and in that night was involved in 2 fights and witnessed at least half a dozen others. And unlike when it happens at home in Australia, there were no bouncers or police to break them up. They only end when someone loses interest or gets knocked out. When brawls happen here, they often end in an exchange of gunfire.

The reason you see less of it in Thailand is because you are going to different kinds of places. I.E. beer bars and gogo bars filled with hookers and older expats, who don't fight anywhere near as often as 21 year olds because they have grown up. Even when you do go to clubs, there aren't that many teenage males in them, and very few young Thai men, because they can't afford the prices. If you went out in Australia and only frequented wine bars where most of the clientele was 40+, or classy bars in 5-star hotels, you wouldn't see any fights either.

So yeah, the chances of being involved in a bar fight here is probably less than at home, but that's more a function of the kind of places you are going to than anything else. The rest of the stuff that people are talking about (chances of getting robbed/mugged/raped/shot) is just a case of self-delusion and small sample size. You are far, far more likely to be the victim of that kind of violent crime in Thailand than any western country.

I lived in Australia for 30 years and never once heard of anyone I know being mugged or shot. OTOH I've been here only a few years and already I know dozens of people who have been robbed in Thailand, at least 2 who have been shot, and many more who have been threatened with guns. One of my best friends here was shot in the leg last year by 2 Thais who were trying to steal his girlfriend's bag. I personally had to fight off a (German) guy who attacked me with a meat cleaver a few months back. A friend who had a motorbike accident woke up to find that all his jewellery/watch had been stolen by the people first on the scene. Another friend was hit in the head with a brick and had his wallet stolen while walking home alone. A friend who ran a bar in Lamai watched as the Thai wife of a western man who slept with one his bargirls turned up with a shotgun and shot the girl point blank in the stomach. She died on the way to hospital. 2 nights ago, a British guy walking his dog down the road ran into a Thai guy who didn't like the look of his dog, so just shot it. FFS I've been sitting in the bar when one of my mate's wives came in waving around a .38 pistol just because he stayed out later than he said he was going to.

The fact is that Thailand is a lawless society. All of the incidents above would have resulted in police presence and/or a manhunt if they happened in the UK or Australia or wherever. In Thailand, nobody even bothers to call the cops. That's what makes it dangerous here, complete lack of law enforcement means that criminals just aren't worried about getting caught.

If you feel Thailand is "safe", then it's mostly because you have your head in the sand. Gangs, guns, organised and petty crime are rife here. And unlike the most dangerous western country (USA), it's not confined to places like inner city Detroit and South Central LA where tourists would never go. It's actually concentrated to a fair degree in places that attract tourists. Also unlike western countries, the police do basically nothing about it.

The guys who live in Bangkok probably see and hear about this stuff far less because A) They are pricing themselves out of most of the bad areas by living in Farang-oriented serviced apartment blocks in rich areas and B) They aren't really members of the general expat community given that there are so many 2+2ers in Bangkok that they don't have many other expats in their social circle.
