Yes, 2 of my mates got arrested a month or so ago driving home from a night out in Chiang Mai. They blew way over the limit, and ended up in the cells for the night, then the next day moved to the main prison building(sorry dont know names).

Was a real headache to get them out, and they were **** scared while they were in there as well, I would not want to be in there. To this day they both still swear they saw two guys sucking each other off in full view, and that everyone was constantly staring at them.

They had to do some kind of court hearing, where they had to admit what they done and a sentence was handed to them.
I guess that they were really lucky they were on tourist visas, all the Thais who were arrested at the same time as them, and blew significantly less than them into the machine ALL got 30 days in jail+the same fine(5-6k depending on how much they blew and if they had a drivers license or not).

They were sentenced last, and we were pretty certain at that stage they would be doing 30 days as well. Im guessing it could become a bit too much paperwork to put a couple of tourists in jail?

Everything was in Thai, there were no translators available. They had to fill in forms in Thai and also they had to listen/respond to the questions in the hearing in Thai. One of the police told me that if you dont have anyone available to translate they just leave you in the cells until you can organise someone to translate.

As Jspill wrote, Party download should work fine in Thailand. If it for some reason doesnt, then yes, just get somebody to mail you the installation file.

Were they driving car or motorbike?
About translation, isnt that what embassies/consulates are for to help assisting in that matter?

About the bolded part, a lot of paperwork is probably involved, plus the interaction needed with the tourists embassies.

What was the sentence given, in the end, then?

First time I ever heard of anybody having problems for drunk driving on scooters. With that being said, I personally wouldnt mind if the police made it a rule rather than an exception.

But sounds like they got of lucky, all things considered.

First time I've heard of something like this happening in CM, I basically never see any police on a night time. Do you know where abouts they were stopped exactly? what time in the evening was it?

Yup, just outside the McDonalds close to Spicies, there is a little island where they often like to park during day.

Not often there at night time, and never seen them actually do anything there other than just sit around.

Like 4-5am

EDIT: There is also a permanent police checkpoint close to Mae Ping police station, apparently for drunk driving, we normally get waved through during the day (even without helmets etc) but I wouldnt like to try my luck at nighttime.

I have seen several people(thais) there getting in trouble, while they wave us through...

I went to Kasikorn bank today, the Ramkemhueng branch. 3 years ago, I opened an account there, at that particular branch, and never had any problems with opening it or using it on a tourist visa.

Apparently my account was inactive for too long, and so they closed it. Also regulations have apparently become more strict in the past 3 years, and they told me I couldn't open an account without a work permit or study visa.

I found out Bangkok Bank is not as strict. They almost were though. They told me there was a 3rd document they would accept. a signed and sworn affidavit by me, with my Thai address, and swearing that that is where I live. They told me this affidavit had to be filled out and signed at the US embassy.

I can make an appointment to the US embassy to get this done.

What do you guys suggest?

Go ahead, get the affidavit from the US Embassy ( I called them, apparently I can get it even if I am just on a tourist visa.) and then open an account with Bangkok Bank?

Go to another branch of Kasikorn (seems to me I heard the Suk branch might still do it even just on tourist visa.) ?

Go to another bank (which bank??) that will allow me to open only on a tourist visa?

Maybe try SCB bank(purple). I opened an account there at the start of this year on tourist visa with just my passport and a lease agreement.

Just read a thread on this issue on Thaivisa.

One guy posted this article, and another poster mentioned that stricter enforcement of foreigners opening bank accounts would start TODAY August 21st.

I went to the bank today, and got shut down at Kasikorn.

Do you think this was the reason?

I know the third world is still often not that organized and laws aren't always followed.

I've heard that this varies from branch to branch a lot anyway already, do you think it will stay that way, or is there weight in them actually clamping down tighter starting today.

Did I just run sick bad??

"Ongoing checks will be made to verify whether the amounts being deposited and withdrawn fit the background profile and income of the applicant. For example, foreigners claiming to be students yet holding accounts of millions of baht would be suspect."

That would be awkward if you happened to get audited and poker is the only way you can honestly explain all the money. Wonder how much bribe you would have to pay to keep that a "grey area" still.
