First impression of the city is pretty good. Taxi from the airport to Jardins was 150. Jardins is a pretty nice section of the town, I would recommend especially for people who are not on a shoe string budget. Even though it is more upscale and touristy, it is still quite affordable for anyone used to N.A. prices. I'm staying at a Hilton by Doubletree for 180 reals (33.68 usd). Pretax but tax is only 5% anyway, so let's call it 35. The room isn't quite what you would expect from this brand in North America but still quite comfortable, I have a flat screen, decent internet, comfortable bed. The outlet is 110 V which is a *****, but I'm sure I can find an adapter.

My first night I spent in a Quality Suites longstay hotel. I got soaked on the price, paying 330 reals. Not a lot of money but the room was avail online because of black friday sale for 130. My first tip for you is to always have a reservation. I know this is kind of basic for people used to travelling in North America, but mostly in Latin America I found it wasn't really necessary. But at least in the Jardins section of Sao Paulo I think a reservation is next to mandatory. I had to bounce across four or five hotels, and of course the taxi driver doesn't speak English, so I'm communicating in pantomime.

So, the next thing is, as a foreigner you can't buy a SIM card. Actually one store sold me one, but it was for a deactivated line. Way to go Brazil. So you probably need to enlist a Brazilian with a tax number to buy one. Or there might be some foreigner aimed at solutions I'm not aware of. Actually though, it doesn't matter, because I paid some guy $2 on reddit to activate Whatsapp for me, and all the people (read hookers) I want to contact are on Whatsapp anyway. The whole country is on Whatsapp. I actually can't use it on my phone, but I can use Whatsapp for desktop.

Speaking of hookers, prices range anywhere from 50 to 2000 reals depending on the class of girl, time you book, and overall level of service.

Food is great and inexpensive. I had a bacon cheeseburger with fries at a real locals place, along with literally fresh squeezed orange juice for 20 reals. 3.74. There was even an orange slice in the juice. How is that for pulp. I took it without sugar, and it was a very nice drink. The burger was kind of meh, they put like cheese whiz on it or something (along with real cheese). What can you do. I also had a churassco sandwhich at another place, which was amazing and again quite inexpensive. And then today I ordered a plate of churassco at another place, and they gave me probably a pound of beef (it was the entire plate cut into strips with lots of onions), as well as a sort of make your own bruchetta dish (garlic bread with a cup of diced tomatoes on the side). This all, plus two cups of coffee, and an orange / mango / milk juice blend that was amazing. Everything was 50 real (under $10). I don't think tipping is expected either.

So yah, so far Sao Paulo seems great. Relatively inexpensive, lots to do, easy to walk around and go places. No problems with the internet so far.

Good post, waiting for the hooker reports. I never had a problem with 110V when travelling, these days all mobile equipment should work with either

I just arrived to SP last Wednesday and am also staying in Jardins. Uber from airport to here is only 66 BRL my dude.

Agree that a bunch of stuff is a pain in the ass. Finally found a place that would give us a SIM after trying 4 stores. Can’t use the bike share bc it won’t take my passport. WiFi kinda sucks and our phone connection isn’t that strong. Buddy told me that’s normal for Brazil. Was difficult booking a flight to Rio, had to try a dozen sites to find one that didn’t require a Brazilian soc sec #.

SP seems pretty cool so far, but not in love with the place. Jardins is pretty good, but prefer the similar zones in CDMX. Paulista cool, but prefer Reforma in CDMX. Liberdade was kinda lame, my gf is big into Japanese stuff and even she was kinda disappointed. Stuff around Beco do Batman was pretty cool and we’ll hit up Centro soon which I think will be the highlight for me. We were planning to stay another week at the end of our vacay here, but will probably cut that down to 2 days and save time for other places in Brazil.

Agree that food is pretty great. Had a feijoada for 25 BRL and it was delicious and double the food I needed. Couldn’t believe how much meat they give you for that price.

