What I need first is revenue. (Yes, I know I can't be "working" in Thailand without the proper Visa. Heard this is more the spirit than letter of the law though, as long as you aren't taking jobs away from Thais.) The venture I'm looking to get off the ground may end classified as a non-profit anyways. So, no sense labeling anything until money starts rolling in.
Anyways, what I'd like to do is migrate the content from a website of mine previously hosted by an American company over to the servers of a local one here. Donations were accepted on that site, so I would also be looking to find a Thai wallet to completely eliminate Western influence. So, the chain would look like: Thai hosting --> Thai online wallet --> to Thai bank account.
Are there any recs for what I'm describing here? (It's completely legit business. Probably 85% "Disney" family-friendly content - the other 15% may be somewhat controversial depending on the reader, however I'm open to editing/negotiating what's hosted).
I can't address the online business part, but I can illuminate the bank account part. Some expats are able to walk into a Thai bank and open an account with nothing more than a visa exemption stamp in their passport. By law,as a foreigner, you can't open a bank account without a work permit but some banks will 'overlook' the law and some won't. I've even heard that a bank will refuse you one day and allow you the next 555. You never know whether it will work or not until you try. So my 1st suggestion is to just walk into a few banks and keep trying until you find a bank that allows you to open an account.
If you can't get anywhere that way, you can do what I did. I paid a government official from my wife's village to come to the bank and cosign for me. this worked great. You can use a teacher, a lawyer or any government official but they won't let you use an ordinary low class person as a cosigner.
One other suggestion. If you are going to be doing tons of interaction with the locals but don't speak Thai properly you should get a local to help you do business. If you don't have a girlfriend/boyfriend you can rent one and they will stick to you like glue and help you through all the hoops. Good luck.
