Generally any kind of driver's license from any country will do. You just have to have the physical card with you at the time.

Motos are a cheap way to get around but they are also frickin dangerous since Thais simply do not care if they hit you (its always your fault if they do). And when you do get hit it will cost you, even if you manage to avoid injury.

When you've been here a while you know when and where the police check for license, so you don't need one. I've been here for 1,5 years without a licence. It's probably only cost me 4500 baht in fines to find out when/where they patrol. I'll sell the information for half that

Thanks everyone for the info about bikes. Anybody ever made bike trips with em?

Re internet, is it good? Most connections blow in Asia, especially Thailand. Tried playing in Koh Samui once and was folding out small blinds. How hard/expensive is it to find a building with the best internet options ... and even with the best, can you get a good stable connection to say, FTP?

P.S. Mostly talkin about big cities ... Phuket etc

There are some good telecom companies and some bad ones. I have been able to find a good solid connection everywhere but it took some hunting around.

Most people use TOT for internet which is awful. A few internet cafes obviously use a different provider because they have fast, reliable connections. The hard part is finding a place that has a connection with one of the better companies.

Im looking for the same thing to be honest, but I think the only way to do it is when are on the ground in Thailand and can check it out yourself.

Not really, but don't get your hopes up for a first world connection on not very developed SE asian islands (aside from tourism) unless you're willing to fork out major cash for a sat internet connection.

Got TRUE in BKK which doesn't have the greatest peering outside of SEA (which reduces speeds), but no connection drops and 100kb/s average is enough for me.

if you stay in phuket just a get a place with telephone line makes sure it is TT&T that provides internet there. We had 2/1M adsl from them in karon for 6 months for 1090 baht a month and we didnt have any problems. more problems with electricity with that house but UPS solved those.

now i have the same connection in rawai and no problems. and i have cdma as backup if adsl decides to die

Those are different towns/beaches in Phuket. Its quite a big island.
