i'm sure you can too, but i'm looking for specifics. if i walk into a random store in mbk the result is almost always going to be the same.

me - 'can this dvd player play movies bought in america?'

huge smiley faced employee - 'caaaaaaannnnnn'

then i bring it home, realize it can not play american dvds, and have to go through the impossible process of trying to return an item in thailand.

id rather not go through that

this thing you have is not a visa, it is visa exempt or something that you get when you enter the country without a visa. you get 30 days if you fly in and 15 if you arrive by land

get a tourist visa for example. for every entry you get 60 days and you can extend that for 30 days with 1900 baht. phnom penh in cambodia ja vientiane in laos are the places to get double entry tourist visa which is good for 180 days if you optimize your coming in and out of the country

schreech,

why not just use your laptop as a dvd player? hook up the speakers and just spring for whatever the hippest video output is and hook it up to the tv. you can even use your tv for a monitor then.

i've done that in the past. but i've been hearing horror stories about stuff not working anymore, and the most you can get is 15 days. as of, like, last week. has anyone gotten a visa recently?

Unfortunately, my laptop is extremely busto and the dvd player is very finicky. Aside from that, I spend way too much time sitting at my computer and when I relax I'd like to get out of that environment and stretch out on the couch.

Hooking up my laptop to my tv may be an option in a few weeks when I get a new laptop (it's ordered from Thailand but I assume I can adjust the regional settings?) My TV is pretty old, probably circa mid 90s - do you think I'll be able to get a hookup for that or is it only possible on newer tvs?

I appreciate the advice Bill.

Well, your manufacturer resident program may be regional (e.g. my HP quickplay program is regional for dvd's but it allows you to change the region up to four times). Windows Media Player, on the other hand, doesn't care what region my dvd is from.
I know a friend of mine bought a quadriregional dvd player in China. Maybe they're available around here too.

did you go today? jussi told me you asked something here but we were in the process of donating my roll at 200nl so i forgot.

i am going near immigration tomorrow morning so if you want to tag along i will show you where it is.

i will go pretty early though, leaving my place at like 8.30am (though it is good time to go to immigration too to avoid the queues

For those looking for accommodation in Lamai - just saunter into any of the English-owned bars on the T-road (Rolling Stone, Havana, Eden Bar etc) and ask the regulars to put you onto a place.

Accommodation in Lamai is incredibly cheap - you can get a really nice place for 20k baht a month.

It's hard to believe that I'll be in Thailand next week after all this time. The free visa is an unexpected bonus. From winter to blistering heat will be a shock to the system.

To the poster (can't remember the name) who recommended that I get a good coach to help get my game up to a good win level -- I found someone locally. The coaching starts about two weeks after I return. If I can support myself playing poker instead of teaching English in Thailand, all the better.

I'll be meeting some people I know in Bangkok and CM, but I have to see Phuket along the way. If there are any 2+2ers there in late March let me know if you want to have a drink, check out the nightlife, or show me how well online poker works in Thailand.

It would take way to long to explain why I'm asking, but does anyone know of an honest gold or silver dealer in Chiang Mai? Coins or bullion, not jewelry. I know that scammers sell gems for 20x their value and I don't want to buy 24 carat gold plated coins or ingots of lead.

Thanks!

Guys who were just here said their internet connection was better than Thailand. Make sure you pester them for a bunch of free internet cards since you can only get them in 8-hour blocks.
