agree with all, but i much prefer the weather in chiang mai to phuket. it's a bit cooler in the day (30 - 35) and a pretty ideal temperature at night (15 - 20). it's great going out at night and not being a sweaty mess when you arrive at a bar.

another plus for chiang mai is it's quite a bit safer to drive a motorbike here than phuket.

i gotta agree with ntb here. buying one when you are staying under 6 months is not a very good idea for the reasons mentioned. pokerspiv, you are giving good advice but you need to put yourself into a thailand virgin's shoes and the picture is all different.
Well i would agree if it wasn't for you guys insisting that everyone must rent a bike as soon as they come anyway. Thailand virgins shouldn't really be on a bike until they've been here a while imo.

All I'm saying is that if you are definitely planning on staying longer than 3 months, and plan on having a bike for all of that time, then buying a used bike makes better financial sense than renting one. And if for some reason you decide to cut your trip short, you can always resell it. It's not like you are taking some huge financial risk outlaying $500 anyway.

IDL doesn't make you any more legal on your motorbike unless you have a motorcycle liscense back home.

well first of all whenever I am showing a new guy around i don't make them drive them selves. we rent a bike and me and my gf drive up to 2 people around for couple of days to see what the traffic is like, where things are and then teach them how to drive themselves on empty roads.

obviously not everyone want to drive even after few weeks and they are left with driving with someone else. tuktuk prices are so ridiculous that it's just a must here to atleast try to drive your own bike to get to places. distances are too big for walking/cycling.

about the other thing. yes it might be +ev to buy and sell a used buy if you only think about money. not everyone only thinks about money. some people prefer not having the hassle of finding a used bike that they like and not having to worry if it will run 200km and them stop not to even mention about changing the names etc.

i think the reason we recommend renting for under 6 months is just because most of the people who come for that period have ended up renting. not because we make them but because it's the most hasslefree choice.

Hello,

Both of my wives have died and I am considering a move to Thailand. Bangkok. I am wanting to know this. How many of you have Thai girlfriends and wives and how did you meet them? Or are all of these girls you are talking about being with prostitutes? As a Christian, I would have to turn that down. I don't find it attractive. I have also been told that it is hard to get upper class Thai girls to consider you because their family would look down upon them being with a non-Thai. Are any of you with meeting upper class Thai beauties?

Thanks :-O)

Jake

After short consideration, I think this is actually appropriate.

As for dating HiSo girls you'll need to get the BKK SUperBallas (who I understand are all dating Rich, HiSo, related to royal family girls) to answer.

how safe would having a real motorcycle be out there (mostly in terms of theft/vandalism)? does anyone know the rough cost of shipping something like that from say LA?

no idea about shipping but you will have to pay import taxes on it too and what i've read they are pretty ridiculous

Hi Jake,

You seem to have a really big nose. As beautiful upper-class Thai girls find this quite unattractive, I don't like your chances. In fact it makes me wonder how you got 2 wives in the first place - do you have a correspondingly large penis? Because in Thailand, this too is a minus, as Thai women have smaller vaginas and it hurts them you see. Perhaps you need to reconsider coming here.

Sincerely,
Adrian

Just a few questions;
1. How hard is it to get to another country from Phuket for the sole purpose of re-entering Thailand? (visa purposes)
2. What diseases are common in Phuket, and are there any shots I should be looking into getting?
3. What is the taxi situation like over there? Is it cheap enough to get by without renting motorbikes?
4. Best place for nightlife, and how far away is is from Kata?
5. Where do I obtain a visa, can I get it when I arrive?
6. Any other things I need to do/tips before coming over?

1. very easy. there are daily busses to burma for this purpose. personally I take a morning flight to kuala lumpur (1 hour), have lunch at the McDonalds there and fly early afternoon. door to door about 8 hours
2. depends what shots you have already. you should go ask your doctor atleast 1 month before you are coming, possibly even a bit earlier to make sure you are covered
3. bad. no it's not cheap
4. depends what you are looking for. kata is pretty central wrt to night life. you are always about 15-20mins away from the most popular spots where 2+2'ers go to
5. where are you from? you should find the thai embassy in your home country. probably the most easiest way. there are some countries that can get visa on arrival but you are most likely not in one of those countries.

I wouldn't worry about vandalism.

Theft is probably a problem. It's a big problem for motorcycles in every city in the world and I don't see why Thailand would be any different.

Are you loaded with money? Shipping is pretty expensive. My guess is that it will be $1000+ one way. They will slap import duties on your bike that will be VERY expensive. At that point, you will have the bike there but can't legally ride it as far as I know until you register it and insure it - both of those things are hard to do on a tourist visa.

They do have real big bikes for rent. Depends what you want. I rented Kawasaki Er6 for 1000 baht/day and it is an OK bike. If you want real sportbike or expensive cruiser it will be substantially more expensive though...

Every time you mention Kuala Lumpur you don't just say lunch you make it clear it is lunch at Mcdonalds. Is there a hot girl at the counter there or something?

Gonorrhea is probably the big one. Don't know if there are shots for that.

Phuket is not exactly the jungle. Tropical diseases are not that common.

What many travellers do experience though is bali belly aka e. coli bacterial infection from drinking untreated water and eating food prepared in unhygeinic conditions. There's not really anything you can do to avoid it, and the best treatment is to stay off alcohol and drink a lot of water for the next few days. Also, take toilet paper with you wherever you go.
