Cheers kdragon, much appreciated. I was reading somewhere that walker hill was a bit away from the main happening areas of Seoul. Seeing as I don't need to stay in that area until the night before the tournament would you still recommend me to stay there?

Anyway see you there
Cheers 1aday, see you there and if not good luck in the event.

In regards to these love motels I'm guessing I don't need to pre-book. Is there any website for them?

Yea, I second the advice of staying at a love motel. They're generally kept really clean and you can find good prices.

Definitely not what I'd think of a "love motel" back in the States

Oddly enough a love motel will usually actually be better than a hotel. A love motel is where the majority of younger Koreans go to **** their gf (this is due to high levels of Confucianism). A hotel is aimed at the hajimas and ajoshies who still hold on to the old ideals, korea is changing obv but the Confucian ideals are still dominant in the majority. Love motels usually have a great bathroom with akin to a jacuzzi, nice big HDTV and a great big bed as standard. This is not standard in a hotel but a hotel will cost at least double the price just because of the concept of what it is. Anyway look out for a brit a kiwi and a gyopo @ the APPT from Daejeon that will be us! \\\\\\\\\so yeah love motel ftw. Usually are avail just walking in and not a 'pre-book' kind of gig. Peace

dont have to pre book love motels. only thing i would warn you about is the porn on the television sets in those rooms is probably the worst on the planet. unless you are grinding cash dont stay near walker hill before the tournament. depending on your age i would say hongdae first and itaewon second. just to give you things to do. both of those places actually suck because of the deluge of foreigners but for newbs and people not trying to get past superficial korea they can be easy ways to have fun.

both of those places are great what are you talking about?

Hongdae is a club haven, if you're not into that, they also have a lot of bars. It's also an art student district.

Itaewon is great for getting foreign food. Also, I like the bar B1 over there. it's got a good vibe to it.

Cheers 1aday for the info. Unusual group mixture. I'm sure I'll notice ye . Which one are you btw?

Thanks kd and syous - I'm sure I'll play some cash games, but it's more a case as and when I feel like it, so don't have to be near Walker Hill.

At 40 I'm a geriatric for an online poker player I realise . Anyway purely coz of my age I won't be looking to stay in the studenty type areas though I imagine I'll check out Hongdae at least one night. So from what I've read so far Itaewon sounds like the better option for me?

Music wise my taste is contemporary enough. I like Hip Hop, Techno and Jazz for when I want to chill out somewhere.

I like trying out different types of food - so Itaewon sounds good for this too - of course will be aiming to have mostly Korean food.

I would just try to live in gangnam or apgujeong if u have the money. Once in a Blue Moon is a really great jazz bar, but expensive (BEER IS $20!)

I'm only looking for place for a couple of days before I stay in Sheraton (part of Pokerstars package). I'm most definitely not rich, I don't mind spending a bit extra on stuff if it's really worth it, and I intend to enjoy Seoul even if it costs me a bit but I can't afford to go totally mental either. So my budget is somewhat of a factor at least. Like I'd go to that really cool Jazz bar - but I wouldn't be staying for long at $20 a bottle unless it was the nutz. Anyway will probably have to hook up with some of the other poker players to go checking these sort of places out so it'd depend on where the flo goes...

So can I still stay around Gangnam or apgujeong or is Itaewon my only realistic affordable option?

you can stay anywhere with love motels and get good prices. but he is right that where you can get killed is at certain clubs, bars, or places to eat. since you are 40 id say enjoy itaewon. also just go to walker hill and play cash your first day and meet people new like you or someone willing to take you around. that happens all the time even without big tournaments going.

man if it's your first time I really wouldn't stay in Itaewon. When I travel I prefer to assimilate myself into the culture and Itaewon is foreigners land.

Is Jeju island worth a visit to?

Hmm I wish I had more time there now. Guess I could try out different areas. These love motels sound so reasonably priced I could even fork out for them if it suited me while I was meant to be staying in the Sheraton. Let's face it in just a few days I'd only scratch on the surface of 'assimilating' myself in a 8 day trip, saying that I don't want to avoid seeing the real Seoul but I don't mind having for the first day or so the safety net of a Seoul for beginners that Itaewon sounds like. Choices choices, sounds like it's hard to go wrong whichever of the areas mentioned that I pick.

I need a place to stay in Korea.

22 years old, Canadian-Korean who's stayed in Korea for only 2months of his lifetime.

Need to experience something new, anyone got available apartments? I play 6m 1/2 LHE probably 2hours every 3 months

I just got through this entire thread (mostly, started to skim toward the end) and it was a great read.

I'm planning on going to Korea in a few months with some friends (one friend is fluent) for like 10 days and after reading this thread definitely solidified my intentions.

Also, I'm glad to see Syous is still around posting. You were consistently helpful and insightful.

You ever meet up with Rekrul and play heads up for table service? And if you are still in Korea when I'm around I think we'd have a blast going out drinking.

Hey Syous, how'd you work ur game on the ladies at bars/clubs with the language barrier and all. Seems like it would be a pain in the ass. I'm a Korean Canadian and can speak Korean reasonably well, but not completely fluent.

imo bars/clubs are really hard for koreans. Girls just seem to get scared/embarrassed, if u're a white guy it's a diff. story. Meeting people through friends or doing the um...**** what's that bar called, where u get a room and they pull girls over. It's more efficient and girls are much more open to talking.

I think Korea's the most self-conscious culture I've ever experienced.

never met up w/rekrul. I hope to go in August. I miss korean drinking

I've been here 5 years and most of my Co teachers met their gf/bf on blind dates. Western style picks aren't the norm outside of the bigger cities. Dating non Koreans is frowned on in Jeju island. Seoul is tons more of progressive than the rest of Korea.
