I had to buy a return/onward ticket to get a double entry tourist visa from the Thai consulate in Brisbane. You can get a ticket for about $40 with Air Asia, no biggie really.

I figured that's what I'd do. I'll call the consulate and ask before I buy it, but I can't find anything on AirAsia departing from BKK under $69 (to Rangoon). Prices must be rising to fly anywhere these days...

Hey billygstar, quick follow up on this exchange from a few days ago...

So I open a local bank account in Russia with USD, link it to Pokerstars (or any other site), play freely in Russia and/or Thailand.

When the time comes to withdraw money while in Thailand, will I need a Thai bank account? Or will I be able to cashout to the Russian bank account and then access those funds using some sort of debit card?

Based on my reading this post, I understand that there may be an intermediary in here somewhere. Would I cashout to the Russian bank, then send funds to the intermediary, and then access funds in Thailand?

Sorry if these Q's are mad obv.

^ yes you can use foreign ATM cards at a cash machine, to withdraw thai baht. so bring your Russian debit card

max. withdrawal usually 20k baht, but you can make several withdrawals

150 baht fee ($4.70) per withdrawal at all machines except AEON bank ones

this thread lists locations of those ATMs - http://www.travelforum.org/thailand/...s-bangkok.html. or http://www.aeon.co.th/en/customerser..._depositor.php

alternatively open a thai account and wire a large amount into it for $25 fee using SWIFT transfer, so that you don't need to find AEON ATMs every time (thai cards = no fee at all ATMs)

Thanks as always jspill...

So I will have an international debit card from my Russian account. This account will have USD. When I use this card in Thailand, it will use the current exchange rate and spit out Bhat accordingly?

Or else I will open a local Thai bank account, and SWIFT transfer USD from Russia to Thailand. During this SWIFT transfer, the USD will be switched to Baht? Or will the USD remain USD in the Thai account until I exchange them for Baht?

On some of the Thai consulate websites it indicates I need a round-trip airfare ticket or itinerary. I don't want to buy a round trip ticket obviously and I'd rather not buy an onward ticket with AirAsia (although it is cheap) to send in with the visa application if I don't need to.

Does anyone know if there are certain consulate offices in the States who are lenient on this? I have heard the Boston consulate is and the D.C. consulate is not. Anyone from the U.S. have any experience with this? Thanks!
You absolutley do not need a RT ticket or an outbound ticket to somewhere else. Just buy the one way and visa and you'll be fine..

Well the first step is getting that visa and whether you get it does depend on which consulate you apply to if you don't have proof of onward travel.

The next problem is with the airline. The first leg of my trip is with American Airlines to London then switching airlines. I know Delta is a pain in the ass with this onward flight crap. I just had to deal with this going to Honduras last summer with no return ticket and I had to purchase a refundable ticket for about $900 at the counter. They were very reluctant to give me a refund, by the way. They made me give them written proof that my work visa was being processed and that I would have permission to stay in the country past the 90 day tourist visa that I was issued upon arrival. Hopefully American is different.

Is a double entry tourist visa sufficient for the airline if you have no return/onward flight?

EDIT: this is intended mainly for people that have flown from the U.S. to Thailand. Non-U.S. carriers seem to be easier to deal with, but the cheapest option for me is with American Airlines.

What are some good rental sites for Bangkok? I checked out the Thailand sticky and I wasn't impressed. I probably don't know what I'm looking for though.

I have a $1k month budget. Looking for a simple place, nothing baller. I need internet, gym, close to public trans. I'm going to be spending quite a bit of time in my place so I want it to feel open and comfortable.

How much is food a month? What kinda fruit and veggies are there? Thinking about buying a rice cooker and then just eating meat from the street vendors.

I just flew back from the states last week on United. They asked for proof of onward travel. Showed my multiple entry (work not tourist) and that was fine. Multiple entry tourist should be ok. Also I've never been asked for proof of onward at thai immigration with or without visa.

I went through Los Angeles and Portland consulate and they don't require proof of outbound flight. Just send em the application, passport, 2 photos, and of course the money order..

I always went through EVA air with no problems whatsoever and thought they were pretty much all the same regarding outbound flights. I guess not!
