We are looking at spending ~$1500/month max for a nice apt, preferably 3 bedroom in a good apt complex with solid internet. How reasonable is this? What is the best way to go about finding an apt? Talking to the concierge at the hotel?

Also, what is the best option for opening up a Thai bank account?
$1500 just for the apartment? That would be no problem. The only problem might be the 2 months part. Alot of places don't rent for that short.

A good way to find an apartment is to get in contact with an agent in the area. IME, in Bangkok you might have some trouble looking on your own if you don't speak Thai. If you're interested in the Sukhumvit area I can recommend an agent. It took me 2 days to find a place. First day we went around to alot of different apartments, second day I decided and we all got together to sign the lease and I was sleeping there that night.

Opening a bank account is simple - just go there and ask what they need. For Bangkok Bank you just need a passport/residence and a 'letter of recommendation' from your embassy, which basically means you go there and pay $30 for a sheet of paper.

Kasikorn requires a passport only.

Dire,

PM me your agent. Know enough Thai speaking people but don't want to bug them to help me find a place.

Gonna take a trip to thailand/BKK soon, maybe as soon as a Tuesday arrival.

Not gonna play poker, probably won't even want to see internet.
I'm good on passport stuff. Gonna stay less than 30 days.
I'm good on hotel stuff. Think im gonna start with Dream hotel and then just move every few days.

Few questions:
- How much daily spending money should i expect (3meals,taxi/train,club etc)
- How much money do u guys generally keep on you? What is enough to be covered for whatever but won't increase my chances of getting jacked?
- Do places take American Express over there?
- American ATM cards (Visa Debit) work correct - and withdrawal in Baht?
- What place has the best muay thai fights? How much does it cost?
- What is the best massage parlour?
- That gokart place was in BKK?

Also if any of you locals want to kick it lemme know. Probably gonna stay a few weeks in BKK. May bounce out to the islands at some point.

thx.

Obama Euphoria Fails to Translate Into Sex Partners For Expat Women
Hopes of “election victory sex” at drunken US presidential celebrations dashed by Bangkok reality

Quote:
BANGKOK – History is being made, but not in the bedrooms of frustrated American expatriate women in Thailand’s capital, who continue to report little or no success in converting the euphoria of Barack Obama’s recent presidential victory into any kind of romantic or sexual action.

“It’s depressing, frankly,” said Camilla Morganstern, an American expat in Thailand for six years and a member of Democrats Abroad since the 2004 election. “This was supposed to be the greatest moment in our generation, and I guess it was, but I still went home alone. It was worse than New Year’s Eve last year, and the year before.”

The November 4 election victory of the first black president of the United States, as well as the perceived repudiation of the globally unpopular Bush administration, sent waves of euphoria and celebration throughout cities in not just America, but throughout the world, where informal polls favored Obama over his Republican rival by a 5 to 1 margin. Celebration events around the world brought together people united in their relief and hopefullness to drink, watch CNN’s replay of Obama’s acceptance speech, and pair up with strangers for election-victory sex. And while expatriate women in cities as diverse as Paris, Berlin, Mumbai, Cairo, and Moscow reported exceptionally good results in hooking up, Bangkok expat women reported disappointing results for the 7th straight election.

“Statistically, this should have been the sexiest, drunkest, most carefree and condom-less orgy of celebration since we tracked statistics,” said Dr Stanley Offram, a researcher in the field of election sex at the University of Florida. “The Obama election brought together an unprecedented variety of young people, fueled by a sense of revolutionary empowerment, plus the radical intoxication of breaking a racial barrier. By our estimates the odds of getting laid at an Obama victory event should have been 78%, and on average about 25% on any given day between the election and the inauguration.”

Despite these projections, the estimated number of expatriate women who managed to find a sex partner at the Democrats Abroad party at the Road House BBQ on November 5 was less than 5%, the lowest reported worldwide. Out of 41 single, available farang women who attended the party, only two, aid worker Debbie Stanovic and Pilates instructor Sarah Oberlin, had sex that night. Among the other 38 were many reports of near-misses and promising starts, but none were able to close the deal.

“When I saw Ben (Rutherford) at the bar I thought for sure I’d score,” said Liz Berber, a consultant with Deloitte. “Ben and I used to work together at Citibank Gold and we kinda dated for a while,” she explained. “I’d heard he just broke up with his girlfriend Jiraporn and I knew he was a rabid Bush-hater, so I thought it was a sure thing when he gave me a big hug. But after doing kamikaze shots and cheering at the TV screen, he said he was off to meet some friends down on ‘Silom’. He didn’t invite me. What the hell?

The weeks since the election have been similarly unproductive, leading many expatriate women to plan for a final push for victory sex at last night’s inauguration parties. “Some of us figured the inauguration was an even better environment, since it was more casual and had all sorts of Hollywood stars and music performances,” said teacher Rachel Tynsdale. “So Liz and I got really dressed up, and went to the Road House again. We figured that the Obama shirts we wore last time just weren’t sexy enough, and maybe sent the wrong message.” But despite the investment in appearances, Rachel managed to only get a phone number from a freelance photographer after chatting him up for a full 45 minutes. “He said he wanted to see me again, but that he had to go meet someone,” she explained. “ He didn’t say who.”

Some women were angry at the men they had come to see as their partners in political ideology. “What the **** is wrong with these men?” demanded a visibly drunk Eleanor Moreno, a graduate studies student. “After all the camraderie, the shared hopes, the nail-biting primaries, the catharsis and the hugs, after all that talk about the new world and change, they all vanish at midnight to go to Patpong? ****ers. If I’m going to be cast off like that I might as well be a goddamned Republican.”

