Yes you should learn to speak Korean first but most don't. I didn't. No, being a white Euro it's not much of a hindrance with most. Some conservatives won't date you because your'e not Korean. Some women will find you desirable because you're not American. All will want to know why and how long you're in Korea. If the answer is "I don't know" or "A few months" that's going to be your biggest issue.

I advise against using the women as a criterion in moving to Korea. They're really no different than women I've known in the states when it comes to attainability. If you can approach a woman confidently where you're from it shouldn't be much of an issue here. I probably sound like an old man but I feel like Korea has gotten a lot more liberal about dating since I first came here ~8 years ago.

Easiest way to meet women is just talking to them. But you can't expect them to speak any language other than Korean. Second easiest way is being introduced thru a friend. And the easiest way to make friends outside of work is by going to language meet ups imo.

This is not SE Asia though. The women won't be flocking for a VISA in most cases.

How hard is it to learn Korean from scratch and where should I try to learn it? What kind of money do you need to earn monthly to be able to live good and have spare money left in Seoul?

Does Korean women even understand if you tell them you are playing poker for living and you don't have real job even if I make better money than average Koreans? How willing are they normally to travel if they have dated you for months or do they like to stay in Korea?

I have been really interested in Korea for last few years and now I would be able to move and earn enough money just by playing poker but I'm not really sure if I like the weather because it's pretty cold when it's winter just like in my country.

In two months, two hours a day studying, if you're good at languages (you're euro so i assume you are) you should be emergency conversational. four more months after that you should be able to hold basic conversations and understand most. I have a friend who was damn close to fluent in a year. But he had a tutor twice a week and was just fearless talking to people every day. The place that helped me learn korean easiest was at talktomeinkorean starting at level 1 lesson 1 and moving thru the podcasts. Then just talking to everyone. I still don't think I'm any good (which frankly is a little bit pathetic) but I can communicate to get what I want and need and I understand a lot of the conversations around me just by picking out vocab.

Lots of teachers seem to get by on 2,500ish USD a month but they have free apartments. 3k a month definitely doable if you know what you're doing and don't need to live in a posh area/alone.

I can't say anything about poker lifestyle. Women are women. The ones who are looking for some stability will care. The ones who aren't probably won't. Korean women like to pick up dinner checks! It's pretty amazing actually. I've probably gone 60/40 all time with my current gf.

We've had a super mild January/February. December was a right pain in the ass but then it seems like winter just didn't hurt as much this year after that. Frankly, winter is better than summer in Seoul imo. Except for the heated seats on the subway. Swass recipe for sure.

Could there be a place in Seoul I could play 8/9-ball for monies? Underground type thing or something? I've been to a few parlors but they seem to only play 4-ball and nonsense like that.

based on the previous two years, it looks like the appt field is ~250.

speaking of which, if anyone would like to purchase a 4-night stay at the W from me, let me know. I won it as part of the Stars satellite but won't be needing it since I live in Seoul.

US Ambassador Mark Lippert was attacked yesterday in Seoul.

The US ambassador to South Korea, Mark Lippert, was slashed on his face and arm by a blade-wielding assailant shouting anti-war slogans in an attack in Seoul Thursday, police and television reports said.

Hello, it's my first post here. I have Skrill (8,200,000 KRW)

I live in Mapo area. I go to Gangnam often though. Since i'm new, best to meet at the coffee shop for transfer?

Deposit/withdraw is very bad in korea. (Need to pay ~7% extra)

It will help out both parties for transfers.

Let me know if you(or anyone) are interested.

A friend (local Korean, non dual-citizenship, who currently only plays freerolls on Pokerstars real$ client) asked me if its possible for him to play cash on stars by only using p2p PS$ transfers. He doesn't want his Korean Bank accounts to have anything to do with online gambling and would rather just pay for PS$ in person and if he wants a cashout to just sell his PS$ in person also.

Does anyone know if this is possible to do?

Yeah it's definitely possible. There is also a Korean service I heard of that will instantly wire money to your Korean bank account for stars (you pay a fee for the service). I've never use it since I just use Skrill.

I'm planning on coming to Seoul for the APPT in April.

Any tips on where to stay? I think the casino is a bit outside the heart of the city from what I read and the recommended W hotel by the APPT came out to like $300/night which adds up if I stay a week or more.

Also what would be best way to buy in or get my USD changed? I see people here are asking for some PS transfers in exchange for cash. Would need about 10-15K USD worth of KRW. Can the casino help me out with this or will it be a total ripoff?

I'll skim through the thread a bit for info but any other tips for a first time visitor would be appreciated. I'm rolling solo before meeting friends in Tokyo so down to go out or get drinks with anyone else that will be there during the APPT.

Thanks

As far as I know, you can buy in via Pokerstars client at Walker hill if that's what you need the KRW for

I got a new computer and just wanted to pass this along...

Just FYI for anyone trying to access the pokerstars webpage to download the PS client without using a VPN:

If you go to www.pokerstars.com you get the police warning page blocking the site.
But, if you go to https://www.pokerstars.com/poker/download/ it comes up and the download works fine.

Time for my crying story lol: Last years STEP 3 there were 55 players, top 5 got a ME ticket, 6 thru 10th got 300k KW. 11 left I'm on Table 2 six -handed and get it allin with AA. Table chip leader calls with KK. Of course K comes out OTF and holds.

Thanks.
