two quick questions:

which place do you recommend to stay for a single traveller (near Khao San Road)? I want to have a/c, clean room, comfortable bed and don't want to pay more than ~ 700 baht/night.

second, what do you recommend to do on new year's eve? bed supper club? or staying on khao san road?

i would reconsider your vacation plans if you value your safety, thailand is the 8th most dangerous country in the world (for americans).

no but i might be hesitant to go to a country where i'm 4x more unlikely to die from unnatural causes than i would be in mexico, where druglords basically have more power than the gov't and murder is prevalent.

Are you implying that reading an article about the top 12 most dangerous countries for American's to visit doesn't instantly make you an expert on the subject?

Sounds like a very bad article. You will end up in jail if you stick it in a 12 year old boy's bum. And if a lot of Americans go to Thailand to do that rather than Mali than it's normal Thailand tosses more people in jail.

Stop sticking it into 12 year olds! 14 is the minimum

well, what is a safe country to stick it a bums of any age

ThailandFreak video guy seems to be having a great time, so it's hard to knock him, but most of his girlfriends look like hoodrats lol, either that or they're not photogenic.

I think the globalnanpa guy has better taste, hanging out at Bangkok's G Club's

Speaking of G Club, what are the best one's? Bank, Forte, Caribbean?? And what is the best approach, to buy membership, or just pay whenever you go?

Getting shot or locked up is a more rare way to die. There are a few tourist murders every year as well. 2 years ago a british backpacker was raped and murdered and found washed up on Lamai beach.

Thailand is notorious for lack of safety considerations - try

* going on a chartered bus and watch how they drive, http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/7662654.stm
* take the boat to Ko Pagn Ngan and watch them load 55 people into a speedboat that sits 12, http://www.scandasia.com/viewNews.php?news_id=1316
* lean on the balcony rail of your top-floor apartment and see how safe that is

But in all honesty motorcycles are by far the biggest killer. You have to be careful riding a bike here, most tourists don't wear helmets and ride while drunk which is a recipe for disaster when you consider that most of them have never ridden a bike before they came to thailand, and that the majority of other drivers on the road are maniacs.

Basically if you are thinking of coming to Thailand as a tourist you should definitely think about safety:

* Airplanes are by far the safest mode of travel. If you can fly somewhere you should. It's also much faster
* Don't ride a motorcycle unless you really have to
* Be extremely careful when walking on or near a road, as motorists couldn't really care less if they run you down - especially during Songkran when many drivers are completely wasted and the roads are wet.
* When on a boat, wear a lifejacket.
* Don't expect things to be built to meet minimum safety standards as they are in the west.

That article is moronic. North Korea is probably the safest place for Americans to travel. There's only a very limited number of places you can go and you have to be accompanied by a "driver" and two guides at all times. I can't imagine any way to get injured unless war breaks out. There's almost no traffic, for example.

"8. Thailand. Based on government statistics, the odds of an American dying on a visit to Thailand from other than natural causes are about one in 21,000. That’s about four times worse than Mexico. Thailand also has a fairly high crime rate and likes to toss people in prison."

That's pretty broad reasoning. I'd guess most people that die/jail in Thailand have something to do with drugs. I can't seem to find a single area in Chiang Mai that is dangerous to be in.

Most people don't die in Chiang Mai obv. The majority of tourist deaths are related to watersports (especially SCUBA diving) and traffic accidents.