For their part, the men defended their non-actions. “Hey, I like what I like,” said journalist David Kirkdale. “A historical election and all the champagne in the world isn’t going to reverse my taste in women.” When asked to elaborate on what kind of women he liked, he said “you know, thin ones.”

Some women remained sanguine about the poor results, insisting that sex wasn’t the point as long as the nation and world were starting a new chapter, as well as noting that expat women also reported low incidence of election sex in Manila, Tokyo, Shanghai, Rio De Janeiro, and Caracas. “The next eight years are going to be a turning point in history, and that’s what counts,” said Teena Carmek, a strategic planner. “On the other hand, if during that time, men in Bangkok learned to look past shallow beauty and start appreciating women for being intellectual and political partners, well, let’s just say that would be change I could believe in.”

it all depends on where/what food you're going to eat and where/how often you plan to go out to clubs. it could range anywhere from 40 to 400usd.

- How much money do u guys generally keep on you? What is enough to be covered for whatever but won't increase my chances of getting jacked?
the risk of getting jacked isn't that great unless you're stumbling around blindly drunk at 2am. i usually keep 100-300usd on me whenever i go out.

- Do places take American Express over there?
probably. they take visa and mastercard.

- American ATM cards (Visa Debit) work correct - and withdrawal in Baht?
yes

- What place has the best muay thai fights? How much does it cost?
lumphini stadium. 2000baht for vip farang seats. cheaper if you get a thai to buy your tickets.

- What is the best massage parlour?
not sure

- That gokart place was in BKK?
next to rca
hope that helps a bit

Wow 400 USD a day? That is crazy compared to the range i had thought. But I guess that 2000baht thai fight is like $60usd so that kinda makes sense.

I figured with the conversion rate there wouldn't be too much cost outside of Hotel fees. I do want to experience the cities/beaches and different places to eat. So I guess I'll just pay as I go and not worry about it.

Thanks for quick response.

400 dollars a day is if you ball outta control eating 30-100dollar meals and party at the best clubs.

on average, i guess i spend about 25-30usd/day on food (fruit for breakfast, and international restaurants for lunch a dinner), and around 100usd when I go out at night.

Pretty standard I guess, if you don't mind all that shopping.

If you buy very cheap clothes you will have clothes that look very cheap, if you dont mind that its ok. Otherwise the big international brands are about the same price as back home.

that doesn't make sense if you plan to check out a few of the islands while you're hear. you still have to pack whatever you buy. plus it will just make you look like a cheap clueless farang.

I originally thought this was a good idea but I've found all the cheap clothes are fake and really don't last too long. Plus the shape and sizes of these cheap clothes pretty much suck. And then normal, decent clothes from the shopping malls seem to be priced about the same as back home. Unless you can be bothered to really search for a bargain.

There's definitely loads of clothes and things out here to buy, but if you have a few nice threads back home I'd bring them just incase.

just my experience anyway!

Just finished my last job interview for a while, so now I feel not so degenerate figuring out what it will take for me to live in Thailand... basic questions I know

1) Internet. I know this will be different based on city, but how much do you pay per month for the most reliable internet?
2) Poker sites. This has already been answered many times, but I've never paid attention. I currently only play on Full Tilt. Will I just be able to log on, or do I need to do something special?
3) Visas. I'd start with a 60-day tourist visa, then what are my options until I need to fly back home (embassy stamps, visa runs, etc.)?
4) Somewhere in this thread I read that there was a 2+2er or friend of one living in Chiang Mai. If you see this, please PM me, re getting an apartment and internet.

Bangkok has the best internet. Something around 2500 baht/mo for the fastest speed. Phuket internet is fairly good as well. I assume Chang Mai and Samui are the same. Other islands have internet but it's a bit sketchier.

Full Tilt works fine. Same with stars, party, ipoker and betfair and other euro sites.

3) Visas. I'd start with a 60-day tourist visa, then what are my options until I need to fly back home (embassy stamps, visa runs, etc.)?
you get 60days then you can go an immigration office in bkk or phuket or wherever and get an extra 30 days. after that, your best bet is to go to vientiane or phnom penh if you want a double entry TV, or many other surrounding countries for single entry TVs.

4) Somewhere in this thread I read that there was a 2+2er or friend of one living in Chiang Mai. If you see this, please PM me, re getting an apartment and internet.
can't help with the last question

ok so to understand the visa thing a bit better

1. 60-day tourist visa
2. 30-day stamp from embassy
3. single entry tourist visa for how many days? or double entry tourist visa for how many days?
4. ???

Is step 3 the end of the line? 4 months isn't bad or anything, just want to know exactly how much time I have.

1. 60-day tourist visaYou get it from Embassy before leaving. Then inside Thailand you can extend it for another 30 days.
2. 30-day stamp from embassyNo idea whats this. Maybe you mean Visa-On-Arrival? Some countries can apply for 30-day visa on border. Some have it on 15 days. I have no idea what country you are from, so check it out for yourself.
3. single entry tourist visa for how many days? or double entry tourist visa for how many days?Single entry tourist visa is what you meant in Step 1(60+30 days). Double entry is the same, exept 60+30+60+30 days.

I would prolly say the night life is better in phuket. From experience Samui is more of a family oriented place.

Sorry I'm still a bit confused. How do I extend the visa for 30 days? That's what I meant by the embassy stamp... As for the double entry visa, that means that I can stay for 60 days, extend it for 30, leave for like 1 day, come back, stay for 60 days, extend it for 30? So i can stay for essentially 270 days?

For the 30 day extension on your TV, you just go to the local thai immigration office and apply. as long as you're not covered in blood reeking like booze you will get the extension.

The double entry TV works just like you assumed.

visa on arrival is different than the "30 day stamp" which is called visa exemption.

I have written about this too many times already in this thread so search for it or go here: http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/Visa-V...P-t229089.html
