Our house will have the two extra bedrooms available on May 1st, give or take a week. Figure it's never too early to give people notice and start looking for new roommates. More info can be found below:

This question might have been asked before, but here goes. Does a passport with the visa have to be carried with you or will a photo copy do? I've heard that sometimes the police make random checks on farangs to see if they're overstaying their visa.

How is Phuket this time of year? I'll be in CM for at least a week, then off to the islands. Any suggestions about which islands to visit? Samui or Phi Phi are on the top 10 list.

Guess I'll be on my bike riding round the island looking. lol

Just got my 12 month visa through today so excited now, roll on the 15th!!!

I got a letter for an ED visa written by the vice president of the world muay thai council stating that I'm a competative athlete. I'm a little worried when the immigration officer looks at me and see's how fat I am.. lol

Was 70kg when I was fighting and am hovering around 96kg now

Anyway 15,000 baht sounds cheap. I'm wanting good internet and a private pool so I do have a bigger budget but just never saw anywhere that looked as cheap as the site I posted in Phuket.

thanks for you help guys.

Hey

(i will spam again)

I need to find people to fill the rooms in my apartment on sukhumvit soi 15 (bangkok). I rented the apartment for 1 year but now seems like my life is mostly going to be in china.
So I would really like to write the ownership on someone elses name. And that someone can do the same later, when plans change.
Anyways the apartment has 3 bedrooms, is 250+m2, baller and in a good area where everything you need is close.
One month rent is 60k baht +direct line internet, +maid, +electricity.

In march 2 rooms will be empty, if you only want to get one room for short period, then I ask 1k baht per day, what is a really good price for the area and for this kind of apartment.

The apartment house is called "Shiva Towers"
And btw most of the US embassy workers live also here.

Here are the pictures:
http://web.zone.ee/chaom1/apartment/

oh and btw, there is a pool, gym and squash court in the building...

Who is interested, can contact me or kevin, ryu, korea...

high season starts in november so places get booked fast after that. dont know how this year will be though after all that has happened.

you dont get much for 14k in high season if you stay alone, though

Hi guys. I'm going to Thailaind in a few weeks, starting in Bangkok and then going down to Phuket for a bit.

I was planning on then taking the train on to Malaysia and then Singapore. Does anyone know how safe this is at the moment? The British government advice is to completely avoid certain regions of Southern Thailand because of insurgency, political unrest etc. The train line doesn't actually go through any of these regions but it goes very close to them so I'm not sure whether it's such a good idea after all.

Anybody have experience of this train route or of Southern Thailand in general? Any help would be very much appreciated.

I am currently in bangkok and looking for a long terms lease and have a few questions more seasoned bangkok veterans might be able to answer. I have been looking at a few places with an agent last couple of days

1. Is it possible to rock up to a building and ask reception if there are any available condos and they put you in contact with the owners? To bypass the agents and their commission. What is their commission?
It feels like that in the newer buildings there are plenty of units available never leased and just waiting for a tenant.
2. Deposits. Standard procedure here as I understand is that the landlord has the deposit (not a 3rd party as in Aus). Anyone had problems getting it back?
3. Waterford diamond on suk close to prom pong. Any experience? Looks new and nice on internet (not visited yet) but the rents seems cheaper than for many other similar in the same area. Anyone know why? Been there?
4. Suggestions of new, nice buildings? I went to few today and liked OneX in Prom Pong
5. What is your feeling about the current market and the rents. Is your experience that there is a room for a fair bit of negotiation or in most cases you accept or decline their request
6. Anyone know of a nice 1br, asoke-ekamai, 25-35k, max 5 years old building let me know

cheers

I took the train from BKK to Penang/Butterworth in Nov and it was fine-same warnings were in place. Then took bus to KL, and train from KL to Singapore.

Hi,

427 pages a bit hard to navigate through. Just a few simple questions:

1. Anybody been to Koh Tao? Thoughts on the island? My friend and I would like to live there for 6 months. Scuba diving purposes. What websites could we use to find ballin appartments to rent (budget around 25-35k)

2. Anybody know anybody that lives there? Cost of living? Nightlife?

Thanks

Koh Tao and ballin' don't go together in the same sentence.

Its a really nice place and its very quiet, but I don't think you'll find many places that are out of control balling.

Checkout the Koh Tao Montra resort imo. Brand new.

Koh Tao is exceptionally cheap. Internet is not good.

It is a very quiet island with few thais, and mostly European backpackers who are there on a very small budget.

You would have to live in Samui if you wanted to play pokers. Koh Tao is about a 90 minute boat ride away.

Hi guys, i just had an amazing idea today; lets get a group of players together and move to thailand for a few months-year

So i started a thread on a dutch pokersite, introducing Phuket as the destination and i got a lot of replys and i already got like 6 people who would like to join me

I have read allot of the thailand-topics here on 2+2 and im gettin more and more exited everytime i read someone's thaiand story

But i have a couple of questions;

1) where do you start looking for a good crib ?

