I think there are more visual threats in big cities back home. crazy homeless guys on every street corner. guys that look like criminals that you have to walk past with your head down. also there are more open stretches beside parks / parking lots etc that you dont feel safe.

Thailand doesnt have these obvious visual threats so we feel safer.

Thailand is safe in general, the only difference with home is what I call the psycho factor. It's safe 99% of the time, but you never know when one dude is going to snap and stab you over 10bht or whatever futile reason not to lose face.

The guys have that psycho factor. The girls have that psycho factor. You can't really see it coming because it's the land of the smile. They'll smile to you then stab you in the back.

It's not a massive threat, but it requires that you be somewhat on your guards/cautious at all times. Being good at defusing tempers and tension is a plus imo.

There are lots of houses to rent in Samui, but you will be over paying if you go through any website. You are better off just staying in a hotel for a few days and look around the island....

Disagree with all that. Know lots of people who buy weed from other westerners, don't carry it around, and only smoke in the privacy of their home, with no problems. Don't believe there's a specific law against online poker for westerners, or that any non-Thais have had an issue. Laws are grey, it's not a developed country, internet is not monitored effectively (e.g. most poker sites uncensored), bribes common, etc. You can renew education visas indefinitely or get a business visa readily. Or have a work permit via a western company with offices in Thailand.

There are hundreds of stories of tourists who were the victims of violent crime in Thailand, and they weren't all angry drunks. I know it makes everyone feel better to say how safe Thailand is, but it's just not true. Illegal firearms are everywhere, and there are no shortage of desperate people who would happily kill you for 400 baht.

cambodia is a better option if you wanna smoke, as long as you dont sell it or walk up to a cop and offer him a hit of your J you should be fine, and the cops stop working at 3pm

i smoked 99.9% of days over the 10+ years before i got over here

dont even miss it now, wish i could smoke some really good weed and pig out on some cake and malts and hot fudge sundaes from time to time (which i could) but getting pussy every day is a far better natural high


the quality of the greenery isnt very good and the punishments are so severe it really isnt even close to worth it, even in cambodia where (it seems) you dont have to worry about it at all

just because you usually buy a zone at a time where you are now doesnt mean you have to in asia, the more you buy the bigger risk of a set up and more you will have to pay to get out of it, on the other hand you could make the argument that the riskiest part will be the purchasing and transport back to your apt so it wouldnt be a bad idea to stock up and be at risk as few times as possible

aint the law in kambo land just as strict as thailand. I dont do drugs because im a bodybuilder/martial artist, body cant be doing with most of that stuff. The only time I ever heard people getting caught with drugs is in set up. I heard the quality is not that good either, given the punishment its a no brainer for me

ya the law in cambo is just as strict, but when you are somewhere for 6 months and everywhere you go you get offered it, you constantly smell it when walking around by the beach, and youve never seen a cop do a thing about it makes you kinda feel its a bit more tolerated here
