They're expecting at least 60. How realistic that expectation is I couldn't tell you.

dogarse:

so what are the details then? did they actually change it because of you?

I still can go down there and play right now....the reason I didn't was because the stated details were 25 minute blinds and a 10,000 starting stack with presumedly the same kind of huge doubling jumps as usual: 100>200>300>400>500>1000>2000>4000>8000>16000....t hat has been the pattern at every tournement there i've known about or played in...

please, what are the new details?

and to your knowledge, is it even happening?

They sent me a message last night saying that they were going to use my structure but guys from Seoul who play AAPT complained that it was too slow.

New structure was 20 minute levels

level 12 800/1600 (which I guess is where they finished the day but not sure)

Level 15 1500/3000

level 20 5000/10000

level 23 10000/20000

Then they told me that 20 players started and 10 players made day 2 (10bb average stack going into day 2???)

Then they told me that they were going to have a day 1c on Sunday from 2-6 and then start day at 6pm. WTF???

So basically a two day tournament turned into a 1 day turbo. Not sure why anyone would play day 1a or 1b when they could just play a single day on Sunday.

So, I'm skipping it. Really disappointed but at least they told me. I would have been more pissed off if I rocked up at 2pm today and only found out about the changes after driving all the way from Busan.

My guess is they only got 20 on the Friday (and in my opinion 20 runners starting at 2pm on a Friday is a great achievement) and then freaked out that they wouldn't meet their guarantee and totally restructured the tournament to make sure they get the numbers.

Thank you for that information.

Daegu Casino Poker Room is up to it's old tricks.

I was told they had "over 50" signed up and that was a week ago...so I guess they didn't get their numbers, and are trying to just make some money however they can.

That structure is too fast for a sizable tournement..20 minutes?

Why can't the get their head our of their arse down there and just do it right...if they set it up, publicized solid info, and developed a decent reputation, they could get 60 players...they have been open for nearly 5 years now, and it's always stories like this...it's always something.

Anyways thanks for the update, I appreciate it.

Well, 50 doesn't sound unreasonable. If 20 played yesterday then I can see 30 signing up for the saturday.

Anyway, lol at Seoul guys saying the structure was too slow and, also lol at running a "2 day tournament" that consists of 4 hours on day 1 and 5-6 hours on day 2. I was expecting 2 x 10 hour+ days but under their new structure if there are 60 runners and the tourney hits the 12 hour mark there will only be 20bbs total in play.

For the record this was my proposed structure for an 8 hour day 1 and an 8-10 hour day 2 assuming 60 runners, 10K starting stacks and 20 min levels.

Quote:
Day 1
25/50
100
150
200
250
300
350
400
450
500 (10 levels in average stack is 20bbs, some people have busted, some people have chipped up, everyone's had some fun, no one has felt rushed)
600
700
800
900
1000 (15 levels in and average stacks are 10bbs obviosuly people are starting to bust more frequently by this point).
1100
1200
1300
1400
1500 (assuming 30 runners each day we end the day with 200bbs in play, hopefully spread around 10 people or so)

Day2
1600 (early blind increments at 200 so people who come back for day 2 are getting a bit of play for 2 hours then start to speed them up)
1800
2000
2200
2400
2600
3000 (2 hours in and we are back to 200 bbs in play, by this point we should be at the final table or very close, blinds can start to speed up each hour).
3400
3800
4400
5000 (120bbs in play, 4-5 players starting to get pretty short stacked)
5600
6400
7200
8000
9000
10000 (60bbs in play, tourney will be ending at any point from here)
12000 (50bbs)
15000 (40bbs)
20000 (30bbs)
30000 (20bbs)
40000 (15bbs)
50000
60000

I would play in that tournament any day of the week. That is very slow, compared to what they usually do. And I know I have the skill for that kind of tournament....but there is no real skill involved in a crapshoot when it doubles every level after the 6th level.

Well, you tried.

It's important to understand the real reason they have tournements at all, in Daegu. It is simply to get players to come there, so they can make $$$$ off the cash games, and (it is said) to rake the actual tournament itself.

I have actually seen them speed up tournaments towards the end just to "get them over with"....I've sat there looking at my watch and seen it, and so have others.

A 4-hour first day? A 4 hour "day 1-c"? How is that even logical or reasonable? It's so transparent, the whole thing.

Yep... all that being said the new blind structure they showed me is still much better than in the past and if you wanted to go on Sunday and play it as a one day turbo I think it'd still be a pretty fun tournament.

I'm still tempted to go but honestly I don't really like tournaments and it was the combination of playing the tourney Saturday and then a good cash game Saturday night and then day 2 Sunday afternoon and making a fun weekend of it that got me excited.

This is the new structure they sent me. It's fast but it's not crazy fast and there's no ******ed jumps like when they used to go 2.5K/5K - 5K/10K - 10K/20K and your 20bb stack goes to a 5bb stack within 15 minutes, usually on the final table bubble. Yeah, I've been there.

dogarse:

Yes, that is much more reasonable than in the past, for sure. And it is tempting to go tomorrow, but still I don't like 20 minute blinds, and it's a little "rich" for my blood right now (end of the month...)