Well I was going to spare you guys the gory details, but since you asked for it. So last night I ordered a girl from photoaccomphants, 300 real. She was 18, super hot, real photos, but just absolutely horrible service. Wouldn't kiss, or give blowjob without a condom. Kind of my fault too cause I couldn't get it it up, but she was really not putting any effort into it. Hey, men need foreplay too *****. So anyway eventually she went on her way. Then I ordered another girl. She was darker, shorter, great body, face was sort of meh not bad or anything. Great service, lots of kissing, incredible blowjob (this girl was on another level). We had a great vibe the entire time, she was very happy to be there and into her work. Still couldn't really do sex to completion but finished in her mouth. My only real complaint was the taste of her mouth, it wasn't too bad at the start but once we were really making out it was a little off putting. She was also dropped off by her boyfriend or pimp.

I was a little concerned about getting hit with a joiner's fee or some chastisement from the hotel, but I guess it was all cool because this went down in the middle of the night. Didn't have to register the girls or anything.

total cost of 300 reals 56.14 usd and 250 reals. But if you are willing to venture out you can get a half hour for 50 reals ($9.36) and really that is all you need. So once I get my phone hooked up I am going to hit up some of these bargain basement deals. Anyway I stocked up on 12 sudenafil for 200 reals so I should be good to go even with the starfishes.

this was the first girl

err, actually I misphrased the issue, which is that it is a type C socket. luckily the hotel had an adapter so it's all good.

My latest friend. 24 years old, absolutely smoking hot, her picture really doesn't do her justice. Braces, lean athletic body. Great bubbly personality, we were laughing the whole time. Lots of french kissing. Absolutely insane head game. Real PSE. 300 reals one hour no taxi fee or anything.

The key is you have to find the girls who have lots of positive reviews on the review forums. Otherwise you just get ripped off. My last two chicks were A++ experiences. The first one even let me bareback her a bit, just the tip tho, cause she doesn't want to have babies. This one might have too we had a great rapport but I didn't want to ruin the experience if she had to say no.

Want to hit up Argentina, looks like they are opening back up and the economy is so ****ed prices are even better over there. God bless inept Latin American leftist politicians for ruining your countries economies so your women have to sell themselves cheap just to eat.

I've got a return flight for some time in Feb. but I'll probably skip it and head to Buenos Aires if they reopen in time.

Had a 19 year old from Brasilia over earlier today. Paid all the way up to 400 reals, which is sort of higher end. Money well spent. 165 cm (5.4) and 50 kg, like borderline anorexic. Super cute. Long braided hair, braces, light bubbly personality. We had great rapport instantly and she even spoke a little bit of English. We spent a long time cuddling and making out. Didn't even bother to have intercourse, just enjoyed some prolonged oral with her constantly looking up into my eyes and grinning wickedly. One thing about young women is it helps if you can talk about things that they are interested in, so I asked her about her favourite artists and she played me some songs from her phone. It's crazy how good technology is, these days you can have a conversation with anyone through google translate. Just point, record and talk.

Then after she left ate lunch at this ultra cute cafe next to my hotel which I'd walked by a million times but never eaten at. Had an Italian sandwhich (was gambling a bit because I can't read the menu) and an espresso. Absolutely amazing. The sandwhich was a brioche bun with chicken breast, bacon, tomato and lettuce as well as this light green sauce. A little messy but absolutely delicious. The owner's business partner and his friend and we had a chat about covid and different responses and the difficult balance policy makers have to strike. It was just nice to actually have a conversation with someone for a change.

Bumping for an update.

Kudos for being among the first wave of people to start traveling again! Besides (presumably) having to wear a mask everywhere and bars & restaurants being at reduced capacity, what are the big negatives with regards to traveling Brazil at this time? I'm sure there are a lot less tourists than usual, so in some ways that's got to be a net positive. Maybe prices are lower than they otherwise would be? I'm guessing airbnb hosts are much more willing to negotiate prices than they otherwise might be...

Are you planning on visiting Florianópolis while you're in Brazil? I've never been myself but have heard nothing but great things about it from others.

TBH, not a whole lot of negatives in Brazil. Obvious one is the slight risk to our health, but my girlfriend and I will quarantine for 14 days when we return to CDMX so as not to put anyone in her family at risk. Other thing is that we’d like to have been doing language exchanges and stuff like that to keep working on Portuguese, but can’t, so we haven’t really improved it at all. We can’t really understand people very well with masks either. Also, certain museums or other places being closed, although most are open.

Yes, we’re wearing masks everywhere, and shields as well on flights, mostly only going to outdoor areas or restaus with distancing. It hasn’t been that much of a reduced experience and there are a few positives as well.

