Awesome thread. You write well. You should start a blog or something.

I'll be in Seoul for about a week from Friday. Any recommendations on what I should try to do while I'm there? I know you don't advocate playing poker at the casinos, but it's been a very long time since I've played any poker (especially live) and enjoy small stakes (have a small roll of about 2k to play with) , so I'll be making the trek to Walker Hill probably daily... otherwise, I'm looking to do some cultural stuff, see sights, etc. Any must-sees or must-dos you advocate? I'm not much of a partier or drinker and will be there by myself.

Also, I've heard rumor of the underground games. Have you played in them? Should I just stay away from them as a clueless white dude who doesn't speak a word of Korean?

If you only have a week I strongly urge against playing poker. Get out and see things. Walk up the hill to namsan tower and then walk down and have lunch at one of the restaurants in Itaewon. Spend one night in each Kangnam, Hongdae, and Insadong. Get some people together and go karaoke at a noraebang. Have a date with a girl and take the subway to her local area and have her show you around. I don't know how much you travel but live poker is kind of a comfort zone for people around here and if you don't push your boundaries you're just not going to get as much out of it imo.

If the beach is your thing you can take the KTX to busan and stay a night or two there and hang out at haeundae beach. Also there are tons of temple visits around the country. Would be a shame to miss the DMZ tour as well. So much to do.

Hi guys, just arrived today to Seoul from China for 3 days. I am staying around Itaewon, if any guys want to hang out tomorrow let me know! (it's already a bit late today)

I will try out Itaewon and later Hongik tonight! And I want to go up to the tower tomorrow if its not so foggy as today.. the war memorial is pretty awesome!

Not trying to dissuade any foreigners from visiting Korea but this is a must read for anyone who will be there for a while:

TLDR:
-14 year old American boy is killed in a sauna. The Korean government and American government refused to help the mother, and the case is swept under the rug.
-The AES (Anti-English Spectrum - Korean KKK) is real.

Bad stuff happens everywhere. Korea is about as safe and secure as any place. At 4 am in Seoul, I can walk down the streets and feel secure. I can't say the same for NYC or even Las Vegas (where I've been robbed).

A sad story indeed. But never once in my few years there did I feel unsafe in any city in Korea. In fact, I'm pretty sure if someone on the street randomly accosted me the general public would have been quick to come to my aid. And unless I was in a podunk like Kimje on a tour I don't think I was ever alone no matter how late I was out. Even in the "smaller" cities like Jeonju and Kwangju (both of which I loved btw.)

I play at WH a lot...I actually met a guy there who recognized me from Pokerstars. I also played with Rekrul last week...interesting guy.

If anyone wants to grind (or get really hammered in Gangnam/Hongdae/Itaewon) sometime hit me up. I live in Jamsil.

Daegu is pretty notorious for racism from what I have been told. It's probably the equivalent of going to Bumble****, Alabama. It can be easily avoided since most people are interested in Seoul anyway.

Trying not to sound like a dumbass here as I still haven't been. I guess what I meant is, I would think this sort of incident is not as likely to happen in Seoul due to the fact that they have more exposure to foreigners.

Will be going this summer so I see for myself and give my opinion then.

Sorry for sounding like an ass. I actually meant to say that in a funny way. Koreans can be accepting and they are certainly nice. But I know from experience (as a Korean American) that Koreans are very closed minded in so many ways.

When are you going? I will be there in August and September. You will have an amazing time. imo it's a better party city than NYC, Amsterdam, and Barcelona.

It's cool, I certainly do get that there are 2 sides to every coin. I know that Korea isn't the type of place that I'm going to be marching around expecting the locals to bow at my feet(although I have heard of idiots who do this).

I'm actually trying to work in Seoul for a few years, I work in music and as anyone who lives in the US knows, the industry isn't exactly flourishing. Korean music biz looks pretty sweet, seems do be doing really well. So this summer probably in June-July I'm going to go and see Seoul, try to get an interview or two and see if it's a place I would want to be at for a while.

The nightlife looks SICK! I have been clubbing all over the world and the scene definitely is one of the reasons I want to go. For the record, I think NYC clubs are overrated. I love NY, lived there for many years but it has nothing on Miami or Italian nightlife.

If any of you are going to be around this summer PM me your AIM or skype sn.

Nice. Good luck man.

Yeah I've never been to Italy or Miami. NYC is pretty solid. In terms of just clubs, I'd say Seoul is alright. The top clubs are mostly techno and it's nothing like the glamour of a Vegas XS or TAO. However, the nightlife as a whole is really sick and there are just so many options for so many different things.

I'm moving to Seoul later this month and thought I'd say what's up to this thread. Been reading it for a while (way before I thought I'd ever be living in Korea) and this city sounds awesome.

I'll be living/working in the Apgujeong area for the next 2 years. I have a few contacts but I'm definitely looking for cool ppl to chill/drink/exercise (bball and lifting) so PM me if you're around. I'm 22 but will be 23 in a few weeks.

Also, would anyone be down to go to World DJ Fest on the May 6-8 weekend? I know techno doesn't get the most love around here but it looks pretty sick. Outdoor music events ftw. Probably for one day. PM me if you'd wanna go and we can chat on aim or w/e.

peace guys. or ANNYANGHEKASAYO as my podcast Korean lessons tell me