If they had made a firm commitment to that kind of structure a month ago, I probably would have signed up, saved some money, and went. Why does it have to be decided on the day of the tournement after input from all kinds of 3rd and 4th parties? That "David" character makes claims to have worked in the US in the industry, the owner has been doing this for nearly 5 years (and I believe his original manager JJ worked in Seoul before that and taught him some stuff), and their dealers all went to "dealer academies" (the longest of which are like 18 months!!!!!)......Can't they figure out how to set up this kind of thing? And tell people in advance?

It boggles the mind...anyways, I woulda went with advance notice with that structure you posted.

I will go next time, if they commit to something in advance that is reasonable.

Again thanks for the updates and sharing.

I'm sure the live game tomorrow (after 6pm) will be solid, since by then the tourney should be down to two tables, freeing up two for cash and there will be plenty of people....so maybe you should just go do that. In fact, you might see me there...I might try 100 and just kinda hang out to see all the action and a couple of people that I might know from Seoul and from the original Daegu crowd from 4 years ago, 'n stuff...hmmm

dogarse: you do realize that from Busan via KTX is only 50 minutes and the station (as well as the express bus station) is VERY close to the casino, right? Unless you live in Gijang or something, it might be better than driving.

Well, I just mentioned that information for whomever may find it useful, since this thread is kind of like that tree at Hahoi Village, at this point. It's old, big, and not going anywhere! In fact, the moderator here wouldn't even let me start a new Korean thread...rejected!

So, that's just an addition to the knowledge base. Daegu Casino is quite close to DongDaegu Bus and Train stations. 4000 by taxi.

haha

there is a lot of sketchy **** going on this daegu poker room and i would never play here if i were you

I was there to play the 10k a month ago? and it was a $110 buy in with 3 reentries allowed(said 2 on the website but they said 3 during the tournament) with a addon.

there were like 5 tables to start from 40~50 people and there were A TON of people who have gone broke and re bought in 3 times, at LEAST 6 people from my table plus the add on(most people did add on). so after all that I thought the prize pool would EASILY hit 20k or close to it. but they only gave out 12k lmaooo so who has the rest of the money?

not to mention the bbjp/cash game rake they keep stealing from the players, this room really isnt worth even visiting.

im also suspicious about the relationship between David(the manager) and some of the players. they all seem way too friendly and i wouldnt be shocked if there was chip dumping happening to make the korean americans win the tournaments and share the money later

this poker room is full of **** spread the word out and never go there again

also how did the end up with 16k exact? 16000/300 = 53.33333

so there were 53 people and the third of a man suddenly came to play the tournament? such bull****

There is only one thing worth doing at Daegu...the Sunday 2pm 50000 buyin tournament, which they pay out at 2,000,000 even if only 20 players enter, and I have seen it with only around 22 or so. So they are kind of giving something back during that one, but it is a crapshoot due to the extremely fast structure.

And still, the winners have to play cash for 3 hours, so they are still getting it back.

I sure wish one of the Busan casinos could get an honest and good poker room going. I'm sure they could make some money, and many people would come on the boat from Japan for that too, and Busan has loads of foreigners, and could have all kinds of traffic, for sure. We can hope!!!

are the cash games just as bad as the tournies? How is the rake? Do you know how deep the games usually run? Thinknig of trying my hand at live poker in Daegu while I am around...
Ask A Pro about Living in Seoul, South Korea Quote

The cash games at Daegu have a rake of 10% which (as of recently) is capped at 15,000 (plus 1 or 2 for the bad beat). It used to be uncapped.

The games are only good on Friday night, Saturday evening and night, and Sunday afternoon and night. And they stop at 5 or 6am, regardless of the number of players remaining. I've never seen it go much later than that, which is lame and kind of stupid if you ask me...why turn away business when you have a dozen dealers? But that's the story.

Sometimes there can be 2-3,000,000 in play on the main table total and sometimes it gets up to 3 tables but more usually only 2 for a while, and back to 1 table by 1 or 2am. A lot of players play pretty short stacked, but often rebuy...the people that are buying in for like a million ($1000US basically) are the players to avoid, since they are pros. There are only two or three of those guys, but I advise you to avoid getting mixed up in pots with them....sorry to them if they are reading this!!! LOL But the rest of the players are below-average, a bit crazy, and have little fundamental poker knowledge in my experienced there. If you are cautious and a good player you can probably make money, but sometimes those crazy guys will suck out on you after paying exorbinate prices on ****ty draws and getting lucky...they don't care about things like math, pot odds, etc...if they have a good draw or middle or bottom pair, look out!

Also watch out for the daring, cowboy-style bluffs some of those guys must have learned from watching western movies!! In short, I think it's entertainment for a lot of those guys, so, yes, there is some money to be made, if the donks don't get lucky on you too many times!!
