You can grind online anywhere in Costa Rica. Playa samara - the town- has a higher crime problem than other areas. Not a big bad one...just a lot of stoner/loser type 20-35 year old dudes riding bikes around town looking for crimes of opportunity....and if you are a gringo....you Are a crime of opportunity!!!!
I would pick another place/beach to live.
But you can grind anywhere and check out these places for yourself. CR is not that big! I would avoid Caribbean side too.
San Jose and Jaco beach have only live poker games. There are no othe towns with live games I know of.
There are plenty of airbnb or vrbo for cheap. Lots. Just use the search function on google...
The beaches are really hot most of the year and San Jose's is at 3800 feet - cool. Many expats prefer a higher elevation overlooking San Jose...it's much cooler.

Are two websites with tons of info on Costa Rica.
Many who like to surf stay at playa Hermosa south of Jaco 20 minutes. Great waves. Plus you are only 2 hours from SJO. Jaco is not wonderful fun beach town. It is the only beach town in Costa Rica where hundreds of chicas from all over central America come to screw rich gringos. Again, lots of seedy people around looking for crimes of opportunity. I would never take my family to Jaco.
During the day it's fine.
The Marriott Life s Suenos is a resort 12 more notes from Jaco and it's where rich Costa Rican's come for weekend.
Manual Antonia is an hour down the road and a fabulous tourist beach town. Awesome hotels when the infinity views.
There are hostels and rooms for as low as $20 a night for gringos in Jaco.
Again, take a week and check out a few different areas and see which is best for your long stay.
Good Luck.
