Re: Ask me about Rio de Janeiro - Brazil

I understand that in June temperatures are in the 70's, how cold is the water in the ocean? I want to learn to surf but am a warm water kind of guy. Also do you know of a good place to find a short term (something like two weeks) apartment rental?

Re: Ask me about Rio de Janeiro - Brazil

So you're saying the water is fairly cold? Not a huge problem, I'll dress accordingly.

Can you recommend a site to find a short term apartment rental? It seems that there are a lot of choices out there but I am unsure what is considered a good price. I'm looking for a 1 or 2 bedroom unit in Ipanema or Leblon for two weeks.

Re: Ask me about Rio de Janeiro - Brazil

Hi nice thread start, I have a couple of questions

1) How would you compare SP to RIO in the safety aspects?

2) What areas in SP do you consider 'safe' to wander around in as a visitor (very basic Portuguese, some street smarts)?

3) What would you recommend doing in SP except the obvious tourist attractions?

Might come back for more questions! Thanks

The Favellas are more or less under control. From what I understood, the only time there is violence is when the police raid them, they do this a few times a year and it's all part of a number's game to show how they've reduced crime (if you've seen The Wire you'll be able to relate). Though I was told not to, I had no problem walking into a Favella.

Here is a famous quote that you can see around Lapa

"Living in a favela is an ART. Nobody robs. Nobody hears. Nothing is lost.
Those who are wise obey those who give the orders."

Re: Ask me about Rio de Janeiro - Brazil

Hi there everyone!

I feel so thrilled about finding this thread. I'm 25 years old student from Finland and just got news that I was approved to Rio for an exchange program for 10 months. My plan is to first take an intensive portuguese course before actual classes begin in august. This course is offered by my school there (PUC RIO) and it starts in the beginning of july. So, about 4 months before the take off.

A year ago me and my friend travelled 2 months along the north coast of Brazil, mainly in Natal but we spent also time in Recife and Porto de Galinhas. So the culture is to some extent familiar, though i've heard that south is still very different from the north. Had the time of my life back then.

But so now Rio. The university is propably gonna try to settle me in to family housing, but the only way for me is to find a flat of my own, or at least a room from a shared appartment. Ipanema seems to be pretty close to my university and more importantly the beach and the centre. How much do i have to pay for, let's say, a room from a shared appartment in Ipanema? And what's the weather like there in July?

Oh, as this is a poker site I should assumingly tell somethin' about my own game. I play mostly he mtt:s when I have time, but when I don't, it's mainly he heads up sng & plo 100. Been a winning player for the past 4 years. It seems that there are few poker clubs in rio, but any plo going on?

Let's keep it short in this first post, don't want to bother u guys with too many questions.

1. in sao paulo you spend more time inside your car... but u get mugged when u stop on the red light... in rio is more probable u lose your cell phone or few bucks if u go to a dangerous place

2. i already lived in sao paulo... and i lived in Jardins area, wich i think its the best.. best restaurants and best stores... very clean, safe, rich people..

3. music street, antiquity stores.... sp pretty much has everything.. really everything... but beach...

Ok thanks for the info. Still, homestay won't be an option for me. For first week plan is most likely to stay in a cheap hostel and during that time find a furnished room somewhere.

But considering i'll be studying in puc, what areas u recommend to live in?

anyway.. the best place to stay is ipanema and leblon... puc is in Gavea... its a very nice place to live too... but u will not be inside the beach, like ipanema and leblon

Re: Ask me about Rio de Janeiro - Brazil

I won't be able to get time off from work til September. My brothers wedding is also in September and my friend who was going with me to Rio has to go back to school then as well. I may be able to go later in the year but most likely it will be sometime next year.

Re: Ask me about Rio de Janeiro - Brazil

I've heard that Brazil is where to find some of the curviest women... Kim kardashian types.. is this true at all? I'm a huge fan of thick hips and big booties... how prominent is it in Brazil? Please be completely honest and objective because people have a tendency to see maybe 2 big booties at a beach in 1 city 1 time and then come back home and tell all their friends the women had great booties...objectively speaking, how common is it? 1/50 women? 1/100? 1/20? If you go out to a club/beach how many women will have a really curvy or big one? Example:

Re: Ask me about Rio de Janeiro - Brazil

Rio has the widest diversity of women you could ever imagine, and better looking than anywhere else I've ever been. You will find plenty of curvy girls, lots of thin ones, and others with the craziest ethnic blends you've ever heard of. If you're just looking to see some big asses, it won't be hard in Rio.

Hi SFB,

i think the best place to play is in Sinuca Catete (Catete Street, 182 - catete neighborhood), its like 1 min waking from Subway Catete Station...

cash games: 1/2 (reais), running normally from 19 hours.. and friday from 21 hours...

tournaments: everyday at night... schedule in their website: http://www.sinucacatete.com.br/index.html

sit n go: i never saw.. i believe that dont exist...

email and telephone r in website too !
