I have driven automatic a few times down here and a "manual" once, which I believed was a semi automatic.
I have no interest in just buying a bike and jump right into traffic. I have way too much respect for the traffic. But I am seriously interested in learning how to operate a more powerful vehicle and learn how to read signs and rules so I can get around more.

Its just that I have no clues on how to do the above expect renting/buyin a bike and learn by my self.
Cars sucks here so they are out of the question.

And its good that it rains once in a while.

Hi 2p2,

Me and my friends went to Thailand for 2 weeks in november. While I was preparing and making research I read the whole original thread here and was very much inspired by it, thank you all. We stayed in Bangkok, Ao Nang near Krabi and Phi Phi Don. I loved Thailand so I had to come back. I booked tickets to Bangkok (9 dec to 28 feb) and I'm travelling alone this time. I spent two weeks in Bangkok partying hard, then flew to Cambodia, wasted almost 3 weeks in Phnom Penh (there I had the time and conditions to play some online poker also) and then visited Kampot, Sihanoukville and Siem Reap. I flew back to Bangkok 2 days ago and will spend the most of february here but will be visiting Myanmar from 11th to 14th. Probably I will rent an apartment here and play some online poker when I'm settled down.

This post is worthless without some pictures from Thailand:

I would like to meet some of you guys, let me know if you're intrested hanging out tonight or some other time. I'm much into nightclubbing, I'm 24 and from Europe.

Yes! (Though you spelled it wrong.) In december I lived in Rajah Mansion for two weeks for 6KB + utilities. Actually I did not like this place, room was not nice, the walls were dirty etc. but I think location was superb and I also got friends with two guys from states living there. These girls (actually there were 4 of them in my room) on the picture I picked up from Inch club and came to my place to drink. Not surprisingly they started talking about money so I did not have sex with none of them and they left. At the moment I'm at Rajah again at my friend's place because have not yet found an apartment.

Ao Nang... after heavy clubbing in Bangkok it was too quiet for me. Harder to find girls I liked but I got one Isaan girl who was ok. Seeing the hordes of small escaping crabs on the beach was interesting. We also loved the experience of eating in a barbecue buffet (for like 100B).

Tisko, I noticed because I stayed at the same place for once week around Christmas while looking for an apartment. I second the dirty walls.
I asked about krabi aonang because I stayed there for songkran last april and had just the best time of my life there, everybody so super ******ed friendly. For girls, just hit up the farang ones. Just wanted to hear what others thought of the place sins its not really a place you for partying.

Pic one looks like krabi province, its so beautiful there.

Good shot!

What time period are we talking? Might be able to borrow you a couch or a room with a bed...

As far as trading baht for online money, it really depends on how much, I lost my mastercard so I only have visa now and wouldnt like to be screwed by the monthly limit...

awesome thread

thinking about taking a month in thailand but not sure where I'd want to stay exactly. part of me wants to just relax on the beaches of phuket but another part wants to check out bkk and what that has to offer. i'd like to stay at a beach that is kind of far removed from the business of everyday life but still offers decent night life. w/ that in mind, you guys know any decent apartments that offer monthly rentals (1k - 2k a month)

nazahl, visit two three places and get a feel for the county. I think coming here for only one month and rent an apartment is a mistake. If your budget for housing is 1-2K usd then you can live very well in hotels and guesthouses.

It sounds like you want the islands, depends on what type of nightlife.

koh phangan = farang party
koh samui = mixed. farang, thai, hookers, bargirls
phuket = mixed. farang, thai, hookers, bargirls
phi phi = farang party

hey guys, i'm just about to book my ticket online and will hopefully be arriving in thailand this weekend..
i was planning on booking a oneway fare and organising the trip when i get out there.. is this going to be a problem or do i need a return fare in order to get granted the 30day tourist visa?

(i was initially going to fly into vietnam but it appears i have to wait 2weeks to get a visa??) i'm a 22year old irish student if this somehow makes a difference btw..

yea, realized that would be a mistake after reading through the thread some more. while i think itd be sweet to check out the islands and everything but Id also like to get a feel for thai culture/history and all that (im thinking this would be further north?). i have a pretty flexible schedule/timeline so and I'd like to get the most out of this trip.

u think you could translate farang party? im thinking its just mostly a tourist spot where whites go to party on vacation but not sure.

nazahl, thats exactly what I ment with farang party.
Something like phuket > samui > bangkok > chaingmai(north, cultural) is possible in one month if you fly there. But hopping on so many planes in just one month seems to much for imo. Id recommend you to pick up the latest version of the lonely planet ore a book like it. It comes in pretty handy sometimes and will help you lay out a travelplan. Flexibility is a must while traveling like that. Don't be surprised if you find a comfortable hammock on a beach somewhere and stay a week extra there, it happens.

monkeyman_, im on a 60+60 visa and did not have a problem coming in on a one way. I don't think you will have any problems, and if you do they are easily fixed. As most problems are. There is alot of people that fly to bangkok and take it from there, you will just leave the returnthingy in ur visa empty.

I went to flight center and got a one way ticket to Phuket from Van for 850$. That was in october though, I can imagine it's more expensive in high season (now)

If you have an e-ticket, I'm not sure how Thai immigration could even determine that you don't have a return date. I mean other than spending ten minutes (or more) on the phone with a customer service rep from your airline. The lines for Thai immigration are brutal enough as it is and I doubt they would have much reason to care.

MagicNinja,

My buddy and I are staying at a cheap inn in Siam Square and flying out on Saturday. We have a room with three beds that you can crash and depending on how much baht you need I may be able to trade you it for online money.

Cheers,
Bill

Well, at the very least you have to put down you departing flight info on a ticket that they staple into your passport with your visa on it. I suppose you could make something up and then just say you changed it when you leave the country.

5 of us are coming in from feb 20th to Mar 20th. planning on staying in BKK but are flexible if something else is awesome. anyone with a line on a good, spacious, furnished place with a quality wireless connection, I'd love the heads up. we'll be dipping out on occasion to hit angkor wat and various beaches and whatnot, but want a home base.

also, anyone looking to chill with some poker players on occasion, msg me and we'll have a get together of some kind.

but anyway, if you don;t like the look of Thai women get the **** out of this thread!

For a month you really dont need a 'homebase' imo, especially if your planning on branching out to the beaches. If you go to the beaches that should take atleast 1 week if you want to make the best of it (journey to the islands consume most of the day from bk to koh chang for example) and I you dont want to be wasting money on somehwere your not staying and beach accomadation gets more expensive than bk. You can store luggage cheaply and safely at 24 hour security guesthouse and some hotels/guesthouse have wifi and almost all have a internet room with computers.

yeah, if we were all definitively going to travel everywhere any of us went, that would be true, but I'm pretty sure some of us will be more adventuresome than others. making the home base more valuable so some people can stay back. I'm also under the impression that the price of finding a monthly rental with good internet access is likely to beat out the price of a hotel room with good internet access by a decent margin, especially when considering the quality of the trip. The last time we went, some friends had a two bedroom condo in bangkok, that they rented for 3 months at about $300/mo, (this was two years ago so the dollar was stronger) that had a great wireless connection, and we just crashed with them. it was a little out of the way, but even if we had to pony up 3 months rent for a one month stay that would probably beat out how much we'd pay for a hotel room that would not be as comfy, is my guess.
