I got pulled into a room with a few other guys and verbally abused for 30 mins or so heh. An elderly gent was also made to empty his wallet and then verbally abused for having 'no money' when he clearly did and was in distress, another younger lad got sent back and he had only been here two times plus they really did rip him apart, everything from his hair to the fact he looked like he was going to cry, I guess the head in that room was a very angry tom boy but although I can take a roasting myself and knew I was in the wrong I felt bad for some in that room and it was pretty much out of order. Anyway no respect for your privacy was given so essentially everyone in that room knew everything about the next guy, his financial status, what he is doing, how many times he had flew etc and like I say it was just a mockery to be honest. Anyway the officer said I would be denied entry at first and said 'Falang Think Thailand easy home, you go home watch me' sort of phrases was being thrown at me

I know which Tom Boy your are talking about. I was denied by the same ***** without any questions asked.

makes me wonder if it is the same women, I think she was quite high ranked, fairly old looking, very prison warden type look to her and she didnt really smile, at one point she even threw my passport at my head lol... that was when she discovered I had recently got a new passport in bkk, wasn't happy about that at all for some reason heh.... at-least the other staff in the room said it was her boss and most of the staff laughing you could tell it was a kind of 'I must laugh at her jokes in fear of not being sacked', very likely its the same officer

Is it really that dangerous trying to ride a scooter in Thailand, especially if you don't have any experience with them?

I like the idea of just hopping on one and going exploring, but I've read travel warnings about them and people getting seriously injured.

I would most likely have traveler's insurance and hear lots of them don't even cover scooter related accidents. Is the chance of injury overblown?

I believe last year Thailand, after many years of effort and determination, took the number 1 spot for most road death worldwide per capita.
70% of those deaths were motorcycles.
Take it for what you want as a lot of these guys drive like morons on a
Death wish.
Personally I would never live in Thailand, and probably anywhere, without a scooter but you need to drive super cautiously

I want to be free. And free from live sustaining injuries.

Someone recommended I learn to ride a scooter here in the States before I come.

I just realized I used "life sustaining injuries" incorrectly.
It's not even an actual phrase.

Even in a western country scooters are highly unstable on wet roads.

Taxis are dirt cheap in BKK - why risk life and limbs?

The states are probably more dangerous to learn as everyone drives so f'ing fast on just normal roads and can be more careless when thinking to look for motorcycles but definitely don't learn in Bangkok either.

Depends where u go, but learning to ride a gearless scooter doesn't take long. No need for a bike in BK tho, unless live there n just use it for short runs.

In most of Thailand traffic in general is pretty bike aware imo as it's the main flow of traffic. There are so many of them and everyone grows up on bikes here.

Ofc still need to be cautious and drive extra safe when in cities or congested areas etc, try to never have to rush. I've dropped my bike a few times but nothing serious, all times in rain on wet gravel while in a rush.

Lesbians are easily some of the most evil people in Asia and men largely didn't do anything to them aside from rejecting them later on for their toxic attitudes. They usually have crazy psycho mothers who turned them into crazy psychos as well.

Even in western countries the most heinous crimes are largely committed by man hating lesbians.

I don't think there is any way for a western guy to win with these types in positions of power. You are taller and more dominant so they will automatically lash out at you.

Learning to ride it, and ride it safely is easy. Its dodging all the psychos, thats the problem.
I live in a smaller village on Phuket with just 2 traffic lights, and people running red lights, drunk driving, driving in the wrong side of the road, driving in the dark with no working lights (sucks when you are out running) etc are all daily occurrences.

Re: insurance, it will usually be void if you are influenced or driving without a proper license.

Driving motorbike is easy. I advise go quickly, take all of the spots, and don't be a pussy. Haven't crashed yet once.

You can drive like that if you are made for riding. Some aren't and that's when you need to be really careful.

Most of what you are saying is being decisive and I agree - when you know how to ride very well.

Before I arrived Id never been on a scooter before, but now Ive been riding scooters for 10 years in Samui, and have been renting scooters out as a business for the last 6 years.

My advice, is use a scooter, but just take is slowly and carefully. Beware of sand, soi dogs, chinese tourists, amd maniac young thai boys, and you will be fine. Personally I couldnt be without the freedom they give you .

Thailand is number 1 in road death in the world and most of it is bike riders.

"Only 12% of Thailand’s road traffic deaths involved occupants of cars or other light vehicles, according to the 2018 WHO Global Status Report on Road Safety. Most of the dead were motorcyclists — or pedestrians."

So many motocy riders drive like f'ing morons. It's almost hard to have sympathy for the carnage in those numbers when your see how some people drive on a daily basis.

Driving a motorbike is probs my favourite thing to do, wouldn't recommend getting a scooter in Bkk unless you're a very experienced rider, which doesn't seem to be the case. If you're going to islands phuket/samui then it's almost a must. It's organised chaos, once you get the hang of the rules on the road here it's easy, I actually feel safer riding here than I do at home.

Would do some u-turns in a car park or empty street to get the hang of the weight of the bike etc, best tip I can give would be to never hit the brakes on any sorta shitty terrain(mud, sand, puddles, loose gravel)

Funny only been chased by a dog maybe twice lifetime, I dunno what the Thais do to them but they are really well behaved, in south America ~90% of dogs suicide run at you, which is hell having to deal with 10 times a day.

Read this recently...

Quote:
The Royal Thai Consulate in Cardiff states “Those who enter by air can only enter 3 times over a 6 month period (with a visa exemption)”. This is the first time I’ve seen this rule published, and the number seems low – if you’re a tourist hopping around Asia for a few months you might go through Thailand a few times.
Anyone know if there is actully any risk I won't be able to leave and come back more than 3 times over the course of 6 months? Considering I want to live in BK for 6 months while travelling outside of the country every so often, this could be a problem. 6 month multi entry visa isn't an option since I don't have any proof of self employment or a job (besides poker)

That's an old rule that got cancelled some years ago, but consulate websites often still repeat it. There's no 90 day limit per 180 anymore

This. Among my friends in Laos we have 1 death, one partially paralyzed and plenty of broken bones. Although that's even more unsafe than Thailand because half the people on the road are drunk at any time.

Riding the motorbike is by far the most dangerous thing you can do over here, nothing else compares.
