I gotta say I am quite looking forward to meeting you PE when I go to visit Bangkok. You sound like a real character to say the least. I realize that not many grinders have settled in Samui but it sounds like there are a few at least based on my skimming the thread. Bangkok, Pattaya and Phuket just sound a bit too hectic for me. Although until I visit them I won't know for sure. Have any grinders settled in Krabi? I would like to check out Chiang Mai for a while at some point for all the outdoors options but the lack of a beach is a drawback to me at least initially.

In Koh Samui, waves start rollin in from end of Oct to mid Feb. Waves actually peak in Nov and Dec.

Otherwise head to Phillapines and check out Siargao

pyedog, it's easy to find accomodation in Samui if you have aa day or two to look arround even in high season. I dont know about walking distance to the beach though, depending where you want to live it's gonna be easier or harder to find this for your budget. Chaweng is likely a no go, Lamai might be and some other places like Maenam actually might be good as well.

Lamai and Maenam are much smaller then Chaweng (Chaweng is not that big either) and defintily sucks for partying since theres not much but girlie bars in those places (Chaweng is not great for party either but much better then those two). Lamai and Maenam are both 20 minutes motorbike ride from Chaweng though so its not a big deal if you only go to Chaweng for party, but Chaweng has also a lot more western restaurants and companys.

Have been to both and I would go to Phukett over Samui easilly but thats just me. Also alot more grinders in Phukett from what I hear

I am also canadian, will be in samui in 2 days looking for a long term rental. Will rent a bike and look everywhere. I am in krabi right now, its also not bad for what u want....u dont need any visa to come here. Just come here and you're good for 30 days. Visa runs after that.

My first time ever trying anything like this......I have to say it was well worth the 3 hours of heart palpitations that kept me up to 5:30am after. you'd probably like koh tao. Mae head which is the town on the wharf has a lot of stuff in a small space. markets / street food / cheap restos at top of hill, a few western pubs / restaurants towards bottom. cell tower is nearby so truemov stick works really well.

For nightlife, sairee beach is 1.5km away and has a few beach bars that are pretty sweet. mostly younger tourists (full moon party crowd) with enough thai girls mixed in that you cant strike out. Can stay in sairee, but its younger, louder and food/market options arent as good. though its closer to the dirtiness at night - good or bad.

most people that stay here for any length are divers that tend to be older 30+, with a lot of 25ish full moon crowd coming in for shorter stays.

accomodations are basic. 15k gets decent aircon room which is considered pretty luxury compared to what most are staying in.

all that said, I'm heading to samui in a week as I dont plan on staying anywhere for more than a month, and ill need to extend visa. I would recommend here for a month...for a 3-5 month stretch in once place you can get better accomodations for 15k...so depends what you value. its only 3hr boat to samui.
