****. I just assumed there would be Vietnamese food everywhere. I've tried some rice noodle and beef thai soups, they just aren't the same. I suppose I can fly out to Saigon for visa changes.

EZ, just change tha language of your keyboard, in XP you might have a blue EN box at the bottom right, if you have that click it and change ti to TH.

Else:
-go into control panel
- regional and language options
- then the languages tab
- click details
- click add and choose thai

If it's not in the list, you should go to the languages tab again, and check the checkbox "install files for complex script...."

Hope this works..

kind of a noob on visa runs, i heard ppl saying before that if you leave and reenter thailand by land then you only get 15 days in the country or something like that, does this still apply if i already have 2 entries left on my tourist visa? So basically do i have to fly to get the 2 months
Ask us about Thailand! Quote
01-09-2010 , 10:37 AM
you get 15 days if you dont have a visa

it doesnt matter if you land from spaceship to thailand if you have tourist visa you will get 60 days

There are still lots of Vietnamese places in Thailand for Pho and all the other standard fare. If you are in BKK you can order delivery from Sweet Basil, via Chefsxp. From there I recommend the Hanoi Marbles - Nam Nuong. If you are Paragon there is a place called Pho on the food floor which is ok and reasonably priced. Just look around a bit more and you'll be surprised at how many places there are. But a visa run to Saigon would def work too. The food there is fantastic and super cheap. Plus two liter jugs of beer (bia hoi) for 42 cents isn't bad either (and hot Viet womenz, cool war museums, and general insanity)

Yes some of us have. I tend to prefer Issan peoples , in general to the fake hiso BKK types.

I'm currently in Udon Thani and enjoying it.. prices are so cheap.. 10baht for a thai coffee, 30-50baht for a thai meal..

I spent the new years with my GF in her home near Nong Khai, and went and got my Visa extension yesterday at the UT immigration office.. a breeze. Not many other young falangs here..but if your running with friends or need a change of pace from Phuket/Bangkok/Chiang Mai.. I recommend to stop over here..
Basiclly, if you get out of BKK or Phuket prices drop almost everywhere in Thailand.

Nong Khai seemed really cool. Stayed there 1 night several times.

Quote:
I know a lot of people use the Thai Embassy in Laos these days for Visas, and recommend UT for a few days. I'm staying near the bus station, as I took the bus up here.. I'm a nit lately..trying to find the cheapest ways in LOS (land of smiles for you noobs). I've spent the last 2 1/2 months in Phuket, and it's a nice break to be out of there..so many non-Thais and prices are high right now. Bangkok for a few days this weekend on my travels back south, but thought I'd mention a place I've not seen much feedback on.
Yep Nong Khai is cool.

Quote:
I'd also say I've been using a DTAC pay as you go service on an Nokia E72 for a modem..and no problem wherever I stay for modem access...

I did stay in a barn, and **** in a squat toilet for 5 days (with no TP) during New Years. But 400 baht bought the whole party beer, and we had a good time singing Karaoke, etc.. I was at my GF's "mama's" house. But was fed well, and rent was free..( I kickbacked some baht for the good nature of it). And saw some 'real' Thailand for a change.
Yep did the squat shtter multiple times. But, compared to conditions in the field in the military, didn't phase me.

Quote:
I'd also like to comment to all the 'playas' who like playing mental games with the bar girls.. get off your computers for a week and see where they come from, and how they live. It was a welcome change to the norm in Phuket, etc.. But I do miss the great beaches and daily swims in the oceans..
Yes, attitudes of the "I have hiso Thai friends who hae Hiso families" can get quite boring.

The beaches/mountains are what kept me in Phuket for years now.

Quote:
BTW..there are casinos rumored in the works in the North area
I can't say it any more clearly than to STAY THE **** AWAY FROM ANY LAO/CAMBODIA/THAI CASINOS UP THERE.

Best luck to all in 2010!! Let's keep the poker players in Thailand connected and welcome all the noobs to the LOS in the best way possible.

Yeah that place is insane. They have an elephant camp there and you stay in superballer 'tents'. Last I heard it was $2k/night though.

Hi,
so I'm planning on coming out at the end of the month will be looking to rent an apartment for at least 6 months to a year.

I want to know which areas I should be looking at where are most of the 2+2s at?

When you guys came out how did you do it book a hotel for a few nights and just explore in them few days looking for a place to rent?

I have about 6 months living expenses saved up and also grind online for future monies so need a place with good internet.

Will bring my laptop is it easy to buy a new monitor over there?

Can answer for BKK.

The main areas 2+2ers stay are Sukhumvit (Asoke/Phrom Phong/Thong Lor/Ekkamai) and Silom. Ratchada is another area 2+2ers stay which is a bit cheaper but a bit further from the 'main' attractions/nightlife.

You can look online for ideas, but best to stay in a hotel for a week and get an agent to help you look when you arrive. www.thaiapartment.com and www.bkkcondos.com are two good websites. Alot of places only accept 12 months rent, some will accept 6 months usually serviced apartments, most require 2 months deposit upfront and 1st months rent.

Internet is usually best when you install it yourself, true our what I'm using and would reccommend, rarely disconnects and achieves 8mb download speeds. It's ~1.2k baht a month. Think it takes 2-3 days to install.

24" monitors are easy to buy in BKK, sell for around 10k baht in stores like Siam Paragon/Emporium.

Bangkok&Phuket. They are completely different kind of places so you have to see both to know which one you want to live in.

not as easy as in western world but still doable. depends how big you want. you can get under 24" easily anywhere. atm if you want 24-26" in phuket you have to order it from bangkok (store can do this for you). havent seen one live for a while. from bangkok you have better choice

Thanks for the quick feedback.

I'm not really looking for a place where the nightlife is crucual. I'm 22 from UK so been going clubbing for 4 years now and theres days I much prefer just drinking in a pub/bar.

What I want to get out of this is just to get away from life in Uk (London) looking to grind online 5 days a week, while living near a beach and hopefully meet some other poker players who play online.
