Bump.

Cool thread. Not sure if anyone can answer but I am wondering How difficult would it be for a poker player who has been unemployed (play poker though for living I guess since it pays the bills) for a couple years + not in school to get a travel visa to Brazil from Canada? The plan is to play a BSOP event while there and also explore Sao Paulo and Rio.

im affraid (cant confirm 100%, tho) that its very very easy to get a 90 days tourist visa from canada to brazil.. and you can renew for another 90 days in the federal police by paying a small fee

I'm dying to go to Rio for a month school vacation from Dec 15 - Jan 14th. Is there a place I can rent for 1 month besides a hostel? I'm trying to save money and I know hostels are cheap but do they have anything for travelers on a budget? I know Rio is expensive but I would like to keep the costs down. I want to learn Portugese and get to see the world's most diverse/beautiful ladies. I'm Korean so I'm wondering if I will stick out? I know Brazil has the biggest Japanese population outside of Japan which is still relatively small. I'm pretty good looking, in great shape, and I have a great personality but the latter won't do much if you can't speak the damn language. US women have a negative stigma about asians for the most part, would it be the same in Brazil?

I tend to attract asian, mexican, filipino types mainly.

I am looking for poker players willing to share an apartment in Rio.
My name is Paulo. I was born in Brasil but I was raised and lived all my life in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.

I am in the northeast of Brasil now. In december I will go to live Rio de Janeiro.

I play online poker full time and am looking for other players to share an appartement in a good neighbourhood.

Hi Guys,

Really cool thread!

Me and my girlfriend will be travelling to Rio for a few days from the 8th - 11th of september then moving on to Sao paolo after that, as we are currently travelling the world.

Taking a private room in rio seems crazy expensive, nearly on par with NY(where we are just now)

I was wondering if there are any nice people from Rio who would be able to put us up for a few days we could either give some cash or buy food/wine/beer for the few days!

I know i don't have many posts here, but i do have onver 1500 posts on blonde poker (a uk poker forum) and well know and trustworkthy in that community. Im curently grinding 6max turb sng's and mtt's, so would be fun to meet other grinders whilst travelling

Even if you cant host and and would like to meet for a beer or something get it touch

Grant

Yes, you can cashout to Neteller after that cashout to all the best known banks.

No, all brazilian players never payed tax before in brazil, but if u cashout something like $50k+ to your account is there a possibility that they ask from where came your money. If u want to know better about taxation, try to translate and read this link http://www.bsop.com.br/bsop/Pagina.do?idSecao=92 that explains how its tax the live tournaments payouts.

Yes, but doesnt exist any gambling site locates in brazil, there isnt any problem in play at pokerstars for example.

Cash-game live are illegal in brazil, but tournaments arent lol, but I never heard of any club of poker that was forced to close. In some states like Rio de Janeiro and Parana I heard some cases that two or three times they stopped a tournament and cash games, but the players just has to go back to home.

What's the nicest place to live in Brazil?

By nice I mean clean-ish air, stable internet, and plenty of good food.

Good thread 40s lots of useful info.

I want to come over next year for a few months around the time of the World Cup but wondering what is the best way to go about things.

So if I was to come to Rio in lets say March and rent a place in either Leblon and Ipanema for 6 months at around $1k a month do you think that would be possible ?

How easy is it to find an apartment if you don't speak any Portuguese ? I will start learning before I arrive but I doubt I would be able to hold a conversation for a while.

Also interested to hear more about why you think its a bad idea to be in the country for the World Cup.

6 months would be short term.. so i think it may be very very difficult to get a place for 1kusd a month in ipanema or leblon.. but it worth to try.. you also never know how the usd will fluctuate in relation to brl, so it may get better for you..
i think its possible to get an apartment if you dont speak any portuguese.. just sent as much emails as you can and research a lot to make sure you are not getting trapped.

i think it may be really cool to go during the world cup... i just think it may be disappointing in some ways... like to get tickets to the games.. also the infra-structure is still very bad in rio.
tho, it is much more special to visit the city during the world cup compared to when there is nothing going on ofc

let me know if i can help with anything else

Finding anything decent in Ipanema & Leblon for 1k/month is as likely as winning the lottery. Don't fool yourself.

For 1k you probably get somth with 30min walk to beach in Copa area (if you are lucky!). The main reason locals can afford to live there is because they own the hourse for generations and many people live together.

If you're up for adventures, you could try to live in Vidigal. Not my type of thing, but its an original idea those favela hostels.

On Christmas, NYE and Carneval people rent out ****, literally **** **** places for $300 a night. NYE in rio and midnight on copa is worth any price though.

My advice (thats how i did it):

- airbnb to feel out prices for your level of luxury
- check out agencies. They take a 20-30% cut, but often deliver better quality than airbnb (usually airbnb is good, not in rio though) despite the fees
- make a longterm deal with the owner (get rid of agency) so that NYE and Carneval is included. Thats how my first 3 months looked like
- Get to know somebody local and people that are well connected will find you something rly good. (got lucky there for a couple of months)
- make sure you have GOOD aircon until the end of april. You will thank me for it
- do it now

Thanks very much 40s and ThinkItThrough for your replies they are much appreciated.

I am in no way set on Leblon/Ipanema or even Rio for that matter. All I really have so far is a general plan to go spend 3-6 months next year in Brazil. Have been living in Canada since January but will leave in a couple months for home when I will plan my next move.

The more I hear about Rio it seems that like 40s has already mentioned, the cost of living there makes it maybe not the ideal destination.

Would be great If you could tell me your thoughts on this, which out of the Brazil World Cup host cities would you prefer to spend 3-6 months living in ?

I know that's probably a difficult question to answer but any advice anyone may have would be great, thanks.

Here are the host cities for anyone who may be interested.

I hear that the South is safer to live in than the North but really I know very little about any of those cities apart from maybe some of the football teams. Like I say it very early in my planning for this trip so very keen to hear any ideas.