For example, we have a 1br in Ipanema one block from the beach, which is probably the best place to be in Rio, and it’s only $40 a night. The owner said it was going for double last year.

We finished our week in São Paulo and were planning to do another week there at the end of our trip in February, but will cut that to just 2-3 days. It’s a pretty solid city, but slightly disappointing. Brazil has a very weird mentality and it seems like they’re terrible at investing in infrastructure to maximize their cities and optimize the tourism experience.

We’ve been in Rio for 6 days and have loved it and will probably do another 4-8 weeks here, haven’t decided yet. I’m a sucker for big cities on the coast, so knew I’d love Rio, but again feels like it could easily be a slam dunk 10/10 city but is more like an 8.5 or 9 for me. For some reason there isn’t as much development in the touristy areas as you’d expect, there should be awesome outdoor restaurants along the main beaches, and they could highlight the center by cleaning buildings and streets but choose not to. Mexico does all these things way better than Brazil.

Not exactly sure what the game plan is for the rest of the trip. I think Salvador is probably a lock, and I’d like to do Florianopolis but don’t think it’d be that great of an experience. It will be packed in January and the island is super spread out and you basically pick a beach and stay there, but I prefer being able to easily check out a bunch of different areas in a city and walk around. So we might choose another city or 2 in the northeast like Recife or Fortaleza, or possibly something a bit in the interior like Belo Horizonte. We’re also debating swinging over to Chile to check out Santiago, Viña, and Valpo, but that will depend how much is open in Chile. They just recently reopened tourism for internationals.

One final point, regarding safety. So far my girlfriend and I have agreed that Brazil hasn’t felt any more dangerous than other parts of LatAm. Haven’t felt unsafe in either city, but also don’t really go out drinking late at night, and the best nightlife areas seem to be in seedier parts, so that probably mitigates risk a ton. Have walked around the nicer areas in each city (Av Paulista and Jardins in SP, and Leblon and Ipanema in Rio) and felt fine in both.

I moved down here a couple weeks ago and will stay for summer (until march or so). Good spot and seems to have gotten better in lots of ways, and also just as annoying in the same ol brazilian ways, haha. First week was good but surf just went flat this week so have been doing bike rides, hikes, and skating in the meantime. This will be my 3rd summer here, but 1st time back in 4 years. Looking forward to an awesome summer if anyone ends up down this way, gimme a holler!

It can't be much different than Colombia, where cocaine is just a few dollars for a small baggie. It's not like they search anybody at the border. Well technically I've only been to the Ipiales - Tulcan border but I'm assuming they're all like that, just basically rubber stamp and away you go. I've yet to venture into any Favelas to score, but there are plenty of people smoking weed on the street.

ive only done coke here a handful of times, but i wouldnt at allll expect colombian prices or quality. Even in mexico coke is pretty wack for prices at ~$40 a gram (guadalajara, 2nd biggest city and very cheap to live overall) and I would guess ~60% purity on the best of days (not bad at all, but not even close to good hookups in peru/colombia for < $10/gram and 80%+ purity).

weed in brazil is all around too but its compressed bud from paraguay mostly, 100 grams for $50 or decent/good indoor for $20/gram. called prensado

value drugs in brazil you are more likely to find e and lsd. although to be fair im just guessing on coke prices here since I really don't see it around too much which points to it being more upscale.

sorry for the drug rant, but also a warning with lsd in brazil... nbome is a very popular cheaper alternative here and can be ****ing dangerous. i normally wouldn't care if people take 10 hits of acid a night, but nbome is sold as lsd and can be fatal. trust your sources (nbome has a slight bitter taste, spit that **** out)

curious if anyone has first hand knowledge of brazil coke prices still. just my 2 cents above. maybe i don't see it in brazil often since beer/liquor is cheap as hell, so still relatively expensive.

if you go to the beach in copa or ipanema youll get offered it, we were playing football with the people who sell umbrellas and chairs and maybe wasnt putting in the effort , so they offered us a pick me up , was pretty good , 3-0 down at half time, come back to win 10-3 .

I think the rule of thumb is that the further away you get from Colombia / Bolivia / Peru the higher the price is going to be. Any thoughts on where to go in Sao Paulo to purchase marijuana?