2) i think 5 people/crib is more then enough, what do you get for lets say; 2000$/3000$ a month ?

3) is Phuket any good ? i heard there are also allot of sextourists, which is no problem obv, but its thailand.. those are prolly a little different kind of sextourists (read; sick people who like to have sex with 10 year olds, because i dont want those people anywhere near me and end up in prison for chopping someones head off obv)
then we have here in the netherlands, Amsterdam (drunk, fat, balled n english)

4) Do reasonably expensive houses include good internet connections ?

5) Do many american grinders live in Thailand, if so; where most ? and why ?

6) How long can you stay with a visa, is it 2, 3 or 6 months ?

Thnx a bunch,

PietjeK

I got a PM from someone looking to stay in either BsAs or Bangkok and he wanted me to compare the two since I've spent significant time living in both. I won't copy his PM for privacy sake but here is the answers I gave. He didn't ask me about a lot of stuff so if anyone wants me to expand on something or had something different they were curious about, let me know.

1) Easy to meet people is hard to answer. There are definitely 2+2 groups in both cities that are very easy to meet and hang out with if that's your thing. So I'd give 2+2ers a wash.

For locals, it's 1000% easier to hook up with Thai locals but that is mostly a product of a lot of the expat hot spots being filled with hookers / girls looking for Western boyfriend. A lot of these girls aren't hookers in the normal sense and money often never comes up but your choices seem to be either pay them in the morning or deal with some annoying girl trying to lock you down (and occasionally both). In Argentina, this entire scene just doesn't exist. When you go out to a bar/club every girl there is a normal Argentine girl so one would think it would be just as easy as normal to pick up on girls.... except it really isn't. It's hard to explain but Argentine girls are bat**** insane sometimes and play a ton of games with you. Expect to be stood up multiple times as part of the normal courting process.

Meeting expats aside from 2+2ers is probably marginally easier in Thailand simply because there are way more expats here than in Argentina and consequently more clubs/sports leagues/bars/restaurants/etc are geared towards them.

2) Thailand is the clear winner is living cheaply. Legitimate flats can be found for US $500 in BKK whereas that costs around US $800 most of the time in BsAs and may even be more now. If you leave Bangkok, and head to the islands it gets even cheaper. That said you could spend as much as you want anywhere.

Taxis in Bangkok run around $1-3 depending on distance. Argentina, they are just slightly more but certainly not much. The SkyTrain in Bangkok will cost you between 50 cents and $1.50 to go most places, the subte/buses in Argentina will cost you under 50 cents for any distance.

Food is a lot farther apart. Thailand has tons of delicious food you can get for $1-2 per meal, Argentina expect to spend $3-5 at a typical resto. Both have a good variety of different international cuisines available at reasonable rates.

3) The nightlife scene in Buenos Aires is waaay better than the nightlife scene in Bangkok mostly for the sole reason it is a real nightlife scene. BsAs has some of the best night clubs I've ever been to and they run all night long until the early morning. In Bangkok, you don't get a real night club but instead a dance floor with 100s of tables in the middle of it. Everyone just buys a bottle (like US $50) and dances at their table. These places close at 2am and after that you have to go to an after hours club that stays open much later. These are the places that are 100% hooker filled but if you really want to get laid every night this is the place for you. Prices are rarely discussed and if you are a good looking young guy the price can often be $0. Shipping her $30-50 and saying it is for the taxi ride home in the morning is better if you want to avoid her turning psycho and calling you. Also, no matter how long you live in BKK you are always just leaving a few days later.

4) Bangkok wins for weather. Winters in Buenos Aires just suck. They don't suck like it is snowing and freezing, but they just aren't fun and the rain/cold is annoying. Winter is just wrapping up in Bangkok and I wore shorts every day. Bangkok's summers get hot and humid, but it is similar (though not as bad) in Buenos Aires. BKK does have a crappy rainy season that should be starting soon for a few months but I haven't had the displeasure of experiencing it yet so I can't comment.

Another advantage is that if the weather ever sucks in Bangkok you are a $50-200 plane ride away from your pick of world class beaches. Argentina has Punta, but meh no comparison.

Overall, the choice comes down to your preferences.

Something you didn't ask about was language. In Thailand the language required is nil if that is your desire. In Argentina, you are going to hate life if you never learn to speak passable Spanish even though it may be possible to survive (barely). Of course, even in Thailand learning Thai will enrich your life a ton but I understand some (many) don't want to make that kind of time commitment.

girls looking to meet westerners for boyfriends arent officially hookers is that what you mean adam. but they appreciate something of value in the morning.

los is what it is. dont mislead noobies, they could end up disillusioned.
