I lived in rio for close to a year. I have lived alot of places from asia/north america/south america/europe and its by far the most dangerous city I have lived. Every single one of my friends has a story of getting robbed in one way or another from house evasion, car jacking, to just straight jackings. If you visit for a short time you "might" not see this. But you have to remember that the city of rio is surrounded by an astronomical number of favelas. Dont wear nike shoes, watches, or sunglasses in brazil. These are all very expensive items which dirt bags target. For example a pair of nike shoes in rio is about $250-400 american dollars. Nice Sunglasses cost $1000+ for a pair that would be $300 in the states. Like my friend said "its not if you get robbed, its when". I personally watched my friend get robbed in broad day light in copa who was 20 feet away from me on the main strip. This is a city where there is 15 murders a day so be careful is my advice

but how many of those 15 murders/day happen to tourists? like 1?

i'm definitely biased because i had relatively high expectations of getting robbed/killed going in and then after a day or two i felt (ignorantly) safe and witnessed anything scary (copa at night seemed pretty sketchy though). i was only there all of 3 weeks.

I was kindve the same way. I fancied running alot at night along the beach (mainly in ipanema)...never really took anything with me, but I did have my ipod...couldve had that stolen I guess.

the thing about Rio is the prevalence of the favelas. I stayed at the Sheraton in Leblon for a week, and you are literally surrounded by favela except for the beach. We also stayed for a week in Barra and it was completely different: much more US middle class.

I personally felt safe in Rio, but I stayed in populated areas during the day and only spoke Spanish when spoken to.

interestingly, i felt safer in alot of neighborhoods in Sao Paolo and made alot more Brazilian friends.

alright thanks for the advice. hostels are fun sometimes but apartments so much more comfortable...

what can i expect to pay for a 70m² apartment per night ? (if you know prices only in reals thats fine)

i can tell u the rent for long term(not including the bills and taxes)..
it should be around 2k and 3k reais
1 usd = 1.8 reais

it depends a LOT of the location.. even if leblon and ipanema are small neighborhoods

agreed; what aspects? i've only spent 2 weeks in rio to go with my 2+ years in BsAs, but they are pretty different. The beach is obviously the biggest one: if you really want a beach, choose Rio. But if you're even asking the question, it means that a beach probably isn't that important to you, so...don't know.

if you care about price and earn dollars, then BsAs is easily a better bargain.

just got into Rio late last night (thanks to a 10 hr delay). Kind of cloudy out though right now so any recommendations other than the beach, sugar loaf and christ statue would be awesome.

Oh thanks for the info guys. Might actually check out the soccer game on Wed. It's really only like 20-30 reais?

And where do I go about buying tickets? (If there are options other than at the stadium)

Some friends and I were gonna get a house/villa for a month or two in florianopolis/buzios/trancosco sometime in nov/dec. We wanted somewhere a little smaller with a nice beach and still a good party scene. How are these places for partying/girls/how safe? Would we be better off in RIO? Do you know if they have card clubs too?

thanks for any info
