I think that TrueMove has the best 3G coverage of the Thai carriers, and they have a good deal where it's 599baht/mth for unlimited internet. Apparently tethering works a treat as well.

PSA regarding overstaying in Thailand

If you get the the airport it is dealt with by immigration officials and it's a simple 500baht/day fine capped at 20k. However if for any reason the normal Thai police pick you up beforehand and inspect your passport, it's dealt with as a serious offence and you are more often than not immediately thrown into a Thai prison; it can take several days for the beauracratic crap to get sorted until you're free. Obviously the odds of getting pulled up by police are low but just letting you all know that this small risk is there.

I've overstayed a couple of times. Doesn't really matter and you won't be thrown in Thai jail for it unless you are doing something seriously wrong.

my last overstay i didn't even get fined at the airport, they just gave me some stamp and waived me on through. i assume the stamp is to make sure they know not to let me off light next time.

WRONG. You've been lucky. Read the links.

If you get to the airport it's all gravy. BUT if you get pulled up by a police officer while not at the airport and they ask to see your passport, you WILL be thrown in jail. Just letting you guys know. Then it's just a wait until you pay the fine etc. but it can take days and god knows a thai jail is the last place I'd want to be for any period of time.

Hi FoldEqu1ty,
I was wondering whether you could give me a little more info on this sort of thing. I will be in thailand from the end of feb for a few months and will be playing online poker for income while there and need a good connection in phuket and/or samui. Is this internet generally reliable to play online with? I looked on the truemove website and its all in thai which i cant read. I see a lot of sites charging $25 USD for 1mb of data in thailand, so hopefully this one is different!

Also, is anyone using the G1 google phone in thailand using thai carrier sim cards???

You should check the "enter before" date on your visa though. you have to use the 2nd entry one day before this date or your visa will be expired.

I do my border runs with airasia to kuala lumpur usually. they fly there from phuket and bangkok several times a day so doing the whole thing in under 12 hrs is easy.

let me know if you need more help with any of this

everyone uses prepaid sim cards. you can buy them everywhere (7-11's, family marts etc..) you don't need passport. you can also buy credit to the sim card from the same places.

i don't know what netword is best. I've been using 1-2-call for both calling and for internet and it's good enough for me. there are couple of more major networks but i couldn't tell if changing to one of those would make a difference
Hey lessu,
If I am planning to stay in thailand for over 3 months, how and where do I go about getting a visa? I am American just fyi. thanks man!

So I just showed up in Bangkok a couple hours ago, never even been to Asia before and I don't speak or read a single word of Thai, as a bonus China Air lost my bag so I only have the clothes on my back atm. I plan on staying for at least a couple months. Any vets wanna do me a huge favor and show me around a lil or just list some good spots. I'd be happy to take you out for dinner/drinks for your trouble.

Things I'm really interested in finding are:

-Good place to go clothes shopping.
-Decently priced apartment in a cool/busy part of town.
-Someone/where I can learn some basic Thai from.
-Good quality authentic food/restaurants, Thai or otherwise.
-Weightlifting Gym/Muay Thai
-Golfing
-Good nightclubs/Bars with pool players.

Any advice/wisdom is much appreciated.

thank you!

this would be for me alone, which seems most likey atm.

price: up to $450, the less the better obv
location: kata, karon, rawai from the sticky? def not patong
pool: would be nice but not too important
beachy: yes please at least reasonably close
dates: you mean of arrival? after feb 15th and before march 5th
length of stay: 3 months at least, could do 6m min also if had to,
might want to move to indonesia later tho depending on how I like it..

-walking distance to eating places/malls would be a big +
-dont wanna get robbed, living alone, so not in the ghetto iykwim
-obv I need reliable internet, havnt figured out yet if dsl or those aircards are the way to go..
-roof terrace where I could grind in privacy but still open air also big +
-I only need one bedroom but would also take a two br object
if it fits into the other criteria (price) nicely
(not many 1 br places online)

is the above reasonable? I mean I could, but I really dont want to spend more
than I do here in Germany..

Ballerblockn: get a 2x entry tourist visa from a thai embassy in america, and you'll be happy you did. otherwise you're going to Vientienne, Laos 30 days after you get here.

Subandi: that "walking distance to food" thing makes it sound like you don't plan on getting a motorbike, which if that's the case, there is a chance Phuket isn't for you. it will certainly affect where you want to stay, so you should make that clear to NTB before he can help you.

Any thoughts on this place: http://www.siamrealestate.com/detail...ode/LTRIL3138/

Has anyone dealt with Siam Real Estate in the past? Any feedback will be appreciated.

Thanks!

get a tourist visa from america like rutang said. I'd get as many entries as you can. 3 is usually the max. just in case you decide to stay longer. as each entry is worth 90 days a triple entry would be worth almost 9 months of stay when the use is optimized.

yeah, you are pretty much never a walking distance of anything in phuket if you dont stay basically on the beach roads of patong/kata/karon and obv you dont want to stay there.

even if you were not planning on getting a motorbike you'll get one after couple of weeks max. it's just one of those things you need in phuket

The area is fine.
The price seems pretty good for a 2BR.

Siam Real Estate is run by an English Gy and his son.
We have interacted with them a little bit. They generally have a wide range of decent property listings.

They, like all other real estate firms are adding AT LEAST 10% onto the rental cost.

price might seem a little bit too good. i'd want to see that place just to see what is wrong with it for it to be able to be for rent at that site for 12k a month

Need a bit of advice.. I've been here almost 4 months now, but yesterday when I tried to make a deposit on Fulltilt I got this message that there is no secure connection available? I emailed support and went through the process of changing my default browser, etc. as they suggested but still getting error.

The next step is to send my IP address, and before I do..My questions; Will they ban me from playing once known in Thailand? Has anyone else had this issue recently? I made a deposit from this IP a few weeks back, not sure what's up?

Any thoughts?
I tried from my DTAC/12call phone modem and got same error.

Long ago I just went ahead and changed my FT address to Thailand.

I sometimes get that "no secure connection" thing when xfring but usually I just have to try again several times and it works.

FT prob aren't going to ban you if I am allowed to have an account with a Thai Address.

I had some similar thoughts. From pix it looks new. My best guess is the exact loction may not be great, like on a busy shortcut soi/road or something else like right next door to a gravel delivery company with lots of noise or something.

best way to start learning Thai when I'm back in the US(leaving in a few hrs), assuming I can't find a tutor? What if the only tutor I can find is a non-native speaker? still fine?

I've heard mixed results in general about rosetta stone, not familiar with any of the other big language learning programs.

Oh and it would probably only be for 2 months since odds are I'm moving here in April.

For the guys living in chiang mai -

How much are you paying for houses there? What about 1 or 2 bedroom units/apartments?

Are there any good websites to look at houses?

thanks

Start with Pimsleurs Thai + Benjawan Poomsan Becker's 'Thai for beginners' work book and audio.

This site has been the nizzles for me also. The Thai-English dictionary function is great

under "Permissible" category "cooking" is marked as a no go. While this could be a mistake (they made a mistake like that on a house I looked at), it is a bit suspicious when the pictures show no kitchen either. It is possible their idea of a "western kitchen" means the lone fridge in the corner next to the TV on picture 5.........

it's probably just a connection problem or something. i had that happen couple of times and i just tried again and it worked.

also ftp knows you play from thailand already so if they cared they would've done something already. like ntb said he has used his thai address there and it's np.
