Ask me about Rio de Janeiro - Brazil

Hi, i born and live in Rio de Janeiro(around 6mi habitants), and also spent few years living in Sao Paulo and other cities.

There are no casino in Brazil, but there are clubs where u can play nl holdem cash games from 1/2 to 5/10 and i believe 10/20 (Currency: Real). In this clubs u will also find tournaments, and 3 times a year bigs tournament on Hotels (Two Brazilian Series of Poker -BSOP- and one Latin America Poker Tour-LAPT-)

The minimum income here is around 500 Reais (1 USD around 1,9 - 2,0 Reais).

The cost os living is expensive compared to south america.. and here are two sites where u can have an idea of cost of living:

The best places to live are: Ipanema and Leblon; no matter where you live in these neighborhoods, u r not more then 5min walking from the beach, or anything that you may need on day-by-day.

Its never cold (even during the winter)

Curiosities: Rio de Janeiro...

+ will host 2014 World Cup
+ will host 2016 Olympic Games
+ is known as Wonderfull city
+ is considered the most happy city in the world (according to forbes)
+ has one of the seven modern wonders (Christ Redeemer)
+ has the biggest party in the world (carnaval)

Anything else, just ask. And sorry about my english.

Re: Ask me about Rio de Janeiro - Brazil

Hi there!

I have some questions for you thanks!

What is the highest NL holdem cash game I can can find on a daily basis in Brazil and in Rio? What is the qality of the players and rake?

Is the ocean outside Rio very much polluted? Is people avoiding to swim in it?

How much for a 1 bed room apartment in a nice area that would suit a Swedish couple with a 3 year old son?

How reliable and fast is internet there? How easy it is to get internet for a foreigner that is not working in Brazil?

What other country in the world would you compare the cost of living in Rio (Brazil) with?

Tell me some of the reasons you would recomend a guy to move to Rio, and some of the reasons you would recommend a guy not to move to Rio.

Thanks!

- 5/10 is easy to find, but i believe there is 10/20
- Is totally ok to swin.
- a 1 bedroom apartament in Ipanema is around 1000 reais/month.
- if u rent an apartament, u can negociate with the owner the internet, normally 2gb, around 100 reais. If he dont want to put internet for you, u need to buy a 3G modem
- i never lived outside brazil. but to try to compare, 1kg of chicken in the market is 10 reais, and 1kg of file mignon around 25. And the restaurants is up too u... u may eat pizza as much as u want for 14 reais... or go to a fancy restaurant and pay 500.

The city is huge.. If u come, u would probably live in the best area (Ipanema, Leblon and nearest), that is not dangerous.

During the summer, we always heard about foreigner being mugged... even is this neighborhoods that i mentioned. I consider that here u can live normally without fear.. and i have a lot of foreigner friends that live like this too.

About the girls, there are easy.. hard.. fat..thin.. absolutly every type of girl. When u go to the beach u see girls so perfect that u never imagine that could exist, wearing a mini bikini, and next to her a fat old woman.

Re: Ask me about Rio de Janeiro - Brazil

Thans for the answers 40s I appreciate it.

Since being able to play live poker is very important for me if going to Rio I just want to ask you to explain a little bit more about the live poker scene.

You say that I can easily find a 5/10 Real game. Are there several pokerclubs or just one that offer this stakes? How many tables of this stake would you estimate I could find on a daily basis in Rio? What is the quality of the players, depth of the stacks, and is the rake beatable?

If this game is running everyday, then a very good live poker player should be able to make a living by playing live poker there, right?

I easily supported my family by playing a 2/5 us dollars game while living in Aruba (which I believe is a little bit more expensive than Rio) and it should therefore not be any more difficult in Rio then, right?

Sorry dude, i really didnt answear everything..

-There are several poker clubs, but few has only 1/2 deep. You find 2 tables running all night - very important: im not 100% sure, but i think is runs ONLY at night (from 8 to around 6..7). The players r week and the rake is 5% uncapped. It runs everyday, the whole year.

-I dont know how good u r, but if u r 2/4 usd regular, i assume that u can easily making a living here playing only live(not a king life)

Not that is matters, but I just remembered that the Aruba game was a 5/5 us dollars game, not 2/5.

Re: Ask me about Rio de Janeiro - Brazil

tell me about carnaval. im thinking about coming down for it next year.

also, my spanish proficiency is quite good as i have taken it for a long time and i will be spending a lot of time in spain this summer. how hard would it be for me to get around considering that the native language is portuguese? i guess i am assuming they are kind of close but of course this is brazillian portuguese and not portugal portuguese. or at least learn enough to be able to be ok.

