If you fly in, spend some time out (weeks or a month) like others did itt, if you don't want to spend weeks out, do a land run.

Things might have gotten easier with visas because they brought in tons of new staff after each airport had 5 hour delays go viral in the news. And I haven't read anything bad on thaivisa / elsewhere ever since that day.

One guy here managed to get in the other day with the airport fast track, even though he'd been in Thailand ~10.5 months in the last 12. This trip he'd left for 2 weeks. He's extremely handsome though.

I think these things come and go (sorry lol69). Immigration apparently is a branch of the police and they get posted to the airport for ~3 months at a time, it's a job no one wants to do because of the long commute, and maybe towards the end they get pissed off and start denying people entry. Then their shift finishes.

Or if there's some bad publicity (5 hour delays, Chinese tourists urinating on the floor so they don't lose their place in the queue), then maybe they start letting more people through for a bit rather than risk losing tourist money. The silly 20k baht cash thing too. Both those stories made international news and may have cost them some tourists who decided to go elsewhere on holiday instead.

What is worst case scenario if immigration does refuse entry? Can you just fly in again in a couple days or are you permanently flagged? I always get single entry tourist visa in advance fwiw.

You get a denied stamp which will always be in your passport. I don't think anyone's ever tested it out thoroughly to answer that question, once denied the first time people then use a land border, and keep using them / renew passport for a fresh one / switch to Ed visa / get married / cave in and buy Thai Elite card.

The stamp comes with numbers, which refer to a numbered list in the immigration act, of the reasons for denying someone. For normal tourists the reasons they use are suspicion of working illegally, or lack of proof of funds. You already know to carry 20k cash so the former is the only possibility.

So say you got denied and then attempted to fly in 2 days later, you'd be flagged. Some small chance they don't notice because it's Thailand, but probably they will, it's a big stamp. Then they'd presumably want to see lots of proof that you don't work illegally, to then let you in that time. But there are no guidelines on what that 'proof' is. It's just based on suspicion so you can never get around it.

So the worst case scenario is you're denied on pure suspicion of working illegally and then denied again, when they see the stamp and still suspect you 2 days later.

Imo just fly in from Laos, so that if you're denied, then you get flown back to Laos, then you're close to a land border (Nong Khai) for your 2nd attempt. Then pay for your Ed visa paperwork in BKK, back to Laos with it to get the Ed visa, back into Thailand again via Nong Khai, that gives you a year, then after that renew your passport for a fresh one to remove both the denied stamp and the old Ed visa, 2 birds with one stone. It'd still be in the computer records but they don't always check.

Hey.

As a person with tourist visa who will be playing online poker in Thailand, is it 100% safe to say that I play poker if someone asks? You know, work in Thailand is prohibited for foreigners with tourist visa....And "what are you doing in thailand" is gonna be pretty standard question from strangers.

Thanks!

Erik

For people who both speak english as their primary language and have stayed in Thailand for longer than 6 months, does it ever get to you that everyone does not speak english and that signs are not in english?

Haha, I know how arrogant this must come off to most people, but hear me out.

Since I assume none of you are fluent in Thai, isn't true that you never get to have any deeper or meaningful conversations with the people who don't speak fluent english?

It must drive you mad, no? All your thoughts are restricted by your limited knowledge of the Thai language and of course the nuances of the culture. So you are confined to superficial exchanges with one another... forever.

How do you deal with this?

Where to buy quality protein for cheap? Bangkok area or internet.

I consider 4500 for 4,5kg/10lbs quite expensive. I paid like 40% less in Europe.

Definitely the worst thing about living here imo.

Yea, i'm not one to go to their country and demand they learn my language but it does wear on me. Just wait til you start thinking in broken english in your own head. That's when it gets real.

Lotta foreigners make friends with other foreigners to combat this problem.

I love this question. You can basically apply this to most Asian cultures and maybe most countries around the world. But when you look at places like Thailand, Korea, China, Japan, you're basically looking at xenophobic cultures. I sometimes wonder how many Americans understand that xenophobia is actually a "thing" and what that means for the world's view on us.

People tend to have male expat friends and then girls who speak a bit of English, plus they learn a bit of Thai without becoming fluent (some get close), and then their life is focused on hobbies, online business, interaction on the internet, etc.

I wasn't really needing to read signs or have deep conversations with strangers back home either. And back home I wasnt talking to local men from the third world either, or looking for deep conversations with women, at this point in my life. So nothing really changed.

+1 I'm curious too and hope someone can provide an answer. I last searched about 2 months ago and he seems to have fallen off the face of the earth.

found this: http://zway2go.com/tim-sharky-in-thailand/

Jan 6, 2017, He went to Bangkok International Hospital for neck pain and numbness in his hands and legs. He had broken neck with bones sticking in his spinal cord and was so close to getting Paralyzed for the rest of his life. A surgery was performed immediately on him. They cut his throat open, cleared out all the bones and fixed his spinal cord. Lucky him, he will be able to walk again. My hope is that will not be for so long!

The tax on alcohol will increase by up to 30 baht per bottle, while beer will rise by 0.50 baht per can and 2.66 baht per bottle, the official said.

The tax on imported wine will rise at least 110 baht per bottle, and cigarettes will increase by 2 to 15 baht per pack, the official said.

the tax will have a negligible effect on alcohol. wine was already too expensive for me in thailand so i don't drink it when there.

the increase in the price of a beer is not going to discourage a tourist.

it might add an extra $5-10 to the cost of a trip...

And that 110bt per bottle of wine is on bottles over 1,000bt.

Always cracks me up that that 1,000+ bottle of wine is like $8 everywhere else in the world.
