For day to day stuff its going to make little difference, I agree with that. Its only once you start shooting challenging things that the difference becomes very noticable.
Lenses are more important that body for IQ generally (why I like Canon, lots of really really good glass and accessories available everywhere).
Low light performance is important for me also which is where the difference will be. I shoot a lot of muay thai fights several times/month, where I need to crank ISO for fast shutter speed in low light, and even with a fast prime lens I generally use ISO3200, and it still produces solid usable images at that level. There is a noticable difference in low light performance between entry level APSCs and the high end APS-c Canons for low light, no idea about other brands though. I have attempted to shoot with lower entry Canon camera and the noise was too much to edit out, and a lot less shots were focused. Dont underestimate the awesomeness of a more refined auto-focus system
Apparently nikon has slightly better ISO performance for the equivalent cameras, but its really a moot point as it would cost me too much to sell all my gear and rebuy Nikon for a little bit of gain.
And que the shameless self advertising... Although you may find it interesting that all of these were shot as ISO3200 on a crop sensor 60d. These are resized obv, some were shot at 10mp and some at 20mp. Obviously gear isnt everything though. I consider myself a ninja at reducing noise and sharpening without increasing (noticable) noise during editing. Enjoy.
