i say this all the time to my friends who go to korea but there really is no substitute for making friends with korean dudes. they'll get you into so many places you'd never consider. you'll meet women you'd never meet. you'll experience culture you wouldn't.

and seriously, just develop some thick skin. yeah you'll get stares, some offhand comments, the occasional shout in your direction... who cares? the good things outweigh the bad by far if your self worth isn't completely tied to how every other person in the world perceives you at all times.

sick beat having a girl whose parents weren't cool with marriage. having said that, i've seen the other side of that many, many times including twice myself (lol egageaments.) my second korean gf's mother was angling soooo hard to become my MIL. and that's not rare in my experience. korean mothers-in-law are the nuts. they spend and spend and love without mercy. unreal.

i'm drunk and rambling. i'll be sure and post about my happy times when i get back to the morning calm.
I would advice some caution since I've heard a few stories of young Korean men taking foreigners out and leaving them to foot huge bills. Not a common thing but generally people thing foreign teachers are rich so you can get scammed. Some younger guys tend not to have any money so they use us to foot the bill.
On the other hand, I have had older men take me out for some of the best times on the town.

Korea is pretty safe in some areas but it still has it's issues. Cheers.

Check this out!
If your not plugged into Korean expat people it's easy to miss this little gem. Korean isn't perfect and it's as safe as you think.

It's about Korean people being crazy while drinking.

People do stupid things when drunk regardless of your country of origin. It doesn't make it right, but it's unfair to single out one nationality for this.

To be honest, I think the expats there have a bigger drinking problem than the locals.

I agree. I was just pointing out to be careful while drinking since in Korea a foreigner doesn't have the benefit of the doubt like locals. If foreigners did that kind of stuff we would have much bigger fine than what Koreans get.
I"m sure this is the case in most countries. I linked the article the vid came from.
As far as the drinking, I'm not sure but most foreigners don't drink as much as korean people. My old roommate drink 4-5 nights a week. He came home blackout drunk at least once. Drink is pretty huge part of the culture here.

I'm considering moving to South Korea at the end of this year and would like to play on Pokerstars if possible while I'm there. How are deposits/withdrawals, specifically with Pokerstars?

Tried depositing with a Korean VISA once and didn't work.
Not sure about withdrawals (LOL profit).

What type of visa you on? If you have a E2 visa for teaching you can't earn extra income so getting money off is really hard. They will report any transaction that isn't from your school.

I have no idea about working in Korea or playing on stars here, but the moneybookers/skrill mastercard works everywhere (except a few Atm's)
Could be a good idea to "hide" your winnings.

If you have to get it set up with your bank they will ask tons of questions about it. It was a pain just to confirm my account with them to play on PS. Stars works and is fine.

No you don't have to, it's an online account that is linked to that mastercard.

I linked my money bookers account to my bank (KEB) and it's like 2005 all over again. Cashouts from stars hit my bank in 1 business day.

I can't speak for deposits, however.

On the skrill website I can't find any info about this card - what is it?

Foreign men spread HIV, get girls pregnant and steal their money. There is an ever growing increase of the number of foreigners in Korea and something must be done to stop it !

I am on my phone now so it's hard to provide you links, but typing "skrill mastercard" on google should be enough. It cost about $10-15/year but you get it for free if you are a VIP member there. Overall fees are pretty low. Will give you more details in ~a week if you want.

So shocking to see the media lambasting foreigners. I mean that's never happened before!

It's apparent that foreigners offer girls something aside from bigger dicks.

I mean that clip wasn't even that bad. It definitely had sensationalism trying to create some panic but there wasn't a single racist/negative thing said about foreigners. A lot of it was hearsay though so pretty shoddy journalism.

Let's be real though. U.S. television has a golf commentator saying Tiger Woods should be lynched on live television as a "joke". har har. We can cherry pick stuff from every nation. This report wasn't even racist, it was just sensationalistic.

This thread definitely took a turn for the worse when all the loser teachers who couldn't find jobs in America and had to come to Korea decided to bleed their bitterness on 2+2. Compare page one (beautiful food, club recs, helping each other) to page fifteen, it's kind of pathetic. I have like 60 total friends who were teachers and all of them had a decent time. The ones who didn't love it just left quietly after a year.

Koreans in general are very proud, quite racist, and tough to mix in with. I can say that about a lot of countries. Others (Australia, Canada in my experience) are very warm and welcoming. That doesn't mean it's right for this recent crop (outside of 2+2) of otherwise unemployed English teachers to come out here and whine about what they're entitled to or assault old Korean people on the bus.

I am Korean-American myself and even I have been flamed by grumpy shopkeepers for speaking fluent English (they thought I was putting on airs or whatever). One time I was talking about how different America was and two old Korean guys just started cussing at me in a park, lol. I also got mugged with my girlfriend in Paris. I'm not going to go to the France travel thread and derail the thread constantly though.

You are racial bias since you are Korean-American. You fit in with the general population here so you don't experience what others do.

Also, maybe your "60" other friends didn't want to tell you their dislikes of stuff in Korea since they know you act like a 5 year old bitch when anyone says anything bad about PERFECT KOREA.

So now you have called me a drug using, whore ****ing and a loser.
That's so becoming of a Dueces Cracked coach. Well played sir.

Granted MSNBC has had some problems losing journalists so they might have run this to get attention.

If that peice had run but was angled towards Koreans there would be death threats to the person who ran it/CEO. Just saying.

You can call me racially biased (not really but whatever) but you are actually racist so you win that competition. Unlike you I'm living here and in Japan because of poker but would prefer the USA.

You can call me a 5 year old bitch but you're the one who is crying constantly in these forums and starting threads in the DC forum as well. Every post you make in this thread is some form of passive aggressive racism or whining.

I actually have a lot of problems with Korea and would be happy to provide a list. But #1 on the list is crybaby teachers like you who can't get a job outside of teaching English. I think you should just leave the country and the thread (in no particular order) but that's just my opinion.

I actually did some Googling on signs you might be a racist and I think this pretty much sums you up in this thread..

1. Temporal Tampering
2. Isolating and Enlarging Minor Events
3. Creating Illusions
4. Using Pejoratives to refer to Africans
5. Omitting Information that would Modify Structure

Someone should try and save this thread with a positive topic change cause this argument will never end because no one will "win".

Anyone have good stories about poker in korea they would like to share?

I was playing blackjack in Walker Hill and downing double whiskey/cokes like crazy. I wasn't betting like a madman or anything. Only bought in for 400,000W at 20,000W/hand. I ran it up to something like 650,000W when I got asked to leave. I don't recall doing anything wrong or offensive. They just wanted me to leave. With little thought, I got up and walked to the cashier to cash in my chips. Then, I went home.

I woke up the next day and tried to get my money, but I couldn't find it. I scrounged around but found none of the cash. After calling the casino, I concluded that I left all the cash on the table and just did an end around in front of the cashier rather than walking straight out the door.

Not 5 minutes after that, I got a call from my mother telling me that my dad died.

On my bday a few months back I went out to walker and got whacked at poker and was down to around 150. Decided to degen it at bj doing 50 a hand. Ran it up to 1500 in about 30 min. Decided to do 500 hand and if I won to leave. What else do I get but AA and have to split. Lose them both naturally. Tilt my last 500 in one hand and hit 3 blackjacks in a row and left.
