I think this is pretty easy to understand, reading some newspapers.

Thanks I read newspaper everyday, it's free in the library.

About the coup 2 years ago here's what The chief of the army has to say:

Quote:
There have been several occasions over the past few weeks when rumours of military intervention have swirled around Bangkok; Gen Anupong Paochinda, the army commander, has squashed them all.

Army chief Gen Anupong has seen his standing improve in the crisis
He argues persuasively that the military did not resolve the political rifts by intervening with its coup two years ago, and that it cannot solve the problem now.
The govt. has said many times that they do not want the army to intervene. For two reasons : a bloodbath wouldn't be nice and some part of the army ( certainly not all ) could turn against the govt resulting in a civil war.

Again you only need to read several nespapers to see that ALL the media is pro PAD ie. the MONEY is behind PAD.

Not only it's innacurate: there is anti-PAD article in numerous newspapers, just like anti-govt articles. The PAD methods have been qualified of "fascist" numerous times in the press. But the money as you say now ( and not the conservative elite pro-govt.) is waning quickly.

Quote:
Opinion polls show waning public support for the unelected coalition of royalist businessmen, academics and activists who accuse Somchai of being a puppet of his brother-in-law, Thaksin Shinawatra, ousted as prime minister by the military in 2006.

Some analysts say the PAD's powerful backers in the Bangkok establishment are getting cold feet about the damage the political strife is inflicting on the economy.

"The people who've been backing PAD in the background have got frightened that it's getting out of control. It's a threat to public order and even the structure of the state itself," historian and political analyst Chris Baker said.
And the royal family is all the time giving signs of sympathy to PAD supporters. (Like paying for the funerals of 2 PAD supporters who died some weeks ago.)

You must read some obscure newspaper, not even once the royal family has made any declaration in public concerning the PAD

just recently:

Quote:
In times past King Bhumibol Adulyadej has used his unrivalled moral authority to settle such crises. There are many Thais who wish he would intervene now.

But the 80-year-old monarch has said nothing. His only recent public statements have been an expression of concern over coastal erosion, and a reminder to a new crop of judges to be honest. So little is seen or heard of the king these days that it is impossible to guess what his thoughts are on this crisis.

But his silence makes the prospect of a royally endorsed government of national unity under an appointed prime minister - one possible solution touted by some - more remote.

A military coup seems unlikely too, although in Thailand it can never be ruled out.
So it's amazing: you see royal support everywhere when everybody press and people have no idea of what the royal position is... You must be smart.

The royal family have always paid for the funeral of people killed by the police or the army. It's not a political support by any mean.

What they are doing is ALLOWING the PAD to run over the laws and the order of the country. Don't you think this is enough sign that they are on teh same side?

Allowing? have you seen the police intervention? what do you want them to do send tanks and shoot on the crowd? there are minimum 10 000 pad people at any time. The govt. and the army want to avoid a bloodshed.

Sorry, but if you keep with this kind of inmature and offensive sentences I'm not going to keep comunicating with you and may well report you.

Sorry but if you keep posting uneducated nonsense i will continue. You certainly are very naive in your views of the PAD and the situation and quick to jump to unfounded conclusions. How long have you been in Thailand? i guess 4 months or so. Maybe you should wait to understand the country a bit more before doing political posts about it.

A few more stuff:

ABout the "royal support for the PAD crap"

Gen Chaiyasit ( ohoh that's the army )also said that soldiers should not neglect the fact that the PAD refuses to open road for a royal motorcade to pass though on its way to the royal cremation ceremony of Her Royal Highness the late Princess Galyani Vadhana.

He said the soldiers must take some kind of action on this.

He then said that army chief Anupong Paojinda would not stage a military coup to end political turmoil, because general public does not accept this action.

About "the army support crap:"

The supporter of the PAD is general Saprang: The election is internal to the army.

The choice of Gen Anupong to replace Gen. Sonthi Army C-in-C solidified the fall of Gen. Saprang, who for a period of time last year and this year many speculated would become Army C-in-C. His fall from grace has been so spectacular and public.

The army by vote decided to set aside and disgrace the PAD backed candidate for the post of chief of the army.
According to you Dardo, the army does not obey the govt. and support the PAD... you are funny.

The new general in chief never ever backed the PAD even once of course.
seriously you should quit already man

For those of you playing on Euro sites in Thailand, how is that even possible? Seems like it is 6 hours ahead of Europe which puts prime time starting at around 11PM? Ugh, what sort of schedule are you running? Guess playing through the night is correct?

Yea this time zone pretty much sucks for online poker. Games die at around 1 pm and start around 8 pm so I either gotta wake up ridiculously early or late to be able to put in some hands at peak hours.

I've been taking a look a the BBC News, and it explain very clearly the situation at Thailand:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/7716033.stm

Personally, I keep thinking it's not dangerous, specially because the government doesn't seem to have enough power to get to a real fight between 2 factions. ie. civil war.

But of course I may be wrong.

dardo, you are pretty seriously misinformed about the PAD and their support. The public media isn't supporting them by any means, they've constantly referred to them as a mob and for good reason. You were right about one thing - they are mostly backed by the elite class, as Thaksin's base was the rural/poor. But as something kind of obvious, the elite are a very small minority. Just look at the number of Thai you see wearing yellow now compared to a few months ago or whatever. So many have stopped, even though it's the national color/lucky/etc, since they don't want to even be possibly associated with the PAD in any way. Even the PAD have admitted they couldn't win an election ( so god knows what their long term goals are ). Get somebody to translate one of the radio talk shows you hear everybody listening to all the time some day.

Well, this is the important point to have, isn't it?

As long as they keep control of the army, I don't think the Government will have any other choice than to keep reacting passively and in a pacific way, like they are doing now.

Of course, I repeat, I may be wrong. But two years ago, it was like that.

From one of the BBC News I've read they want to change the electional system, so it's not one person one vote. ie. poor people votes would be worth less.

Thanks.

I have a flight scheduled for tomorrow morning to BKK and another on Sunday to Paris where I'm supposed to catch another plane to Tanzania (and for this I bought two separate round trip tickets: BKK Paris, Paris Tanzania) :-/

I hope if the first is cancelled I can get the second one rescheduled pretty cheap.

I'm not very qualified to answer this, so take my advice with a grain of salt. Waiting til you get here is probably the best way to rent a house. You get an idea of the surrounding neighborhood, an exact idea of what the house itself is like, and usually you get a better price (and yes, negotiate).

As for taxis, they have them here (mostly tuk tuks - though different from the bkk ones), but unless you're coming from the airport, there is no meter. And the prices they charge are outrageous compared to bkk (still similar to western cab fares).

When i came over I did China Air from LA to Taipei (Taiwan) 14hrs then 1hr layover and 2hr flight from Taipei to BKK.

Booking flights to BKK right now though could become an exercise in frustration as the flight cancellations due to the Shutdown of the airports is likely to roll forward for quite some time wreaking havoc on future flight plans.

LOL

Teh clearing dont seem to be going so good.
Police are being kidnapped (arrested) by PAD guards and interrogated and a group of 100 armed police retreated from a ro******* and left 9 police vans behind over fear from the protetors.