Re: Ask me about Rio de Janeiro - Brazil

How important would you say it is to know Portugese? I mean could you get by only knowing English and learning some Portugese on the way while there?

Tips on websites for renting apartments thats catering towards foreigners?

And about the livepoker, the pokerclubs, are they legal? And are they "open for everyone"? or do you need to know people to play in those clubs etc?

Carnaval is the biggest party of earth.. officialy its from saturday to wednesday, but the party in the street starts one week before and it send sunday after the mentioned wednesday.
The party in the street goes all the day on every place of the city... 24h/day, so u will always have a place to party.. Everybody is drinking and its, by far, the best season the get girls
During the carnaval, the rent gets around 4x expensive (the price u would pay for a month, u pay just for a week).
The weather during the carnaval couldnt be better... sunny all the month and beach everyday, but the beach gets full too.

edit: about the language, its close to spanish, and if u speak spanish slowly everybody will understand, and the words that r different, r easy to learn. The funny part is even if u talk spanish with a guy selling water in the middle if carnaval, he will try to talk to you in spanish too.

- Yes. Just make sure that u know how to say "please; thank you" and these kind of thigs, because if u go to a not fancy please in the street for a snack, im sure they dont understand english.

- Do u plan to rent an apartament for a family, just you, only a room ? there is this website to share apartaments and/or rent a room: www.easyquarto.com.br , but i think there are better choices.. ill search later

- The law here is not clear about cash games, because there is not something specific. They run normally everyday and they are open for anyone, u just need to know where it is, because there is no big sign on the door write " poker clube" or something like this.

Re: Ask me about Rio de Janeiro - Brazil

as far as questions so far

my apartment came standard with internet, it was very reliable, better than i have here in the states

knowing portugese is very important. other than studying it in school i suggest anyone going to brazil pick up the Pimsleur learning series. i listened to it everyday while playing poker there. pick up a dictionary or a pocket translator, this is what i did and found it to very successful: if you know you're going somewhere for the day, like the supermarket, mall, club look up vocab words that you think youll use and memorize them

if you dont know something, but people see you are making an effort, they are genuinely the nicest and most receptive people in the entire world. when i was there my first week i spilled beer on my roommates laptop keyboard, i went to try to find a can of air. i got all the words i needed to ask around, but my no one really understood me. i went to the supermarket and asked around and the lady there had no clue, then she asked a customer, then the customer asked another customer, that customer called their nephew for me who spoke english so i could explain to him what i needed. 5 people went out of their way to help me, it was pretty awesome, and things like this happened regularly

living costs were pretty high, but i was in a very nice area. prices varied. you can live a very nice life in rio very cheap.

girls are as bountiful and easy as the rumors suggest

i never played any live poker there, but i hate live poker

i was never concerned for my safety for a single minute. london felt shadier than downtown rio tbh. i stayed mostly in zona sul though, went to every other district except the very west

Rio is amazing and everyone should give it a try. if you have any questions from a tourist perspective let me know and ill try to help 40s out

Re: Ask me about Rio de Janeiro - Brazil

hey 40s,

I'm trying to plan a trip to Rio Brazil with some friends and was trying to get an idea of how much the trip would cost each person and some different price range based on staying in budget/average/nice hotels in Rio and how much plane tickets would cost. Can you give me some links or ball park information or help in planning the trip? Just would need a few diff price ranges for types of hotels and airfare.

hey boobies!!

when u come ? how nice needs to be the hotel ? 5 star ?

this r a good hotels is a good location(ipanema): http://www.ipanemaplaza.com.br/ and http://www.caesarpark-rio.com/

or others in a good location too(leblon): http://www.hotelmarina.com.br/palace/ and the Hilton(in other style-executive)..and i didnt find the website of hilton.

here u can check how much it will cost your plane ticket: www.decolar.com

u can eat in a good place for 30 reais, or 40 reais and eat as much as you want.. or 14 reais and eat pizza as much as you want.. or 500 reais and eat like a prince... everything no more than 5 minutes walking from any of these 2 hotels

so its pretty much like this.. u can get anything.. for any price.. without going far..

anything else ask me

cya

im not asking about straight currency conversions. im asking about if there are items that are more expensive due to whatever; customs, lack of supply. or things that are cheap because brazil produces a lot of it. thanks a lot for your answer though. really helpful.
