They have one of those joints just near where I live in Samui

Chiang Mai Nightlife's great. Just because their aren't as many bars/night clubs as Phuket that doesn't mean that it is worse. With 3+ universities in Chiang mai the amount of young people going out here makes it pretty good. I'm much preferring it than hanging out in Hollywood with teh falang sex tourists.

It's basically a lot like Phuket Town but 20x bigger and also the choice of a few western places to hang out.

It's got nothing on BKK though :/

edit: omg omg omg omg hot girls everywhere - That's what I actually wanted to say about the nightlife here

re: living expenses... i think US$1k/month is a good benchmark. i agree $500 is wayyyy too low, especially since ur living in thailand and not working all damn day, meaning you'll want to do things that cost money. you can probly get by for $500 but it may suck. with $1k/month, i'd feel pretty comfortable with my situation. (i'm speaking about northern thailand here, i don't have enough experience anywhere else to know how much costs differ)

i dunno, i'm not a huge bangkok fan but i do think its cool living in a huge city with skyscrapers and ****. it's also not like ur strapped down at all so you're in a great position to do additional travel and just have bkk as your home base.

i think bkk has more "sexy" nightlife venues by far. the standard nightlife spots in chiang mai sorta suck imo. that said, the university hangouts are A+, obviously.

edit: myironthumb, how's ur internet in CM?

I've just moved into a new house and it already had a standard TT&T 450 Baht p/month internet connection which was way too slow. Grinding was ok but download speeds were virtually non existent. Luckily I've got a CAT aircard which is working awesome. I can Download at a reasonable speed and I've only had one D/C whilst grinding in 2 weeks. I definitely recommend one of those to anyone who is thinking of getting one.

I'm going to get the house internet upgraded as well soon so I will see how that goes, I've heard the standard is very similar to Phuket.

Oh yeh and the uni hang out places here ship . Any recommendations? I'm still pretty new here

So I guess Bangkok is ok if your primary reason for going to Thailand is for hitting up nightclubs and trying to hang with celebrities.
actually in bkk, we are the ones who are rock and movie stars

You have to be careful with recommending this, as not everywhere has access to EV-DO, and your experience in Chiang Mai might be completely different than if you tried using it everywhere else.

From what I can gather the CAT aircards work fine in CM, Isaan, some parts of Phuket and Pattaya, they don't work at all in Bangkok and only get regular CDMA speeds in Samui.

So your mileage may vary, pays to check with other people in the same area who are using EV-DO first.

ok when Im down there I want to play on a 30" via a laptop.

would it be advisable to buy the screen here and take it with me when I move there
(or let it be shipped after me) or would it be better to buy it (online?) when Im there?

I have seen the workers at the ports and they are not too carefull with the freight...

I would definitely buy the screen here, shipping would cost a lot and taking it with you, it's like ship and pray.

three choices imo

1) bring it with you - this is what i did, i got a very large suitcase and detached the screen from the stand, packed it pretty snuggly. screen + stand weighed about 15kg which is ALOT of your overall luggage allowance. 5-10% chance you get stopped at customs, probably less than that even.

2) ship it with courier such as DHL - will cost you alot and you are 80% gonna get hammered on taxes as you have to declare the value of the item. Theyre definitely gonna rip it open since it costs so much.

3) buy it here - in 14 months in thailand im still yet to see or even hear about 30's being available in the country. i'd imagine you could go to one of the big samsung shops in bangkok and get one ordered in but that will take a while and will undoubtedly be very expensive. a 27" samsung which is only 1920x1200 costs 42k in those places.

FWIW Thai customs pretty much make up how much they want to charge, when i brought my ps3 from HK the guy said i had to pay 10k but then he gave me a genorous discount and i only had to pay 4k :/

I have seen the 30" Samsung with 2560x1600 res for 55k baht at Panthip Plaza
It had quite a bit of dust on it so they don't seem to sell that many and the price might be negotiable...
