Since gambling in Thailand is illegal even online, it is better to play from home, secretly, without telling anyone what your job is, or can you safely go and play from a coworking space?

If you lack common sense Thailand is not a good place for you.

I would have missed common sense if I had done so without first informing myself. I've never been to Thailand yet, I just read that gambling is illegal, but seeing how many players move there, it might as well have been tolerated and no one was bothering you for online poker.

Retelling his year of sadistic abuse in thai prison:

I can only warn people to stay away...
It would suck to be stuck in a Thai prison but it's highly likely this guy knew what he was doing and was correctly arrested and charged for being involved in a multi million dollar ponzi scheme that took millions of dollars off of Thai investors. Google the "Eagle Gates Ponzi scheme".

His alibi was that he was only an actor and his involvement doesn't go past that but come on now. This thread is talking about common sense. Let's use some here.

No one would argue that there would be better places in the world to be stuck in prison but to act like this is a reason to stay away is just fear porn.

More worrying is local anger brewing amongst Thais, some of who remain convinced, partly fuelled by the comments from the Thai Health Minister, that Thailand’s Covid-19 problem is a ‘farang’ import. And that the dirty farangs are the reason that Thai people are currently holed up in their homes and losing their jobs.

Last night a post was made on a popular Phuket Facebook page calling on upset Thai locals to grab some stones and make a slingshot to fire at foreigners who may have been flouting the local curfews. The same site was posting photos of ‘white’ foreigners around the island, most not wearing masks. They were becoming the target to vent three anger.

“#Get out from my country if you can not stay at home **** tourist.”

There were 5.7K of likes and 540 comments (as of lunchtime today), and hundreds of supportive comments from disgruntled locals saying they were ready to ‘take up arms’ and take on the dirty foreign tourists flaunt.

New death:

PHUKET: A 41-year-old German man is believed to commit suicide after his body was found dead with a gun in hand and a bullet hole in the head lying on the floor of a hotel room on Rat Uthit 200 Pi Rd in Patong yesterday (Aug 21).
How likely do you think is it that a western guy acquired a gun in Thailand? Sounds dodgy to me...

Had our first home invasion last night, only the GF's parents are currently there as we're in the UK but at 2am two masked guys climbed the wall cutting the barbed wire, and tried to lift the motorbike over it lol.

Luckily doors and windows were locked and her Dad heard them, woke up and they fled. But with the bad economy they might try again.

He was ultimately found not guilty and let out. No mean feat in a country with a 95% conviction rate.

Pretty much standard stuff in south east asia.

It's not like they come for rape and brutal murder (after a torture session) like in south africa and most of the time they just want to steal stuff.

Some owners use glass shards on the fence and thiefs sometimes die from the resulting cuts.

I actually think home invasions by drill rap brainwashed teenagers are more dangerous in the UK.

The dangers of south east asia are more related to racism, tribalism, jealousy, greed and a corrupt criminal system of mafia police and kangaroo courts that's stacked against you.

Does anybody have any info on the charming Chiang Mai scheme? Only seem to be able to find vague information on what it may look like, nothing official.

nothing is official so far.
they very recently changed their approach and currently plan (or talk about) opening all the new locations (chiang mai, bangkok, chon buri, hua hin and one more) under the same approach as the phuket sandbox.

this would mean: stay in SHA+ hotel, get test on arrival and on day 6 and 13, but otherwise you're nearly completely free to move as you like. you need to stay in this province (or whatever they come up with as geo-restriction) unless you do the 7+7 scheme, aka 7 days in one sandbox, the next 7 days in a different sandbox.

of course, TiT, so we'll see what they end up with... fwiw, this is supposed to start on october 1st, but most likely you will not know how it really works until the first week of october. or a little later...

Thanks, sounds better than I expected. Alot less restrictive. I suppose the only thing to do is wait until October for more concrete details.

Attempt number 1001 to lure the wealthy into their lawless corrupt to the core 3rd world country:

Quote:
The cabinet has greenlighted an economic stimulus and investment promotion package aimed at attracting wealthy foreigners and highly skilled professionals from overseas to help revive the economy post-Covid-19.

Benefits in the package include a 10-year Thai visa for not only approved special visitors but also their spouses and children, said government spokesman Thanakorn Wangboonkongchana, on Tuesday.

The government expects to attract more than a million qualified people to Thailand in the next five years, beginning next year, he said.

To obtain a long-term Thai visa, this group would be required to invest at least US$500,000 (16.5 million baht) in Thai government bonds in the form of foreign direct investment (FDI) or in real estate, he said.

The minimum income required for this group is US$80,000 per year for the past two years, while the required minimum value of assets owned is US$1 million and the minimum health insurance coverage required is US$100,000, he said.

The second target group are wealthy pensioners who are at least 50 years of age with sufficient pensions to cover their costs of living in Thailand, he said.

The people in this group are required to invest at least US$250,000 in Thai government bonds in the FDI format or in real estate, he said, adding that the minimum income required for the group is US$40,000 per person per year.

The minimum health insurance package required for this group is also US$100,000 coverage per person, he said.

The third group are the so-called work-from-Thailand professionals who are interested in living in Thailand while working remotely for their employers in other countries, he said.

The people in this third group are expected to be digital nomads and employees of large organisations who are close to retirement, he said.

The fourth and last group of foreigners expected to be interested in this long-term visa programme are highly skilled professionals who may want to come to Thailand to either work as experts in the government's target industries, Mr Thanakorn said.

Highly skilled professionals who would work as university lecturers teaching subjects related to industries of importance are also within this group, he said.

They are required to have at least five years of work experience, earn at least US$40,000 per year and hold a health insurance policy with a coverage value of US$100,000, he said.

Another article says it's at least 80k with some weird requirements but maybe they dropped them.

Quote:
Professionals working in Thailand will qualify if they have earned at least $80,000 in the past two years and hold intellectual property or a class-A scholarship with five years of research.

High-skilled professionals must have earned a minimum $80,000 in the past two years, or have a master's and work experience in a targeted industry.

These Thai visas are kind of a joke. The requirements are more difficult than a lot of places in Western Europe and b/c of that almost nobody cares enough to go through with them.

Elite visa was projected to have a million members in the first few years and ended up only 1k after 10 years.

Same thing with Smart visa. Something like 2 dozen takers in the first year lol.

Thai gov't. seems so tone deaf and competition is getting way fiercer. Lots of new countries offering up reasonable digital nomad and residency programs and probably more to come once covid dies down.

Heck, a country like Georgia which has a $400/month ave. salary just like Thailand and 18 spots higher in Human Dev. Index just went to 1-year visa free entry for citizens from 100+ countries.

Most countries are desperate to attract these tourists w/money who want to stay medium to long-term and Thailand keeps putting out these laughable visa attempts.
