how is the night life? is it nice and clam, safe, or a bit hectkit, fights etc etc?

are there still untouched parts of RIO, i.e the real brazil, were tourists dont go, is that bit safe?
prostitution is not legal.. and who know if the girls are clean ? we hope yes.

but seriously.. Rio is a huge city.. with 7 million habitants..
for almost all those questions the answear is "yes and no".. there are good hostels and bad hostels.. etc..
and there are few parts untouched..

WTF???

Prostitution IS COMPLETELY legal in Brazil, for the whores and for the customers. Just the owners of the houses can have problems sometimes! I think I don't have to say that it is NOT legal have sex with under-18 prostitutes.

And if the girls are clean or not, it depends on how much you are paying. Cheap and poor whores usually aren't.

Don't know about hostels, but probably they are not good nor clean enough. Good news is that there are some very acceptable hotels with good prices.

Crime rates depends on where are you going to stay. Rio, São Paulo, Salvador, Recife and Fortaleza are dangerous. The south is not that dangerous, but you must be carefull in the big cities (Florianópolis, Porto Alegre, Joinville, Pelotas, Caxias do Sul, etc). In southern interior, crime rates are similar to europe.

with 1-2K dollars you can spend 2 good weeks around here.

night life is VERY good in almost all Brazil. There are some fights sometimes, but if you don't look for troubles, troubles won't look for you. But if you are one of those guys who looks for problems, who use drugs, who try to pick up other guys' girlfriends, etc., troubles might find you.

In Rio, those untouched spots are dangerous for tourists. Today I saw a report of some tourists who went to a poor neighborhood to buy drugs and the CAB DRIVER called the cops (corrupt cops) to exploit them (they wanted 5K dollars to not arrest them). But the tourists did the right thing: denounce to police and the cops got arrested. lol.

As you see, Brazil is not a perfect country, but it is quite civilizate. If you take some care, you will sure have some good time around here.

Hi, I imagine answer to this has been posted before so if its annoying to asnwer lemme know, I'll go thru the thread again. What kind of place can I get if my budget for rent and fixed expenses (electricity/water/interent/tv/maid) is 1500$. I plan to come for 2 or 3 months starting september 1st. I want a 1bedroom palce in the best area possible which seems to be Ipanema or Copacabana.

Also do u know a good site for looking at places? I cant find any site that really has a lot to show

Thx a lot

hostels are the best places to stay by far, especially if you don't speak any portuguese, you meet young nice people with similar interests and you do things together, I have plenty to rent places but much prefer hostels

ON THE RE-ENTries - IT IS UNLIMITED up until the date on the visa, I came in and out 3 times over a 6 week period.

Hi,

New to the forum, but have been reading this thread for the past few weeks and figured i may as well ask a few questions myself!

The Latin American Poker Tour - my bankroll does not stretch to the $2300 main eveny buyin, but am looking to maybe play Peru in April and Argentina in June...do the casino's run satellites to these events in the days preceding the event? I know there are sat's on 'stars but would like the option of lives ones as well.

I am taking my laptop with me to grind the MTT's whilst i'm away, i fly into Rio and then plan to 'do the rounds' in South America - are the chances of getting it robbed high? I am a security conscious person and obviously won't put myself in a position to become a target, but any advice/thoughts on this would be gratefully recieved.

Also, from a non-poker perspective, i am looking for some advice on what route to take around on my travels. Obviously i only want a vague idea of what people would recommend, but if i fly into Rio and have 4 months wanting to see as much of the continent as possible, how would people go about it? Would you go North from Rio and do alot of Brasil that way? Or head South towards Uruguay and go North from there etc etc?

Any other advice from people about amazing places/things to do etc anywhere in South America would also be much appreciated.

Sorry for the long post and lots of questions!

Look forward to replies,

Thanks

When is it wet/dry/hot/cold/boring? I don't think I remember seeing anything regarding the seasonality of things in rio. I'd hate to visit and be stuck with 3 weeks of rain or something else that would make a trip less than ideal. Generally speaking best/worst times to plan a holiday.

December or january is the best time to go imo. Or in february/march if you want to attend carneval.

I've been here a little over a month and I'd say 80% of days have been rainy/cloudy. When the sun is out the beach is spectacular and has some amazing people watching though.

Poker isn't big at all over here. I don't think there are any casinos, but if they do build one I think there'll be some mega donks to due to the amount of ultra rich people who have no clue about the game.

From what I've been reading Brazil doesn't give airport visa's and you have to apply ahead. I would imagine theres not trouble in obtaining these? How long does it take to get a visa? If I turned up with a 1 way plane ticket is that going to be an issue getting through customs?
