These men were older. Definitely older than 30, most probably in their 40's. Aside from the BBQ guy, there was nobody else in the area but me and the other 8 guys at the table.
Should have figured them for something shady, but eh lesson learned.
Thing is that there are many foreigners who are in China illegally and you can get in trouble if you are unable to provide a passport or foreign expert certificate upon request by the police. It's just a way to shake people down for a small bit of cash. After all, they can't book you if you don't have ID. If I was carrying only a little cash on me, I'd probably give him something small and just go since I'm not a particularly fast runner and there's no way I could fight off 8 cops at the same time. But I had quite a lot of cash spread about me after a poker game and I'd lose it all if he caught a piece of it. So, my adrenaline really got pumping and I booked.
Not a whole lot of people are dumb enough put themselves in a situation like this. So, I have never heard of this happening without any other reason behind it such as committing a crime or starting a fight.

People in this thread may not know the answer to this but is there a 6 month passport requirement to get into South Korea? I planning a trip to leave on Dec 18 - Jan 2. My passport expires in Apr 2013. I thought this would be fine but then I heard that some countries require 6 months validity. Googling has not given me an official answer. I still have time to expedite a renewal application, but I would rather not pay the rush fees.
you can find like a dorm room/prison cell (goshiwon) for around that much. i doubt you can in seoul. think they are 3-600k won a month in seoul.
street food is cheap but you can't eat it constantly like in thailand. when i would go to the mom and pop fast food place for lunch and dinner near my job i'd spend like 10$/day on food (gogee mandu ftw). but i'm the kind of person who doesn't mind/enjoys eating the same thing everyday.

I know I needed 6 months validity for my work visa to ROK.
hey guys i helped a few people out in this thread earlier. i hit my moneybookers limits so I'm looking to swap some Stars for some Won if you want to play Pokerstars and haven't set up your online e-wallets or anything.
have a lot of references and am very trustworthy. would exchange at XE rates.
Try Caribbean Bay, in Yong-In. It's the biggest water park in Korea. All of the outdoor stuff is closed in the winter but there is still a pretty fun indoor part. I was there about 7 years ago but I doubt much has changed. The inside had a couple of big water slides, tube ride, diving pool, floating river plus a whole of hot pools with various scented water etc.
Haven't been in Korea for couple months, but I know walker hill would occasionally get PLO running. Usually on weekends but you prob gave to ask to get interest going
Guy said PLO will run occasionally if seven or eight people want to play them, he's not going to open them for just two or three people and they haven't run in a while.
Where would you suggest living? Also, do you know what FTP requires to unlock account once relocating? Would my US. Id work with utility bill and a bank account in korea?
did you play hu on ub?
Currently staying in the Phillipines, looking to move here. Is it legal to play Pokerstars here/ other sites here, as of recent? Is it possible to internet disconnect in Seoul? Thanks.
I play Stars no problem but I use my Australian bank account. Korean internet is the best in the world. I pay $20 a month for the worst internet company (of the big 3) and here's my speed.

It's a gray area at best. Korean citizens can't gamble but we aren't Korean and we can visit the casinos so ??. Internet is blazing fast and cheap. Koreans are addicted to it. Even where I live the buses have free Wifi.
Pokerstars and FTP work fine as does moneybookers. Netteller doesn't work here as far as I know. I would set up an account with KEB since they are pretty cool with cashing out to moneybookers.
