Not necessarily that would be a crying shame! Just don't tell the super new guys where you're staying. And don't take anyone in your actual room / tell them your room number until you know them kinda well. They can't do anything with just your keys / wallet whatever, they need to know exactly where you're staying. So meeting randoms at a pub or whatever should be fine if we take the most basic precautions.
Also, talking about theft itself not the drugging stuff (urghhhh
) it's not even the biggest deal to get stuff stolen, just an inconvenience. Any world traveller should take out annual multi trip insurance unless your credit card already covers you. I spend $340 AUD / yr through Travel Insurance Direct and am covered for everything with $0 premiums. The policy covers a $5k laptop, unlimited other gadgets up to $2k each, $1k cash, then all the missed flights, medical etc etc. For people that travel as much as us it's a total freeroll - breakeven point is probably 45 days overseas per year or something super low. Just put your passport and backup drives in the hotel safe, and password protect your laptop and you're pretty much watertight, everything can get stolen and within a week you're no poorer. Full disclosure! - I didn't do this until after the incident!!!! They would have been able to plant a trojan, find my passwords - everything, ughhhh
